1. No more cocktails at lunch. It's a bad idea and it means you spend the entire rest of the day fighting off sleep. Don't do it.

(And it was fruit-filled sissy cocktail too. I'm even more of a lightweight than I thought.)

2. "A Little Less Conversation" is one of my favorite Elvis songs. I think this probably makes me a bad Elvis fan.

Also, one day I will visit Las Vegas, and then I will be able to write that story about the female Elvis impersonator on a metaphorical Grail quest. All my other old original fiction ideas were too cliched or too run-of-the-mill urban fantasy/fantasyland or too complicated to be workable, but dammit, I am holding on to this one like it's my job.

3. Once I finally start writing with intent again, I should work either on my unfinished WIPs (particularly Memory, as that requires, like, plotting and things) or on that Ben/Polly thing I've been toying with since forever. I should not write stories about talking frogs who quote Bible verses.

(I suppose I could write Ben/Polly fic where they encounter talking frogs.)

3.a. Dad and I finally, after about four hours, managed to update and sync my phone. Unfortunately, in the process, the three documents I had saved on my phone for portability (including that second chapter of Made Up Your Mind and a big ol' chunk of chapter 2 of Experiment) ended up irrevocably lost in the ether, which put me in an ill mood for most of the weekend. I knew I should have transcribed them. I have got to get out of the habit of typing things on my phone.

4. Finally caught the (third?) season finale of Burn Notice. Dammit, I think I might finally be starting to ship Michael/Fiona a little bit. I don't *want* to ship them; I was all proud of myself and stuff for not shipping the people the show told me to. But now I think I might be leaning that direction. Damn.

5. School starts in less than a week why why why. :(

I am not discussing politics right now on account of how I don't want my head to explode.

First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, [personal profile] silly_cleo!!! I hope the coming year is wonderful.

----

You remember that writing meme I did a while earlier, with the fics written in the time it takes for one song to play? As a way of warming up for more serious/extensive writing, I did a few rounds of those on vacation. There are fourteen in total; I figured I'd post them up here.

The rules, in case you needed a reminder:

1. Put your iPod or other mp3 player on Shuffle
2. Pick the first five/seven/ten songs that come up.
3. Write a short fic inspired by each of those songs. You may only write for the duration of the song - if the song lasts three minutes, you only write for three minutes. No cheating!*

*I still cheated. Mostly because I skipped any song where I didn’t know the language, because it was apparently Bollywood Day off in Shuffle-land.

1. "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen/We Three Kings" - The Barenaked Ladies & Sarah McLachlan (3:31)

--

2. "Amazonic" - Maksim (3:20; not uploaded because iTunes is having issues with finding the file)

--

3. "Arcus" - Amethystium (5:06)

--

4. “Never Let Me Down Again” – Tina Root (Depeche Mode cover) (4:25)

--

5. "Club Nowhere" - Blue Man Group (4:50)

--

6. "They" - Jem (3:16)

--

7. “You Keep Me Hanging On” – Kim Wilde (4:15)

--

8. "Tequila Mockingbird" - Vanessa-Mae (3:29)

--

9. "Song 2" - Blur (2:01)

--

10. "Truth Be Known" - Atlas Plug (4:35)

--

11. "Scorchio" - Bond (3:31)

--

12. "Hijo de la Luna" - Sarah Brightman (4:27)

--

13. "To The Pirates' Cave!" - Pirates of the Caribbean Soundtrack (3:30)

--

14. "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" - Bono (from the Across the Universe soundtrack) (4:23)

--

To bed.

- HAPPY BIRTHDAY,

[profile] minerva_fan! Hope you're having a lovely time of it, and that the coming year is good to you.

- Does anyone have a copy of the Beatles' "Hey Jude" they wouldn't mind e-mailing or messaging to me? It's for a good cause (read: fanmix). In related news, MediaFire is still being wierd about that music meme I did; if it's not working by this weekend, I'll upload it somewhere else. Sorry for the delay.

- I LOVE MONK. I haven't watched it in a long time, and there's an episode on now that I've seen at least three times, and it's still brilliant. Best of all, new episodes of it are coming soon! And of Psych! And Burn Notice! And The Closer! Oh, summer fandoms. How you refresh.

Am considering writing a Summer Fandom fic for [profile] unusuallygen, since I haven't written a Law and Order casefile yet and I'd rather try something lighter than a big serious casefile. My summer shows are, on the whole, less serious fare than my fall programs, and so have more room for lighter fic. Since my prompt is for "going undercover as a married couple", I'm thinking Lassiter and Juliet or Disher and Natalie might be good for it.

Yes, it's due in less than thirty days. Of course I haven't started. Silly question.

- Am hitting a bit of a slump as far as Memory is concerned. Even in quick drafts, my prose has become workmanlike and dull. I feel like I'm just describing a plot outline rather than creating something interesting.

Have tried to take a break by working on various small fics for

[community profile] whoniverse1000, which aren't coming to much. The Two/Polly keeps stalling since my voices for both characters are shaky, and the Three/Section Leader Shaw began its life as Yet Another Attempt At Writing Porn (yes, it gets a capitalisation; there's been so damn many) and is currently ending up as a very, very gen-flavored meditation on mathematics and what can and cannot be calculated. This should tell you a little about how my brain works.

- Realized that I completely forgot about The Smugglers in my Ben n' Polly Summary About the Love. Should fix that before I get it posted.

- Played DDR at a friend's party recently, which made me realize how much I missed it. I'm still decent at it, although I can't do much past Easy Mode. It was pretty much my only mode of excercise during high school, and after something I'll discuss in a locked post later I've been realizing how badly I need that exercise. Thankfully, Brother said he'd be okay with me taking the PS2 with me to college, so I fully intend to set up DDR in my new room.

- Wore my pantsuit to work today (which doesn't look as good on me as I thought it did, woe). Dad asked if I was honoring Yves Sant Laurent (RIP). It took me a minute to figure out what he was talking about.

And now to bed.

You know what would be great? If the explosive fragfiesta over the LJ TOS was over.

This has gone on way longer than it had to. Look, LJ-staff-people, if you don't want child porn on your servers, fine. You can do that. You're a private site and you get to define your own terms of service - regardless of U.S. laws. Just inform us that you won't be allowing it and be done with it. Don't hide your decision behind U.S. law while trying to paint yourselves as the oppressed defenders of free speech or whatever. Some people will disagree, and some people will leave, but you know what? No resolution to this was going to make everybody happy. The courts are still trying to work this out after over 50 years; you're not going to resolve it in three months.

Also, not posting changes to the Terms of Service on the front page and posting it at a time when many are avoiding LJ for fear of spoilers does not make you look good. Just saying.

This is not to say that I don't have some extremely sharp words for the fandom side of things, but I'll keep those mostly to myself. The one point I'd like to make is that I would like to never again see the argument that child porn explores a natural part of adolescence and growing up.

So sex between minors, who are not emotionally or sexually mature, is natural, is it. Know what else is natural? Allowing the weak, sick, old, disabled, and mentally ill to die so that only the strong can breed. Just because something's natural doesn't make it a good idea. Try again.

Also, there is, in fact, a middle ground between "sex is ungodly and evil" and "here's a condom, kids; go have fun", if you'd care to look. Not everyone who disagrees with you is a Bible-beating homophobe/eratophobe, and while free speech does mean that you can say and believe what you want, it also means that other people have the right to disagree with you.

Still not feeling the Potterdammerung energy, in spite of it being the day of the book's release. I just can't muster up the usual excitement about it this year. The media coverage, the omgspoilers! fiasco, the constant opining by book critics and mediafolk alike, the sheer volume of wank the Harry Potter fandom generates even among those not involved in it (like myself) - I think it's worn me down. I'm not staying up till midnight; I'm not going to read it all in one straight session (but I never did, so whatever). It was a fun adventure, and I'm sad that it's over. But...I'm excited, but not at the fever pitch I thought I would be.

I brought a cake in to work today, because my coworkers and I joked about it being "cake day" yesterday for motivational purposes. Except it turns out the company was already holding a surprise retirement party for one of it's members and there was cake down there. So I brought a cake and nobody ate it. And it's going to sit in the fridge till Monday. I fail.

I also signed up for [profile] 1sentence and claimed Michael from Burn Notice, Ye Series of the Four-Episode Canon. Clearly I have lost my mind.
