I have my homework done on time, I have everything packed, it's looking like I might finally get some sleep...and then I stay up late writing.

I also blame my writing for how badly I did on that take-home Bio quiz. How was I supposed to answer questions in my distracted state?

So I might as well post what it was that kept me up this late, right? Right.

The 250-word Writing Meme, shamelessly thieved from [personal profile] eponymous_rose.

The rules!

1. There are no rules. (Yay!)
2. Pick five fandoms.  List them in alphabetical order.

1. CSI: Las Vegas
2. CSI: Miami
3. CSI: New York
4. Doctor Who (old and new)
5. Law & Order (TOS)

3. Visit this site to find your first RANDOM POEM OF POWER.  Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it's an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe).  Repeat five times and - you guessed it - list 'em in alphabetical order!

4. I think you can see where this is going.  Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting - make your brain explode!), using the line from the poem as a prompt.  You don't have to include it in the half-drabble - it's just inspiration.

5. Bravo!  Have a cookie.

1. August
Fandom: CSI
Prompt: But when the August weather breaks
Characters/Pairings: Sara Sidle
Spoilers: “Living Doll”/”Dead Doll”

August is heavy, the desert’s last crescendo of heat and thundercloud. You could die in the Mojave any time, but August makes you believe it.

August is when the sun could sear you alive, or what rain there was could trap you beneath an upturned car and let you drown.

2. End
Fandom: CSI: Miami
Prompt: God help me now, how close I've come to God.
Characters/Pairings: Eric Delko
Spoilers: “No Man’s Land”/”Man Down”

What had he expected after he died, anyway? God? Marisol? The proverbial white light?

He can almost laugh about it, because he’s been there, the place you’re supposed to be ready for. And maybe it’s Heaven or Hell, maybe it’s just an ending, but he couldn’t remember whatever it was.

3. Platitudes
Fandom: CSI: New York
Prompt: if Love means protect then whenever I do not
Characters/Pairings: Stella Bonasera, Don Flack (could be Flack/Stella, if you wanted it to be, but I didn’t write it with that in mind)
Spoilers: “All Access”

There’s nothing you could have done.

God knows how many times he’s said it to someone else. Sometimes it’s even true.

So why does it feel like greeting-card bullshit now that it’s applied to him, now that she’s bruised and beaten and he should’ve done something, there should’ve been something?

4. Bits and Pieces
Fandom: Doctor Who
Prompt: She wanted him complete inside her
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Tenth Doctor, one-sided Martha/Ten (And here I swore I’d never write this. I deserve only death. *shame*)
Spoilers: Season 2 (And Season 3…if you don’t know who Martha is)

He’s scattered, and she wants him whole.

There are fragments of him wandering fringes of space-time she’ll never see; there’s a part of him that never left Canary Wharf; everywhere he’s been he’s lost something of himself.

There’s so much gone by now that there isn’t anything left for her.

5. New
Fandom: Law & Order
Prompt: The long and late light had slowly gathered up
Characters/Pairings: Ed Green
Spoilers: Er…Season 17?

So how’s it feel to be the big man on campus, Ed?

The move to senior detective barely registered – same job, same city, same late nights and parking tickets. But when Nina asks him where to go instead of telling him where she’s going, it still feels like something’s ended.

Ooh! *cackles* I remember coming up with this meme - a particularly slow day at work, I think.

This is absolutely amazing - I'm actually fairly familiar with all five fandoms (though I have fallen way behind on L&O and, uh, all three CSIs, sadly), which made me squee. :D

I particularly loved the Doctor Who one - you took what could've been, y'know, done a billion times before and made it absolutely and beautifully unique. Awesome! :D

I'm really hoping this meme catches on again - I love reading what people come up with! *crosses fingers*

Edit: Whoops. Totally random icon! Hee!

Oh, I'm so glad you like the Who ficlet. I really, really wanted to do something other than Doctor/Martha, since, like you said, that's been done a billion times before, but nothing else seemed to fit the prompt as well. I'm happy it turned out okay. :)

And this is an excellent meme - much though I whine about staying up late, it was a lot of fun to do. Trying to capture the feeling of the prompt in just 50 words was quite a challenge!

I'm hoping this spreads as well; I haven't seen a meme quite like it, and it's sure to trigger some unique responses. I might do it again, actually, at some point when it's not as late.

Um...guh. These are all so gorgeous, especially in relation to the prompts. I tried and utterly failed at this meme, so the fact that you got five successful mini-drabbles written is incredibly impressive.

Especially the one for Doctor Who, which is just...how did you manage to involve Martha, even unrequited, and make me love it? How?? I'm going to memorize that one and possibly quote part of it (with credit and your permission, if I may) somewhere during my season 3 reviews, if I ever get there, because it's just so very illustrative.

But I also really liked the line in the first one, "You could die in the Mojave any time, but August makes you believe it", and the whole tone of the one for Law & Order.

I'm happy you enjoyed them! Making sure the ficlets had any relation to the prompts was probably the most difficult bit of it, since there's all that meaning to be packed into 50 words. And it is harder than it looks, isn't it. (But I still encourage you to try it, because I selfishly want to see what you'd come up with.)

And feel free to quote as you wish - I'm very happy that I could make Season 3 sound good for you. :D Thank you!

*lubs them*

Remind me to do this one, wouldja? I always forget the cool memes. :(

These drabbles are wonderful! I'd do the meme, but sadly, I don't have five fandoms.

Perhaps you could use five characters, arranging their names in alphabetical order?

(I say this because I really want to see what you'd come up with for something like this, and I am frantically trying to tweak the rules.)

I followed your suggestion, and did the meme. It's here (http://clearbell.livejournal.com/522659.html).

*nudge nudge nudge* Do iiiiit. I selfishly desire to see what you'd write.

Jesus H. Fuck. I didn't know the poems would be that hard! I had a poem about rat shit. And one of my lines is just the word "husband". And I got Emily Dickinson. Oh sure, her writing *sounds* pretty, but who wants to have her over for dinner? Heavy metal bands use death more sparingly. Geez, Muppet. You could've warned me. ;) (Also, I don't know where the fuck Lyonesse is, so I'm guessing I can't send detectives there.)

I had a poem about rat shit.

...hold on a second. I'm trying to figure out why anyone would write that poem. I mean, I kind of understand the urge to be all avant-garde and junk, but...why?

You know what? I think if you get a poem like that, you're allowed to move on to the next one. New rule.

"Husband" actually seems like it'd be easier, because you could go just about anywhere with it. It is sort of unhelpful, but it's also non-restrictive. And I couldn't tell you where Lyonesse is either, so I'm afraid I'll be of little help there.

Heavy metal bands use death more sparingly.

*gigglefit* That is the most apt description of Emily Dickinson ever. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love her poetry and everything, but add some grinding guitars in the background and she's got just about any stringy-haired black-clad vocalist you care to name beat.

So, I tried the character-rule tweak, since while I *watch* several fandoms, I participate in few. And I like where it's going a whole lot better. I'll try the first one just to be fair, but I'm really not cultured enough for this one. ;P

I wish you luck in that endeavor. Can't wait to see the result!

(And as for not being cultured enough, bah - my knowledge of poetry just barely eclipses my knowledge of advanced string theory. Culture has nothing to do with this. :D)
