See, I...wouldn't. I want to like the Doctor - I'm used to liking the Doctor, flaws and all - and I find characters who waver and make mistakes and come close to breaking but *don't* much more interesting than those that do. Broken characters are fun, yeah, but there's comparatively little attention devoted to how people heal and redeem themselves and I find that fascinating.

That, and most of my experience with characters cracking under strain has been from awful, trying-too-hard Darker And Edgier fic and spinoffs, so I kind of got unfairly turned off the trope.

But if he ended up going so crazy he became Crazy Awesome instead? That, I might be able to get behind. :)

I don't want him to go all evil overlord, but I don't think that's the kind of crazy he is anyway. But nicely deranged has been threatening to happen for so long and it is that sneaking potential that I love so very, very much. I would probably like him for the madness. XD I like watching and writing a good story about people bringing them up from the dredges, but the Doctor's story just...looks like an extended meltdown stretching across millenia. He could lapse into it and fight it off in a repeating pattern until death finally comes, that's fine, but he's pretty fucking insane and I love that about him. He's our protagonist, turning his nose up at the stuffiness of his society (even while he proudly considers himself part of it), but on the other side, I like getting these glimpses into the fact that when the authorities call him a "renegade," they're not just being stubbornly traditional and there's a bit of a reason why he gets listed with (albeit more destructive) certain other members of his class.
