It's just that I've been in a writing mood and there's little to report in my real life at the moment.

New layout, yo. I was getting sick of perenially having to color my text white, and the white-on-black thing was causing me much eyestrain. Plus, now it's way easier to disguise spoilery text.

Speaking of spoilery text...

So Jesse L. Martin has left Law & Order. I'm upset about it, but okay. Nature of the show. I can deal with it. Really. I can. I'm most certainly not pouting and refusing to watch anything but Orbach/Martin-era reruns in protest, no ma'am.

And Gary Dourdan's leaving CSI. Given that the one of the reasons I started watching CSI was Nick and Warrick's banter and partnership and mad slashy subtext, I am rather mad about this one. In spite of the fact that we've BARELY SEEN WARRICK for the past two seasons, I'm going to miss him when he's gone.

Diane Neal and Adam Beach are both leaving SVU. I hate to sound snide, but I never really got all that attached to Chester Lake, and he never really felt like he fit with the rest of the team. Plus, he was yet another reason for the writers not to give Munch any screentime whatsoever, which isn't good. So I can't say I'm up in arms about that. But Casey? Like it's not bad enough that she's been criminally underused for the past three seasons. Heck, I'm half-worried that they won't bother to replace her - it's not like SVU has gone in the courtroom at all recently, what with all the Drama what's been happening. I miss Casey already; it'll only get worse when she's actually gone.

Also, the showrunners appear to be trying to convince us that Benson is, you know, straight. To which I say pffft. You keep thinking that, Wolf et al.

And now? Now, like all that's not bad enough, rumors are circulating that Khandi Alexander - who remains one of the only consistently good things about CSI: Miami - is taking leave of the show. Which I suppose makes sense, since she's been getting maybe five minutes an episode lately and that must be quite un-fun as an actress but...Alexx. No more Alexx. I'm not sure I can even imagine CSI: Miami without Alexx.

It's like the world wants me to stop watching TV. Which...makes sense, actually.

Anyway, here, have a big empty white space to seperate the spoiler cut from the fic-related blather to follow.

Well, despite my best efforts to work on the fic what's actually got a deadline (which, at the moment, means  [profile] unusuallygenand [profile] churchontime), I ended up all but finishing Chapter 1 of The Memory Always Lies. I like to think it's my apology/I-still-love-you note to Liz after all the Jo-fic I've been doing. :)

The trouble is that I really can't finish a fic unless I've planned it all out ahead of time, and Memory has very abruptly gone from "carefully plotted beforehand" to "making crap up as I go along". It now involves a completely unanticipated robot, for starters. And I think I can even manage to work Jamie and Zoe into it, because everything eventually comes back to Jamie and Zoe.

I mean, I get why I had to fix it, since it was veering dangerously close to the plot of "Human Nature"/"Family of Blood", and there's really very little point in just rewriting the episode with a different Doctor (especially considering the episodes are already a rewrite of the novel with a different Doctor). But it's really disconcerting to finally gather up enough of the plot for the fic to actually be viable and then suddenly have it change.

See, at first I was just going to have Corporal Smith flat-out refuse to open the fobwatch after the alien menace had been dealt with, and to continue to live as Smith (in spite of the Doctor rapidly intruding into his consciousness) until Liz, essentially, tells him that it doesn't matter what he wants; he's the Doctor, whether he wants to be or not. Which is...pretty much the episode. Yeah. Obvious problem.

But then two ideas came to me. For starters, I know in the novel (which I haven't read, for shame, for shame), the character of "Verity", John Smith's lost love, was supposed to appear in his consciousness as a way of reminding him of when he needed to be the Doctor again. What if something rather similar happened here, only with, say Jamie and Zoe, or Susan, as his reminder figure? What if John Smith eventually, as his time ran low, started to remember the watch, but remember it in the context of his own life - as a gift, say, from an old friend named Jamie? And as he started to reach the end of his lifespan he'd become more curious, and remember more of Jamie, and start to seek out the watch until he found it and opened it?

But then I got a better idea.

See, what if the transformation angst wasn't the climax of the story at all? What if, about midway through, Smith opened the watch - but didn't become the Doctor again? See, Memory takes place late in Season 7, so the Time Lords' tampering with the Doctor's memory is fairly recent. And since his memory is still altered - still potentially unstable - messing with his memory via the Chameleon Arch has some unanticipated effects?

See, before he opened the watch, he didn't know he was the Doctor, but he knew he was Corporal John T. Smith. After he opens the watch, he's biologically a Time Lord, and he knows he's not Smith...but he doesn't know he's the Doctor either. His mind's full of two sets of jumbled memories with a few common figures in between, and he's not sure which one's fiction and which one isn't because he can remember both of them. And then, of course, there are some memories from both personalities that are twisted, scrambled, or just gone, lost behind the Time Lord's mental blocks.

I'm a bit worried that this'll be too TVM, but it's not that he doesn't know who he is so much as he doesn't know which one he is, or if he's a little of both, or neither, or what.

One of the figures common to both his memories, of course, is Benton, who gets stuck with the task of helping the semi-fobwatched Doctor sort out what's real and what isn't. But Benton only encountered the Doctor twice before he arrived at UNIT, so there are a lot of gaps that he can't fill in.

Interestingly, experiments in writing this particular plot development ramp up the Smith/Benton subtext to a rather odd level, considering I didn't even mean for there to be subtext there in the first place. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. Also, while I think the dilemma could work, I have no idea how they'd end up fixing the Doctor. I suspect there'd be Skience involved, but precisely what kind of Skience is lost on me. (I could still work Jamie into it, though, expecially since Smith's Jamie would be the friend who gave him the watch - he could be another common figure along with Benton and Liz and the Brigadier. I'm less sure of what I'd do with Zoe.)

And there's still the whole Every How-To-Write Guide Ever Written Has Told You Not To Do Memory-Loss Plots mantra scrolling like breaking news through the back of my mind.

Baaah. I turn to my Church On Time Prison in Space AU in consternation.

Also, I'm contemplating publicly posting "Block Transfer Computations". I'm rather proud of it, considering I wrote it in an hour with only four Adric serials under my belt. On the other hand...it's Adric fic. I can't imagine who'd read it.

I keep meaning to set up a Teaspoon account and I never do.

In other news, [profile] who_otpis having another round of Rare-Ship Drabble Tag, and I highly encourage you to go check it out even if you don't want to write anything for it. Go! Read! After all, we've got Liz/Martha and Ancelyn/Bambera and Ten/Donna and Ten/Charlie Eppes (requested by me and written brilliantly in response) and Ben/Polly and Leela/Romana! You know you're tempted!

I bid you all good night.

Every How-To-Write Guide Ever Written Has Told You Not To Do Memory-Loss Plots
Ignore it. This is awesome. Not to mention that science fiction in general does a lot of things that Every How-To-Write Guide tells you not to do, and yet, people like it. Conclusion? How-To-Write Guides are full of crap.

On the other hand...it's Adric fic. I can't imagine who'd read it.
I would. :(

Hey, How-to-Write guides helped me fight my severe cases of Descriptionexcessitis and Adverb Syndrome. I gotta give them credit for something.

Of course, I'll probably end up doing the memory thing anyway, because it's a handy-dandy plot device and I wanna write it. :)

I would. :(

Yeah, but I wrote it for you, and you've already seen and enjoyed it. Hence no need to make it available for public consumption. (Again, any trepidations I have have no bearing on what I'll actually end up doing.)

Well... true. Guides are helpful for that sort of thing. But honest concrit is also good for it, and it less restrictive.

I wanna write it. :)
That's the best reason for doing anything, particularly in fandom. Unfettered indulgence isn't always great for art, but it's usually true that people who like what they're doing do it well.

I bet if there were more Adric fic that appreciated him, the readers would appreciate him, too.

P.S. 6 minutes into The Sea Devils, and I have nearly a page of live-blog already. Mostly because every ten second I write, "Eee!" ::clings to Delgado!Master:: I WANT TO SKOOSH HIS FACE. I DO. I WANT TO SKOOSH HIM AND GIVE HIM ALL THE PLANETS HE DESIRES.

It's a possibility, but not one I'd bet money on. Which is a shame, because you can do a lot with his character. *sigh* Oh, the wasted fanfic potential.

P.S. I really, really want to read this liveblog. Because YES. Imprisoned!Master practically demands skooshings and love.

I haven't even been watching CSI this season, but I'm very distressed that Gary Dourdan is leaving. If they kill Warrick I will be full of RAGE.

I've not fully caught up since after the hiatus, but...still. One less reason to catch up at all.

And I can't shake the suspicion that they're going to kill off Warrick, much though I'd hate that. They didn't kill off Sara; I'm not sure I trust them to write off two characters without killing one of them. I hope I'm wrong.

1. Ahhh! The layout, it has gone all bright! This will take some adjustment.

2. Proof positive that all these character exits have driven me insane, my first reaction to Beach leaving was "OH MY GOD, NOT ANOTHER ONE, NOOOO!" And then I thought about it and realized "Wait, I've been campaigning for that since he appeared." And then I was still kind of sad anyway.

3. I am still curled up in the fetal position over Khandi Alexander. I thought maybe, just *maybe*, I could handle everyone else? (even though I'm more than a little bitter about Diane Neal & Gary Dourdan, and weirdly despondent over Martin considering I only watch that show half the time at best) And then I thought about losing Alexx and began to sob in despair.

4. Heyyy, Numb3rs crossover fic, isn't that what lured me into Doctor Who in the first place? ALAS, I am pretty sure it was not slashiness that intrigued me. So close, and yet so far.

1. Yes, yes it has. It's a big change, but it's a bit of a relief not to have to read white-on-black text all the time. :) Plus, now I have all those nifty proportionally-sized tags! I've always wanted those!

2. ...I may have done the same thing. I'm so used to panicking over my characters leaving that I just head to panic mode automatically.

3. You know what? I've tried, and no, I actually CAN'T imagine CSI: Miami without Alexx. It doesn't work. And I highly suspect the new ME will be all young and eager and have DRAMA. *headdesk*

4. The actual slash doesn't start until Part 2, though; Part 1 is the Doctor and Charlie mathing at each other. So you could still read it, if you wanted to.

(Also, the Ten/Donna is mostly "Donna issuing verbal smackdowns to the Doctor" rather than anything romantic, so don't let that scare you away. XD)

1. Oh, the tags! Those are great.
3. And I highly suspect the new ME will be all young and eager and have DRAMA. *headdesk
I second your headdesk, and I vote we just don't replace her at all. The crime lab doesn't really need a coroner, do they?

Unless they replace her with NY's Dr. Zao That would be excellent. I miss that guy.

4. Ooh! *perks up* Perhaps I shall read part 1 after all. Can you point me in its direction? Because while I'm sure it's obvious, I seem to be failing spectacualarly at finding any of the fics you mentioned. (Ten/Donna too, since yes, that is exactly what was going to scare me away. However, if there are verbal smackdowns, I'm on board)

3. I kind of think it does, or who's going to exposit over all the dead bodies? I wholeheartedly approve of your plan to move Dr. Zao over from NY, though, because I miss him as well and he kind of fell off the face of the earth.

4. The whole fic is here (http://community.livejournal.com/who_otp/157926.html?thread=1312742#t1312742), but parts 1 and 2 are in seperate comments, so you could just read the first one if you wanted to. And Ten/Donna verbal slapping happens here (http://community.livejournal.com/who_otp/157926.html?thread=1303526#t1303526), and there's a lovely Mickey-and-Donna fic by the same author here (http://community.livejournal.com/who_otp/157926.html?thread=1296358#t1296358). Not all of the prompts or responses are shippy; in fact, most of them aren't. The slash is used indiscriminately here. :D And I'd highly encourage you to check out the rest of the comment fic, since most of it's really, really good.

wait, wait, wait! How is Ben/Polly a rare pairing?! Not on, universe. still, you're right; the ten/charlie fic *was* cute, lol. And pardon me for my dreadful lack of commenting; I've just now turned LJ back on for the first time since last week.

posted by [identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com at 08:10pm on 21/04/2008
Ben/Polly is a rare pairing because people tend to forget that Ben and Polly exist, what with most of their stories being tragically burninated. But in [livejournal.com profile] who_otp's terms, "rare" means "not Ten/Rose, Nine/Rose, Ten/Martha, Nine or Ten/Jack, or Doctor/Master" - not that they don't like those ships, you understand, it's just that fic with those pairings isn't exactly hard to find.

I am so squeefully happy about my Ten/Charlie fic. You have no idea. It's...it's what I didn't know I wanted in that pairing.

And there's nothing wrong with taking a break from LJ - sometimes real life beckons, it does. :)

That's sadly true. I sometimes forget that most other fen don't go poking around script archives the way we do. All it takes is one look at the way Ben calls Polly 'Duchess' and you can see the pairing possiblilities dance before you like visions of sugarplums.

Of course, by the very nature of Who fandom, isn't Jack/anyone automatically not that much of a rare pairing? ::slight eyeroll::

posted by [identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com at 08:29pm on 21/04/2008
Nope. Hence the lack of fic for Ben, Polly, Steven, Dodo, Vicki, Katarina, Sara Kingdom, etc. Of course, much of the fic being written right now is for New Who, so any Classic characters (with the possible-but-not-really exception of Sarah Jane) are rather rare.

isn't Jack/anyone automatically not that much of a rare pairing?

...Not really. See, it might be more plausible than some other rare pairings, but that doesn't mean people write it - he tends to get paired off with Nine, Ten, or Ianto (from Torchwood), and occasionally Rose or Martha. There's a nice Jack/Jamie over in the comments, actually.

posted by [identity profile] rhia-starsong.livejournal.com at 11:53pm on 21/04/2008
Yes, and it's a crying shame that more of the Classic characters aren't being written, but there you have it.

Ah, I see what you mean.

Well, it's true. First with all the E/O subtext and now giving her an actual boyfriend who I just know is going to turn out to be a psychotic stalker or something.

All I've got to say is, by this point we're so knee-deep in Drama that Alex Cabot's mysterious and triumphant return from Witness Protection would not look out-of-place. Not to mention I'd like it a whole lot better than most of the other plot developments. :D

Well, now, if we go about claiming same internet space for jolly old England, we'll be in the same room as a lot of really nasty things. And some really boring things. I'm not sure which is worse. And I do think I've been reading too much of the Doctor's wittering today, as I received yet another Two novel in the post! ::does a happy dance::
