They didn't have to get you your alcohol of choice, but they chose to anyway. That must mean something. :)

One good way to improve your writing is to read- *really* read- writing you admire and try to emulate that particular style (which is how I ended up transferring from crappy fanfiction to actually acceptable original fiction. :P)

Probably does. And I got to meet my big sister on Friday, and she's really sweet. :) So, that's a good thing.

I try to do that, but I probably haven't been reading my source material with as much care as I should be (nor have I been mimicing it at slavishly). I shall practice that in the future. Thank you.

Oh, well, that happens too. Imitation does take some practice. When I first started trying to write original fiction based on imitation I thought I could pass as the next Margaret Atwood. Boy, was I wrong. :P

I know the feeling. For the longest time I was trying to be an F. Scott Fitzgerald clone. I ended up with florid, overly descriptive prose without Fitzgerald's gift for actually making it interesting, so...yeah. Unfortunate period.

Thankfully, I haven't gone through the phase that most authors seem to go through, where they try to imitate Hemingway. >__>

Oooooh, yeah. Simplicity works for Hemingway, people, but it doesn't work for you! *coughDAN BROWN!cough*

XD I think that was one of the first bits of advice in one of the many "how to write" books I've indulged in - just because a famous author can do something doesn't mean you can too. They cited Hemingway, Faulkner, Joyce, and Kerouac as examples, none of which, by the way, I would ever like to see imitated by someone who wasn't actually *them*
