stunt_muppet: (I have the dumb)
Add MemoryShare This Entry
A quick and mindless meme, because I really, really need something quick and mindless right now that doesn't take up as much time as screencapping (the picspams are coming along, really, but capping takes a while and it's not time that I have right now):

Name any pairing from any of my fandoms and I'll talk about my thoughts/opinions on them!

Again, mostly just posting on it so I can make you all do it in turn. :)

And, so this post is not entirely self-indulgent and memey, have a video of the Muppets' take on Ingmar Bergman:

THAT IS THE CUTEST GRIM REAPER EVER. Also lol @ sweetish meatballs.

As for the meme... talk to me about Jamie/Cybermans. Because it's practically canon. Yus. >>

Edited because I used THE WRONG ICON. How could I do that??? :O

JAMIE/CYBERMANS IS MORE CANON THAN YOU. It is trufax I used skience.

Anyway, after writing that tiny wee fic snippet, it's starting to become my personal canon of a sorts. I mean, there was no reason for that Cyberman to spare him, and he was making an awful lot of noise that could blow its cover; the logical response is to shut him up somehow, and sadly probably not in a sexy way. And yet it doesn't. It doesn't even move him. And the only true explanation of that, for me, is that the Cybermen may not feel as humans do, but somewhere in their programming they recognize emotion, and this particular Cyberman still has those few key circuitry faults that somewhere, somehow, failed to completely wipe out empathy. The human is hurt and sick; it knows it does not want to hurt it further but does not know why. It poses no threat, at any rate; leaving it will be sufficient.

Jamie, for his part, learned later that what he saw was a Cyberman and not the Phantom Piper, but sometimes, after he returned home, in the haze just before waking, he would again see the figure of the faerie creature that spared him, and wonder why it had allowed him another day.

Writing that felt incredibly strange.

:DDDDDD

I still love the Cyberman's bit, which was in the snippet, but the Jamie bit is new and I love it bunches (even though it's set post-War-Games and so it automatically sad.)

It pleases me to create new fanon in people's heads. Someday Jack/Xena will be fanon. Someday.

ETA: I stole a quote from you for my journal header. Because it made me giggle and is shiny like a beacon of truth.

It's very satisfying, yes. I think I may have done it a couple of times, and it gives me a little thrill of glee to know that my ideas are worth spreading and sensible (or nonsensical) enough to do so. :D

I like your new journal header. I like it very much.

Uhhhhhhhh...Four/Sarah...? And since you clearly want to, you can reply with one for me. :d

"A serious figure appeared..." OMFG.

I can't quite decide whether I ship Four/Sarah or I like them better as ambiguously-romantic best buddies, but either way I love how they complement one another. Sarah grounds the Doctor whenever he starts going too far off the rails and into his own head; she pokes fun at him when he takes himself too seriously. She counterbalances him, and Four, who is very much a wanderer and operates mostly on his own wavelength, needs that.

And yet that doesn't mean it's all bickering; they laugh, and tease each other, and gratuitously hold hands, and genuinely have fun with each other. Even later in her run, when Sarah's trying to get home, she doesn't get too upset when they wind up somewhere else, at least up until The Hand of Fear. And yet she does want to go home; she knows she can't travel forever and she does want something more stable, a life she has more control over, which she knows the Doctor can't give her.

Also, they adorable. The Doctor's tendency to just pick her up and put her places when he needs her to be somewhere; the way she cries over him when she thinks he's dead; how absolutely bonkers he goes when she's in danger...aw.

Talk to me about Five/Nyssa!

Beaker is a very, very serious figure indeed.

*squeak squeak*!!!

"Talk to me about Five/Nyssa!"

It may be one of the healthier relationships the Doctor has had, and even then it's got a lot about it that's messed up. They communicate not only as equals, but as people who are very at ease with and used to each other, and have great respect for one another. He in particular is very, very impressed with how calm and sweet and together she is in the face of everything. Underneath that, though, there's a lot of unspoken guilt and a little rationalized-away resentment stemming from him being sort of responsible for her whole planet being dead and the Watcher picking her out to be saved. All of the messed up circumstances behind how they came together makes the connection all the more intense. There's also the fact that he's a lot more dependent on her than she is on him. On the one hand, it's cute and kind of funny, because he's a spaz and they look like your archetypal married couple, but on the other hand she plainly doesn't have her hopes and dreams hinged on him -- at it's most basic level he really is just something that happened to her out of the blue -- so as much as he completely adores her and as clear as it is that she cares about him, there's always the pangs of knowing that they're not going to be together forever.

Jack/K9!

And feel free to give me one as well. You know you want to...

posted by [identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com at 06:05pm on 24/04/2009
It does make sense!

Anyway, I think the way Jack looks at K9 in Journey's End says it all. If that isn't an "Awesome! Why don't I have a robot dog?" face, I don't know what is.

And they have so many opportunities to meet each other, what with Jack having time-traveled (he could have met Sarah during that confusing period when she had a K9 for some reason, I never quite got that), Jack working for an agency that collects and examines alien artifacts (maybe there was a little bit left of K9 Mark III after School Reunion?), and there being an unaccounted-for K9 who presumably got out of E-space somehow...

Considering the ways we've already seen Jack communicate with robots, I think he'd take to K9 right away. K9 is analytic and helpful but still cheerful and just a touch snarky, and he doesn't have any personal angst that needs dealing with (well, unless it's the E-Space K9. And possibly K9 Mark III, because he'd want to go back to Sarah). Plus, he could potentially live forever, which is always nice when so few other people will.

In conclusion, Jack/K9. Totally happened.

Talk to me about Jamie/Victoria, Jamie/Zoe, and/or Two/Jamie, as you see fit. :D

Ooh, three requests!

Jamie/Victoria
Jamie worships the ground she walks on - and she knows it. She's too much of a lady to comment on it, but it's clear that she sometimes takes advantage of it (but not in a malicious way) and has him wrapped around her little finger. I think she secretly ships Two/Jamie, though, and is aware of just how much those two need each other - which is why she never asks Jamie to stay with her when she decides she has had enough of the life of a time traveller. She knows Jamie would follow her anywhere if she asked him to, but is well aware that he'd regret it forever.
And it always breaks my heart to think that, if Season 6B or my girl!Doctor fics never happened, Jamie would forget about Victoria.

Jamie/Zoe
Oh, they care for each other, yes, but I don't think they like each other that way. It's obvious that the reason Jamie did not want Zoe to go with them was because she was not Victoria, and that, in a way, he subconsciously resented Zoe for that, but he got over that and the two of them became very close.
However, I see their relationship more like a "brother and sister" kind of thing. I love their bickering, and I love it when he's all protective of her (Two/Jamie/Zoe being my favourite Team TARDIS) but I don't think they harbour any romantic feelings for each other.

Two/Jamie
The OTP to rule all OTPs.
Actually, I ship Doctor/Jamie rather than just specifically Two/Jamie. It's clear that the Doctor never forgot him - in my personal canon, part of the reason why Three is so desperate to make the TARDIS work again is not just because of his desperation at not being able to roam around time and space, but because he wants to make sure Jamie will be safe and well, and he probably bored Liz and Jo half to death with comments about him; I also fully believe that the very first thing he did when the Time Lords lifted his exile was to grab Jamie and put him aboard the Annabelle, where he would be safe.
Anyway, Doctor/Jamie. What's not to love about them? It's not just that they're always touching, or the awesomeness of their "old married couple" bickering. There's something else as well - a kind of empathic/telepathic connection. Sometimes it's as is they're experiencing what the other is feeling or thinking the same thing. No matter how good (and how much I might ship) the Doctor with some of his other companions, I've never seen his connection with them showing such intensity and strength.
So yeah. Doctor/Jamie? They're pure ♥

THE BRIG/EVERYONE. Because: yes.

Also, I get Ingmar Bergman and Ingrid Bergman confused waaaaay more than I should. Fail.

Because he is a sexy bastard in a snappy uniform with a unshakable yet snarky temperament and a fierce mustache. Hell yeah.

Specific pairings, because I do go on:

Liz/Brig: O HAI SPEARHEAD FROM SPACE. That's basically my argument, right there. Watch their opening conversation with the sound off and marvel as you find yourself wondering when they're going to abandon pretense and shag on the desk. They're both sharp and sarcastic and love getting the better of each other - and Liz gives as good as she gets easily. There's this uneasy power dynamic between them, where the Brig's technically her commanding officer and doesn't shy away from exercising his authority as such, but there are definitely moments where she's in charge because she's the only one who knows what's going on (and my, does he snap to attention at times like that.) And while they don't always like each other (which makes all the UST even better), they're quick to rush to the other's aid when they're hurt or in danger (Hi, Silurians). They're a pairing that works both as an uneasy romance and as fierce, angry sex against the lab bench and I love them for it.

Sarah/Brig: Because Sarah's a big ol' flirt. :D Seriously, Robot? "Nonsense, Brig! You're a swinger!" Maybe that didn't mean in the Seventies what it means today, but still. Totally flirting with him. And in Terror of the Zygons too, checking out his kilt and all. (And he loves it. Just look at him grinning.) Also, she calls him "Brig", which I don't think anybody else does.

From a story standpoint, a relationship between them would be refreshingly easy, with none of the issues of command and subornation because she's not a member of UNIT. I'd imagine that'd have it's appeal. Granted, it'd still be complicated, since she's very much younger than him, but he can still be as solicitous as is acceptable for a gentleman and she can still smile and tease and ogle his kilt. She's vivacious and independent and doesn't take him entirely seriously most of the time, which means he can ease up a little around her. They'd be fun. Maybe a tiny bit angsty if you really wanted, but mostly fun.

Jo/Brig: Hmm. Now this one I haven't thought about as much, because I do tend to ship Jo more with Benton and Yates, but there's definitely potential to be had in the fact that the Brig hired her fully expecting her to be a vacuous test-tube-passer and she ended up as a competent member of UNIT who's done some awesome world-saving and such. It's not just the Doctor she proved herself to, nor just the Doctor she impressed. And now I want to write it because I really don't think there's any Brig/Jo out there. Gah.

The rest in the next comment, because you did say everyone. ;) Not really going to do everyone, though, as I'd be here all night making complicated theories for how to make Brig/Bret Vyon possible and I've got a lab report what's due in the morning.

Brig/Doctor: For starters, it's already canon that the Brig's the Doctor's best friend on Earth, and probably the only person who's met most of his regenerations. I mean, he's the form the TARDIS takes when it wants to make a few emphatic points about friendship! Even though it was possessed and evil at the time but shut up, logic has no place in my fangirling. They know each other; the Brig 'gets' the Doctor in a way not many other people do. He calls him on his shortcomings and freely disagrees with him, but would still give up his life for him if he thought that was the only option. He views him with both affection and frustration, and when I'm not busy shipping them like crazy I think of the Brig as having an almost paternal relationship with the Doctor - Two as the amiable, more playful young boy (whose presence, accompanied by the reveal of alien invasions, leads to the Brig becoming head of UNIT and taking on more responsibilities), Three as the rebellious adolescent slowly becoming an adult, Four as the grown son leaving home for the first time, Five and Seven as the son returning home to see the father again and show him the life they've led.

...and that makes shipping them sound squicky, yet somehow I feel no cognitive dissonance.

I find it easiest to ship Three/Brig, since Three's the Doctor who spends the most time around him, but also because their relationship is fraught with complications and power dynamics. There's a certain amount of give-and-take between them that they're both used to, and to a degree the Brig can just shrug off the Doctor's sarcasm and verbal barbs (or match them). But when he's given orders, the Doctor bristles under authority; when the Doctor oversteps a boundary, the Brig is quick to remind him of his limits. What's more, neither of them is clearly the superior in that power struggle; the Doctor might be the more intelligent, the more forceful personality, but there's always the unspoken but present fact that if the Brig turns him away the Doctor has nowhere else to go and no way of continuing to make repairs to his TARDIS, so he can't lash out too much. You'll forgive me if I can't help but see just a bit of sexual tension in the constant testing and reinforcing of power especially because the Doctor "testing his boundaries" might just come in the form of seducing the Brig and thus not only divesting him of the trappings of authority and placing himself in a position of power in relation to him but also just plain making the Brig uneasy and unsure, given the attitudes towards homosexuality in the military back then, not that I'm writing that fic or anything.

And even when they're at their most disagreeable they're so protective of each other - the Brig refers to the Doctor as "his personal responsibility" and goes against his superiors repeatedly in following the Doctor's advice. And the Doctor has more than once put himself in danger for the Brig's sake, and then there's "If you kill him I refuse to help you; you'll have to kill me too." at the end of The Silurians.

It doesn't hurt that they fall into one of my favorite partnership dynamics, that of the strange/odd/alien outsider and the everyday person who takes his weirdness in stride.

Oh my God I think I'm going to need a third comment box. WHAT HAVE I DONE.

Oh my, this is above and beyond the call of duty,,,!

See, I'm rubbish at explaining this sort of thing but I totally agree with all of these reasonings.

Especially that fourth paragraph in the second comment, that that Brig and the Doctor disagree fiercely but really do care for each other strongly. And then there's the last scene of "Inferno"... :D My RL friend who's a Who fan called it "an epic bromance" and I can't disagree!

The worst part? I'm not even finished. Life just got in the way of writing well-thought-out ship manifestos. This probably should not be what I do with my free time. D: (The troublesome thing is, I actually find just explaining these things much easier than writing fic. I can explain what I like about characters, what I see in them and their relationships, etc., but I fail a bit and making it sound pretty.)

I adore the last scene of Inferno; I still giggle every time I watch it. And the Doctor/Brig relationship really is one of my favorites in the entire show. It's complex and lasting and conflicted and interesting and there are so many surprising things you can read into it. And if Ten doesn't get to meet the Brig before he regenerates I shall cry.
