"Fern Hill", by Dylan Thomas, is my new favorite poem ever. I managed to zone out almost entirely in my litcrit class today because I was rereading it in our poetry textbook. This did lead to a somewhat embarrassing moment when I was called up to the board to explain a certain poem's meter. (Although the fact that I can never remember which symbol means "unstressed" and which one means "stressed" contributed to the humiliation somewhat.)

I remain bound and determined to finish the first chapter of That Fic by the end of the week, or at least after class lets out on Friday. It's so temptingly close to being finished and not completing it is driving my batty. I keep going back to it when I should be doing my work.

Also, I got the Across the Universe soundtrack over the break (I caved while getting my brudder his birthday present), and now, for some reason, I have this urge to learn to draw again and do a whole bunch of themed Three/Jo fanarts to Beatles music.

See, in my head, Jo's become tied to the Beatles ever since she quoted "I Am The Walrus" in The Three Doctors, and so now whenever I hear the songs on the soundtrack, I think of her - and thus of Three, and the Brig, and Mike, and Benton, and etc.

See, "I Am The Walrus" would have to involve Jo Having Adventures with Two and Three and possibly One, since The Three Doctors is where the association came from. And then "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" could be the Doctor taking Jo to some surreally-colored alien world, and her thinking it's completely amazing. "Being For The Benefit of Mister Kite"? Alien circus. "Revolution"? Off-world political agitation that they somehow get involved in, of course. "With a Little Help From My Friends"? UNIT family.

And then there'd be things like "All You Need Is Love", which would be shamelessly squishy and involve HUGGING.

I have no idea what I'd do with "Happiness is a Warm Gun" and I refuse to discuss where my brain went with "Helter Skelter".

I'm pretty sure this counts as a Crime Against Fandom. *shame* Also, I have a crazy girlcrush on Dana Fuchs.

[ETA] I just realized that "Oh! Darling" would be a little bit perfect for something post-Claws of Axos, when/if Jo calls the Doctor on his "I'm leaving with the Master, enjoy the nuclear apocalypse!" stunt. Sure, it would be sappy and overtly shippy in a way that I try to avoid being, but THAT'S WHY IT'S A CRIME AGAINST FANDOM.

And maybe "Dear Prudence" could be a pre-Curse of Peladon thing, where Jo's about to head off on her date and the Doctor tempts her with Adventures!

*more shame*

Back to work. It occurs to me that class selection is coming up soon, and I still don't really know what I'm taking. Heck, I still haven't declared a major or anything. Bah, decision-making. I pretend I don't have to do it.

Mood:: 'giggly' giggly
Music:: All You Need is LOVE!

"Fern Hill"...is my new favorite poem ever

Time held me green and dying
Though I sang in my chains like the sea

Oh yeah.

The last line is what cemented my love for it, really. I mean, I liked the whole thing, but that last line was so perfect it made me a bit teary. XD

Exactly! How can anyone resist those last two lines?

I'd only ever heard the last two lines of that poem, and have since remedied that issue. I adore the way Dylan Thomas plays with words, and this is such a lovely, lovely poem.

Aah, Three/Jo Beatles-themed fanart? I think I would explode from the awesome. I would, yes. It helps that I'm currently renewing my Beatles!love via online radio. And for some reason, despite the overly cheesy (very Paul) lyrics, "I Will" has eaten my brains lately. Anyway, yes. Would offer you assorted firstborn children (probably not my own, but I keep a back-order handy) for such fanart. :D

And ooh, best of luck in decision-making! It is so very annoying to have to delineate exactly what you want to do. Hope it goes well for you!

Oh, yes. That's what I loved so much about the poem - you barely have to think about what the words actually mean if you don't want to. They sound so lyrical and beautiful all on their own.

While "I Will" wasn't one of my favorites, it does emphasize one of the great things about the Beatles - even when the lyrics didn't sparkle, the songs are still terribly catchy. :D

So far, Jo's actually quite a lot of fun to sketch - she's got this very cute, dollish face that lends itself to exaggeration or animation well. Three's a bit more difficult; because he's got such a distinctive face, I've got very little room for error. Drawing his costume's fun, though. *g*

And thanks for the good wishes! I think it'll go okay, since there's one class I'm required to take next semester, one that I really want to, and two empty slots. Shouldn't be quite as intimidating as it looks, it's just the idea of having to finally start filling in my requirements...*shrug* But thank you!

So, it is a nice cover album the soundtrack? I noticed the movie before it really came out but I've been reading some pretty conflicting reviews about it.

And oh, do fanarts! Also, if you can squeeze Two in, it'll be all the more fun! ;D

(Haha, I love that Three Doctors moment.)

Good luck with your school stuff, just don't get yourself too stressed out for it. You know.. It'll come to you, and all that. :)

So, it is a nice cover album the soundtrack?

It is, actually. I just recently caught the movie and was a bit meh about it - it was fun but hardly The Best Musical Ever, and on occasion it felt like they just threw songs in there for the hell of it. The soundtrack, however, is lovely. Everyone's got really good voices, and they're not afraid to tweak the song a bit to fit the singers (so the covers don't feel stodgy). Plus, everything Dana Fuchs' voice touches turns to musical gold. :D

(In fact, I think I might like the covers of "Come Together" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" better than the originals. Yes. Blasphemy. I know.)

Hehe...it's been such a while since I did fanart. I've got to get back in practice before I do anything epic. However, it'll be nice picking up the habit again.

And I'm okay with admitting that the Beatles' reference made me giggle.

Thanks for the good wishes! I know it'll all work out, but that looming deadline's still a bit worrying. :D

How is Three/Jo a crime against fandom? I mean, the show shipped them. :d

I really like this idea. I now want to make a Jo fanmix with Beatles songs. ...except she also quotes Age of Aquarius at some point, so perhaps the Fifth Dimension will also end up in there. Or general trippy groovy sixties/seventies Jo fanmix--OOH. OMG.

See, Three/Jo wouldn't be the crime against fandom. The shamelessly warm-and-fuzzy, overtly shippy turns this project would take, on the other hand? That would be. Especially since I'm supposed to be all about the Very Serious Examinations of the Doctor/Companion relationship and the fundamental unknowability of the character and the obstacles of the Doctor's alien nature and dammit they're so cute in The Curse of Peladon.

Ahem.

Also, I wholeheartedly approve of a Jo fanmix, particularly one involving both The Beatles and The Fifth Dimension. That is an excellent idea.

THIS IS BIZARRE, because I totally wrote a very unintelligible squee post about them under the cut title "Reasons the Doctor and Jo are cuter than you in The Curse of Peladon."

But they ARE warm and fuzzy and overtly shippy. But yeah, you don't want to take it too far even so. Let their intense amounts of squishy speak for itself (and it DOES omg).

"Reasons the Doctor and Jo are cuter than you in The Curse of Peladon."

Because they ARE! I will never tire of the conversation you quoted. Or of her calling him a name-dropper at the end. Or of that look he gives her when she insults him in front of the diplomats.

I'll try to keep the squee in check. XD I don't think it's quite gone too far yet. Well, there's post-danger hugging. Is hugging going too far? I don't think it is.

That's like half of what they do, though! So, no, I wouldn't say too far at all. You can't faithfully bypass the hugging.

I love the way you've connected the songs with those scenes, and I'm looking forward to see the fanart, if you ever decide to draw them.

And I Am the Walrus will forever be linked to Jo in my mind as well. In fact, after rewatching The Three Doctors, I've had the idea of making quote icons of the classic series - and that particular moment will have a place of honour in the Third Doctor batch.

Thank you! I've started doodling Jo to start to get back in the habit of drawing people again, so I think this might just go somewhere instead of sitting around being cracky. :D And I love the idea of quote icons, so I look forward to those as well.

Yay! I can't wait to see how it will turn out :)

And I love the idea of quote icons, so I look forward to those as well.
I've already posted the First Doctor batch (I'm making this in order), which you can find here. Hopefully, the following batches will be bigger.

OOo, i love the Across the Universe soundtrack, and I still need to see the movie, unfortunately, by the next time I go home, we willn't have it on Demand anymore

I liked the movie okay. It was interesting, at least, even if it occasionally didn't make sense. It's worth a rental, at least.

The best part about this poem is it is set to music, and Choir got to sing it last year. It was amazing. It makes an incredible poem even better in a musical setting.

So... yeah.

Pretty amazing.
