stunt_muppet: (I have the dumb)

I am physically incapable of staying on a schedule. It just doesn't happen.

Anyway, this started out as a drabble for [profile] lawandorder100, but the Criminal Intent finale was just so good that I had to write just a bit more. Heck, I might even expand it further should inspiration strike.

Incidentally, I loved this season finale. Loved it loved it loved it. Reviews almost done.

RL note: I'm starting my job next week. I'm learning my commute route. It's almost June. When did this happen and how do I make it stop?

Title: A Shape They Recognized
Fandom: Law and Order: Criminal Intent
Words: 234
A/N: Spoilers for the season finale, which this drabble takes place a week or two after. Logan-centric.

I’m not dead, Mike.

He wondered why they always said that. Nothing meaningful, nothing significant. Just I’m not dead. Like that changed anything.

He’d read somewhere that dreams were just mental processing, your brain sifting through memories and experiences and trying to make some sense of them. But what about when the two didn’t match up?

He remembered Lennie as very much alive, always present, always there when he came in to work in the morning. Even during his time in Staten Island, he’d half-expected Lennie to be waiting for him, asking where the hell he’d been (he’d barely cared enough to come to work on time, not out there). And the fact that he just wasn’t there one day, and wouldn’t be ever again, didn’t fit into that. Lennie would be there again the next day, just like he always had been, because the dead weight in the coffin Mike had carried wasn’t him.

He remembered Holly, shy and sparkling, wondering when the world would break her heart. Laughing as her dog dragged her along. Not hounded to death by her ex-husband, not so desperate to escape that she would throw herself off a building. They weren’t the same woman. They couldn’t be. Holly Lauren was still alive.

Maybe the dreams were memories, trying to twist reality back into a shape they recognized.

I’m not dead.

He wonders who will say it next.

This may even meander its way over to ff.net.

I really should do that RL update I keep promising at some point

I like this version even more than the one you posted on [livejournal.com profile] lawandorder100. Thanks for sharing.

(And you listen to R.E.M., too! : )

Thank you for reading, and I'm very happy you liked it! Thanks also for the friending. :)

And yes, I love R.E.M., and "Nightswimming" is my favorite of their songs.

Oooh, very purty addition to the finale. Love the concept in the title, and the last line's just bleak enough to leave you with a little shiver. I'm also quite fond of the "shy and sparkling" description of Holly; it just rolls off the tongue. I'm really glad you wrote this - the only thing I love more than a powerful episode is when somebody writes a bit of word art to top it off.
