please tell me he fell into foster care because she died. That might placate me slightly.

I hope that's the explanation, because that's at least sort of plausible. No, wait, no it isn't, because why wouldn't Julia come back after her mother died, expecially knowing her son was with her?

Well, I guess it's either that or her mom shows up as a drunk/substance abuser, which makes it even less likely that Julia would leave her kid with her. Either way, I don't like it - it makes this woman so damn flighty, someone who solves her problems by running from them and dumping them on someone else.

I remain under the impression that she pulled a serious disappearing trick and wasn't in contact with her mother during her absence, and maybe didn't know she'd died/nobody was able to contact her. ...of course, that all hinges on the mother-is-dead theory.

Yeah, I give up. Julia is stupid and flighty until such time as (if ever) the show decides to change my mind about that.

Currently, that theory is the only one that makes any sort of sense - because I suppose if she completely left her old life behind, she might not have known about her mom dying - so I too shall stake my hopes, such as they are, on this theory. Not that it makes dear Julia any more responsible or mature-looking...*grumble*
