Oi! Livejournal! It's a Saturday afternoon! I'm bored! MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN.
I think I make writing Miami fic more difficult than it has to be.
See, in writing Little Brother, I end up writing about certain important events in the lives of the Brothers Caine, such as the deaths of their parents, Ray's wedding, Horatio moving to Miami, the birth of Ray Jr., H joining the bomb squad and then the crime lab, etc. Trouble is it's never adequately defined when these occurred, or even in what order they occurred.
This opens the door to all kinds of writing problems. Actually, the biggest wrinkle in here is when they moved to Miami. Was it before or after their Dad died? Before or after Ray married Yelina (it could be either - Miami isn't the only place on the planet that has a Latino population)? How old were they at the time? Did they move at the same time or was there a time when they were seperated? Did they stay in contact while they were in Miami?
I've been trying to put together a timeline of events so that I can keep everything straight, and so far I have an order that I think could work, but there's just not enough to go on. I have no idea when anything happened. TWTB, a little help, please.
Wikipedia has been of little to no help. All I managed to get from that is that Ray's first "death" occurred in 1999. But the rest? Heck, we don't even get how old Ray Jr. is. Or how old Ray Sr. is, for that matter.
Also, I refuse to believe that (as Wikipedia tells me) Horatio was born in 1950 and is therefore 57 years old. For starters, hello? Wikipedia? Last week you told me it was 1960. wtf.
Also, the fact that I'm attracted to someone who's edging on 60 (yes, yes, I know, David's only 51 so it doesn't really count) makes me feel sort of icky. No more icky then I felt having to explain my Munchlove to Mom, but still. Sometimes I think there's something a bit wrong with me.
Le sigh. I suppose I could tell show canon to jump in a lake and just write events the way I think they should progress. Heck, the people who write this show barely pay attention to show canon; why should I worry about it?

Hhaah, I like guys older than me. Hahah, I love 30 somethings

Yes, I know, but liking thirty-somethings isn't the same as liking *fifty-somethings*...*sigh*
In which RS rambles before coming to a point.
And yes, the lack of canon details surrounding Horatio's family is mildly irritating, hence why I point out an average of once a month how season 5 should be telling me things involving Horatio's past in New York. Anyway, the original OS biography listed his year of birth as 1960, and while admittedly OS biographies tend to be worthless...it was something. And then there was the ep in season 1 where he was asking about bullet caliber and Calleigh answered with "how old are you?" (45).
I always thought he'd been born and raised in Miami and later moved to New York, or at least that's how I worked it out in my head in an attempt to connect what few canon details there were with what was on the OS. Which...I already established was somewhat worthless, so um, never mind.
You know what, you should do absolutely whatever you want. When a particular fic is well-written enough, I tend to consider it canon until the show specifically contradicts me. And even then, fans sometimes do a better job with backstory than the official writers.

...ack. I give up. I think the 1999 date was indirectly derived; it was listed somewhere that Madison was 4 when she was introduced in "Big Brother", and since she was born shortly after Ray died, and the episode aired in 2003 (and I'm assuming that the year it airs corresponds to the year it takes place), I figured Ray'd died around 1999-ish. But apparently not.
And the 1960 birth date makes much more sense (and makes me feel less icky), so I'm going with that. Wikipedia is lying to me. *growls*
I tend to think that he grew up in New York simply because New York City spawns detectives. :) I think I like your explanation better - if he's never lived anywhere but New York, he's got no reason to head to Miami once he leaves - but by this point there's so much of his life to keep track of that I'd rather keep him in one place as much as possible. It just makes things easier.
You know, up until now it hadn't even occurred to me to check the site biography. I'd checked the site's episode summaries, but not the bios. That might help.

See, I kind of liked the mystery and the slow reveal until I had to write about it.
