My new computer, it has Word on it. :D

Alas, it has Word 2007, of which I am not fond of the user interface (it is trying so very hard to ape the Mac user interface, which is great except that I'm one of the five people on the planet who actually doesn't like the Mac interface and prefers the Windows system, and I find Word 2007 to be user-unfriendly and frustrating), but WHO CARES. I have Word. I can write on my computer again, and since a computer isn't really yours until you write something on it it is now officially my computer.

That's all.

If you're really pining for the old Word interface, I can recommend OpenOffice.org.

Version 3.0 changed nothing from Word in a fundamental sense when it came to the user interface, and can interact very readily with Word 2007 docx files...

/but yay being able to write again!

Thanks for pointing me to OpenOffice - I'm going to see if I can tweak the user interface in Word itself, but if that comes to naught I'll give OpenOffice a look. Thank you!

I think there's an option-- perhaps in "properties" when you right-click on the desktop? to give EVERYTHING on the interface a Classic Windows look. I know that's what I did, five minutes after installing XP.

Not that I'm resistant to change, or anything. Nuh uh. I just didn't want everything so shiny. And round! What is up with it being round?

I am proud to say that I am another of those five people.

Yes, I took two seconds to check it. right-click on the desktop, and hit "properties." tab over to "appearance." There's a drop-down menu that includes "windows classic style." I'm pretty sure it'll work for Word as well-- if not, I'll poke around Word itself when I get back from work.

Alas, my Properties window does not appear (lol) to have an "Appearance" tab. I'm not sure where it went, or if it was there at all, or if I'm just doing it wrong (I right-clicked and ht "Properties", but the pop-up window that followed showed me nothing by way of "Appearance" tabs.)

Thank you for pointing that out to me, though. And I don't particularly hate change myself - it's the shininess that gets to me, too. It's just...everything feels like it's glowing, and there are so many tabs that do nothing to tell you what's actually on them, and...just...gah. *grump*

It's so good to actually know some of the five people. I feel less alone. :D

aww. Yay for new computer! does it have a name?

i hated word 2007 at first. really. like really really. especially that stupid round button in the top. but what i hated most about it was working in our lovely educational institution's computer center and holding seminars to teach high school german teachers how to use it, holding my own professors' hands through it, and spending time with fellow classmates on tutorials.

and then i got a mac and had office 2004. it was terrible. especially entourage. i wanted the new shiny stuff, but 08 for mac wasn't yet available for students.

then again, every day i was in berlin i wished i'd brought my old pc instead. maybe that was more a pc/mac thing than an old office/new office thing.

if you really wanted the old word/office, you could ask my people at work for a downgrade and i'm pretty sure they'd provide it for you- office suite is free to faculty, staff, and students, and quite a few weren't satisfied with the upgrade.

docx files are teeny tiny, if that's any consolation.

I haven't named it yet - actually, I never named my old laptop, either. For some reason, I don't really name my electronics. My car, but not my electronics. Possibly because electronics have to be repaired or replaced more often, and if I name them then I get all attached to them, and I get distressed and sentimental when I have to let them go.

I've heard that docx files are small, which is one reason why if at all possible I'd like to just change the interface rather than changing the program itself. But I'll keep the downgrade in mind; thanks for pointing it out to me!

Oh, Word 2007! How annoyed with it I was when the school computers installed it...but honestly, it took me all of about a fortnight to get used to it. It's not precisely as user-friendly as they think it is, but it isn't too bad.

And yes, I agree that a computer isn't really *yours* until you write something on it, so hooray for that!

I have to use it way more often than I'd like to on school computers, but, frustratingly, not quite enough to get used to it and figure out where all my favorite functions are. I'm sure actually using it (assuming there's no way to change the interface) will acclimate me to it soon enough.

Thank you!

I thought I was the only person who hated Word 2007 with a m-f'ing passion!!!!!

Congrats on the new computer, though. :)

Oh good it's not just me. :D But then, I'm used to being the only PC-lover in a roomful of Mac disciples, so I was sure I was the only one who didn't think copying Mac's every move was a good idea.

Thank you!

My dell came with Microsoft Works; Word Processor doesn't cut, I need the whole Microsoft Office with Word like I made my dad shipped the disk to me, so I can install it.

I have Word 2003, I haven't used Work 2007, what it is like? My dad has the disk somewhere..

PS. I also can't stand Mac, I feel bad being quite found of the iPods, except for the fact they die too soon :/

I've got the whole Office suite myself, I just haven't used anything except Word yet. So far, Excell 2007 angered me just as much at school, but we'll have to see how much use I make of it.

Word 2007 is very shiny, and very round, and very much trying to look like it belongs on a Mac. All the features and tools are on tabs instead of in menus, and it's not always very obvious what tabs contain which features so you end up soing a lot of clicking around and rummaging for what whould be simple tools. I'm not fond. :(

And you're not alone in liking iPods while not being fond of Mac computers. I like the way Macs are designed, but their user interface is just too slick and shiny for me. The iPod, on the other hand, is a rather brilliant little device.

No, it is a Whooo! For me, at least. I mean, yeah it's the weird, Mac-wannabe version of Word that'll take some getting used to unless I can tweak the user interface somehow, but still - I have a computer! And it has Word on it! \o/
