so I skimmed everything about the post and comments cause I only have a minute, but:
I can't think of any show or movie that uses Chinese themes that wasn't actually made by a Chinese director that's worth a damn.

AVATAR. is the greatest. like it's spectacular.

I'd hear about the non-RaceFailyness of Avatar (though I neglected to mention it - thanks for the reminder), but the sad thing is it's the only one I can come up with. Movies, live-action TV, nothing. A couple of video games like Okami manage not to be Orientalising, but overall it's a pretty grim figure.
