- Amy is praying to Santa! I like her already. And ooh, crack in the wall, wonder how that’s going to pay off…
- Ah, glad to see the soundtrack is still extremely loud. Or maybe I just have it turned up too high. We’ll see how it meshes with the dialogue.
- “I hate yoghurt. Just stuff. With bits in.” Hee! And Doctor seriously stop making this poor little girl run around for you and messing up her kitchen, you naughty thing.
I rather like that, though. He’s coming across as childlike, here, and a little petulant and over-reacting and intense and sincere. Like the way he brags about not having an aunt, sort of calling Wee Amy’s “you’re lucky” bluff when surely she’s expecting a lecture on how lucky she is to even have an aunt.
Also the girl who plays Wee Amy is both adorable and Quite Good. I adore her mixed skeptical and trusting reaction and how she really isn’t fazed by someone eating fish sticks with pudding. Which is repulsive, by the way.
- “Beans are evil.” I think that might be, in retrospect, my favorite bit of the whole episode. He just delivers the line with such intensity!
- “I used to hate apples. My mum would draw faces on them.” Awwwww.
- “Am I people? Do I even look like people?” :D
- The scene of little Amy packing her suitcase and waiting is at once charming and really rather heartbreaking, because by this point everyone’s seen the episode previews and we know he’s not coming back. Poor Amy. :( And the music actually really helps. (Retrospective comment: And they did follow up on it and OH SHOW YOU DO SUCH WONDERFUL THINGS FOR ME.)
- “Do I just have a face that nobody listens to?” Hee, Doctor, your frustration amuses me. And I like what I’ve seen of Rory so far, and of grown-up Amy, particularly the way her face focuses when the Doctor asks about Amelia Pond.
- “Come on, what’s the bad alien done to you?” Nooo the screwdriver has been tentacled, it is as I always feared. Also I love that Amy looks right at the monster right after he tells her not to. This tells me much about the sort of person she is and I think I like it.
- “It’s an interdimensional multiform from outer space, they’re all terrified of wood.” Banter! I love banter.
- And now I feel even sorrier for Amy. I was hoping she’d have written off the Doctor as a dream, but going through therapy four times? Just…wow. I love the anger when she finally confronts him.
- “I’m worse than everybody’s aunt!” And bobbing up and down while randomly talking to the repair guy who just happens to walk in. (ETA: Or, you know, the son who I assumed was a repair guy, that’ll teach me to not give characters proper appellations. Although I am kind of shipping him with Eleven now, hope that's okay.) He’s so childish, I love it. You can see the Two-ish influences, yes.
- GIANT SCARY EYE THING AAAAH. And in such a pretty snowflake-thing which…kind of makes it worse.
- AMY CATCHING HIM IN THE CAR DOOR YES. I love her even more. She is so assertive and she grabs him by the tie and has this slightly-crazy cheerful-sarcasm thing going. Love love love.
- Dare I suggest that the Doctor losing his old sonic and the use of the TARDIS is meant to comment on the criticism that Nine and Ten used it to do everything and brush their teeth? To prove that the Doctor doesn’t need it, not really?
- “You made me dress up as him!” Heeee I like Rory too. And also what this says about their relationship and that Amy is as bossy with him as she is with the Doctor. Hooray!
- …and I did not liveblog the last half or so of the episode because I was so very excited about it that I forgot to stop the video and close the window. Which, um, eeeeeee. That is an incredibly good sign. But, in conclusion, I was very pleased with the whole frantic pace of the whole thing, and the Doctor’s rather ingenious plan, and the emphasis on what Amy had been through – her disappointment in the Doctor wasn’t brushed off – and Rory’s sadly unanswered demands for explanations and Eleven insisting on new clothes and the callback to all ten previous Doctors and the Doctor being actually believable as a slightly swaggery character towards the end, and the Doctor calling the TARDIS “dear” and “you sexy thing” because she is truly the love of the Doctor’s lives and the new TARDIS design with an old-schoolish central column and have I mentioned how deliriously happy I am about this. I thought maybe you might not have noticed.
So. In conclusion, it am so so happy about this show again and it is so nice. And I’m tempted to just write AMY AMY AMY AMY throughout the whole episode review but I need to save space for Eleven and Rory and the fact that I can hear people talk and and I want to watch the next episode right now but I must go to bed and I still did not get any laundry done tonight, see Who look what you did.

SO WAS I. XD Yay, we both restrained ourselves!
"Do I look like people?"
That has in retrospect become an ADORED line for me. Because when he first said it I was like "yeah, dumbass, don't you know?" But then Eleven/Amy became this very special thing where its a Doctor/companion relationship where they already have a history before they start travelling together, and that includes him using "Do I look like people" as a callback twelve years later and I FLAILED.
"Nooo the screwdriver has been tentacled, it is as I always feared."
XDXDXD
"Dare I suggest that the Doctor losing his old sonic and the use of the TARDIS is meant to comment on the criticism that Nine and Ten used it to do everything and brush their teeth?"
...weeeeeeeell...

SHE IS AMAZING AND I LOVE HER THIIIIS MUCH.
I was sort of okay with "Do I look like people?" even the first time, even knowing the heartbreak that was about to ensue, because it fit with how spacey and childish he was being at the moment, plus he literally didn't know how he looked. His skin could have been blue for all he knew. But as a callback at the end of the episode? Lovely.
But, see, even if he didn't have the sonic screwdriver he still commandeered another fancy gadget, namely the camera phones and internets. But, um, at least it's not as unexplained?

Eleven went back to at least check on her, I don't care if it bollockses the timeline. The thought of Wee Amy waiting like that with no vindication makes me sad.

IT'S TRUE LOVE.
No, really, I love how from all the different posts about the episodes I've seen on my flist, the bit we all agree on is DOCTOR/TARDIS OTP FOREVERRRR. XD

BECAUSE IT'S TRUE. She kicked him out so she could change into her sexy new
lingeriedress! And gave him a new screwdriver!
