stunt_muppet: (classic doctor who)

So in-costume shots of Matt Smith's Doctor and Karen Gillan's Companion (not to mention the Companion's name) have hit the interwebs. I'm not going to link them here since I'm sneaking this in on my lunch break, but if you can't find the pictures on Google or somesuch you're not really trying. (I'll probably link to them later.)

OMG.

You know how long it's been since I felt this excited about New Who? It has been a while, let me tell you. Because Eleven's costume neatly resolves most the worries I had about him being played by someone so young. I feared that, given some of Moffat's interviews, Eleven would be this swaggery hipster in tight pants and leather and emo hair and would possibly even sparkle in the sun, and while I can deal with the Doctor being swaggery I was not enthused about him being the latest in a long line of Broody Twentysomething Protagonists.

But if Eleven's dressed in professorial tweed and a bow tie that I just want to reach through the screen and tweak and suspenders omg that makes it all the more likely that he'll be written and played as an older man in a young man's body - much like Five, really. Which is exactly how I wanted Eleven to be, both to balance out Matt Smith's youth and to act as a counterpoint to the past two Doctors, who were more intense and occasionally manic for all their dialogue about how old they were. Which wasn't a bad thing, but it'll be nice to have a change of pace. I look forward to Eleven being grumpy to people and occasionally subtly insulting them a la Two.

Which is the other thing I like about his outfit - it looks like he nicked Two's outfit and topped it off with one of Four's jackets - the one from Planet of Evil, I believe. Old-Schoolery ftw.

Also Amy! Amy Pond! Clearly her last name is a clue that she will have major chemistry with River Song when she reappears. But it's a cute name all on it's own, and Karen Gillan looks darling in costume - the oversized shirt and sneakers (which she apparently swiped from Ten before he regenerated) look really works on her. Also she is wearing a miniskirt, and I tend to like companions in miniskirts, even if the skirt-and-leggings look doesn't really do it for me no matter who's wearing it. In addition I take this as pre-emptive evidence that Eleven is a legs man, thus giving him that much in common with my two favorite old-school Doctors. I'm all set to like them both already.

River Song is apparently coming back as well, mysteriously blonde this time! I have to admit, I didn't dislike River in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, but I wasn't really enthusiastic about her. She had a lot of interesting potential as a character, but I didn't feel like much of that potential got explored. Thus I am happy that she might get a chance to be further fleshed out, given a bit more dimension and more life. The ballgown she's got on is very, very pretty as well. If I continue to get my wishes for S5 she will travel with Eleven and Amy for a while and have subtext with Amy team up with Amy to tease Eleven and be part of an awesome two-companion TARDIS because Moffat likes Five and Five always had at least two companions. That may be a bit much to hope for, though.

Also also also for some reason looking at Eleven in costume just makes me all the more excited for the possibility of Timothy Dalton!Master. I don't know why but it works even better if Eleven is played older. In fact I am envisioning something akin to Two and the War Chief in War Games or the conversation at the Master's desk in The Mind of Evil only played with Dalton and Smith. It is a beautiful vision and I shall treasure it forever.
Really must go back to work now; possibly I shall spam you all further this evening.

What, no ruffles or velvet? Darn! Still, it's a sight better than I was fearing it would be, and suspenders are worth a scad of bonus points all by themselves.

Not everyone can work the velvet-and-ruffles look the way Pertwee or McGann could, though, and Smith seems a little small for it to look good on him. The wearer kind of has to be a bit tall so all those textures and colors have room to happen, you know?

There are no drainpipe jeans anywhere. Not even on Amy. That alone has put me in a good mood for the rest of the day.

I really hope he's a bit grouchy and brainy and uses that LABORATORY THEY'RE PUTTING IN THE TARDIS INTERIOR SET quite a lot. :-D

OMG is this lab gonna be (in) the console room or are we getting a second room? Kinda hoping for the latter, on grounds of keeping the console room spare, but it's all good.

HE'S GOING TO HAVE A LABORATORY? *jumps up and down* Possibly the only thing that could make me even *more* happy about S5 is the Doctor being a proper scientist again and solving the problems of the week using ludicrous technobabble, polarity reversal optional. I know Moffat has disdained technobabble in the past but shush, reality has no place in my wishful thinking.

A LABORATORY! ON THE CONSOLE SET! If that one turns out to be a false spoiler I'll cry.

Hopefully this River will be River meeting the Doctor or in the midst of knowing a Doctor who knows her so we'll get hardcore River instead of sappy River, which is really the stuff that killed it for me. I liked her alright, but I can't really get that involved with one shot romantic interests, and the sap made it worse.

The set reports make it sound like they're already familiar with each other when they meet again. That's a good sign IMO.

That's what got to me - I liked the concept of River as a companion the Doctor hadn't met yet, and I thought she was nicely acted, but it seemed like her whole role in the episode was limited to telling the audience that the Doctor was wonderful and amazing and the best thing since pie and I really hear more than enough of that from, oh let me think, *every other character in New Who*. If we get less of that and River gets to be more of an independent person, I think I'll be pushed over the line from "objectively I can see that she's cool but eh" to "let's write fic about River yay"

The weirdest part is, I feel like if he WAS a swaggery hipster in tight pants and leather and emo hair, I'd like him better. Instead the costume finalization just killed whatever tiny vestiges of chance I was willing to maybe give.

LOL @ sparkling in the sun, though. :P

And...shoot. I've been thinking of the companion as "Karen" for so long that I don't think I'll ever believe her name is Amy. Partly because I don't want to. Damn you, show! You know my weakness for redheads named Amy!

Now back to my regularly scheduled moping and Pain In The Heart at all the horrendous CHANGE that is happening/DENIAL DENIAL DENIAL.

I just have a particularly low tolerance for emo hair. Ever since Peter Parker got it at an extremely inopportune moment in the most recent Spider-Man movie I've sort of never wanted to see it on anyone ever again. I'm glad Eleven avoided that fate. Also because there are very few people that tight pants look good on, and I just don't know if Matt Smith was one of them. He might have been - he's pretty skinny - but I don't want to take that chance.

LOL @ sparkling in the sun, though.

When the first publicity photos of Matt Smith debuted - the pictures of him standing by the TARDIS looking inhumanly pale - someone on the anonmeme commented "My God! He's DAZZLING!" and an inevitable stream of Twilight/Growing Up Cullen references followed, culminating in a meme post that depicted Eleven in a sparkly Aretha hat. It was a little surreal.

Ten still has two or three more specials to hang around! Change is not coming quite yet. And also...um, there's an SJA spoiler that might make you happy, but I'm not sure how you feel about continuing the Spoiler Lockdown.

Hah! Good reasoning, I suppose. Unrelatedly: do you have a link to Eleven in a sparkly Aretha hat?

The MEGA-HUGE casting spoiler? Oh yeah, that one I've known as soon as it came out -- is the reason I finally caught up with the series, and a mitigating factor in why it's among my top 5 most-anticipated show returns.

I think I might actually have a heart attack and die anticipating this joy before I ever actually see it, though. Every time I think directly about the idea of them sharing a screen again, this time in her element, my heart rate seems to double.

The post with that image as the header is here (http://community.livejournal.com/who_anon/4094.html), but if you're a smarter person than me and don't want to get sucked into the anonmeme, I have the image uploaded on TinyPic: http://i26.tinypic.com/htvcqu.gif

I KNOW. I'm still not entirely happy with School Reunion, but Tennant fanboying over Lis Sladen warms my heart every time I see it. And it means Ten gets to meet Luke and Clyde and Rani and maybe they will do teaming-up-type things and he and Luke will get on so well. I'm ever so excited about it.

Oh, Ten + Luke = best thing ever. One, Luke will finally meet an adult smarter than him who can appreciate his brain without wanting to harness it for nefarious world-conquering purposes. Two, those few seconds of interaction they have in "Journey's End" are honestly one of my favorite parts of the episode. Which is silly, but I'm VERY ENCHANTED by the prospect of them meeting in person.

I'd be happier if Maria were still around to participate in the fun, but I think I can manage with Clyde and Rani. Mostly I think I'm just really vicariously proud of my scrappy teenage team and can't wait for him to see them.

Perhaps if going forwards does not appeal to you, going backwards will? Because if you find yourself enjoying the Three-and-Sarah eps, you might also enjoy the Three-and-Jo eps, and starting with Sarah will give you some time to get to know Three before moving on to unfamiliar territory. Also the Three-and-Jo era contains the earliest version of the Master. He does not make as many funny faces as Simm!Master but he is rather sarcastic and he kills people with inflatable plastic chairs.

(I personally quite like Three's first companion, Liz, as well, but I'm not sure how you'll feel about her. I have a feeling you'll like Jo.)

Hee! That is actually kind of my plan, if ever I make it to/through the 2009 specials. The thought of having a whole delightful world of Three - with or without Sarah* - cheers me up immensely.

* Question! In SJA, she makes rather a fuss about the necessity of the Sarah JANE, but elsewhere she's quite frequently just addressed as Sarah, including by Ten. How is it in Old School?

Aaaaand, SOLD! You're good at this.

The old show mostly calls her Sarah, though the Doctor occasionally calls her Sarah Jane when it sounds better. A whole bunch of the characters (the Brigadier, the UNIT soldiers who appear more than once, occasionally Three in the early episodes) call her Miss Smith, actually. From what I can remember she always introduces herself as Sarah Jane Smith, but it's variable what people actually call her, and I don't think she ever corrects anyone if they call her Sarah.

It's only once, but it's an inflatable chair and it eats someone. Well, suffocates them, but 'eating them' sounds funnier.

CLEARLY THIS MEANS I HAVE MORE PICSPAMS TO DO. :D
