Um, you know I'm not normally a big spoiler person - well, not for Doctor Who anyway - but I absolutely have to ask.

So, [livejournal.com profile] rhia_starsong and I were rewatching Hot Fuzz in lieu of being productive (as you do) and expressing our joy over Creepy Timothy Dalton. And I forget which one of us said it first (I think it was Sweet Bean), but we decided that Timothy Dalton needed to be the next Master. Opposite Nighy!Doctor, naturally.

Sweet Bean decided to go hunting for screencaps, so's we could make a "Master" icon of Dalton, and came across his Wikipeda page

You there? Good. Now scroll to the bottom, below "External Links".

Um, we may have screamed a little. One, because we so called it, and two because...well...Dalton!Master. Just saying the word makes me go all funny.

Of course, once I woke up in the morning and regained some sort of sense, I realized that it probably wasn't true, that someone on Wikipedia was just screwing with my head (as they do). After all, no mention is made of it on his actual page, and the Master's wiki page only goes up to Simm. Plus, he's listed as the Master for 2009, and so far as I know, Simm's coming back for 2009. Unless Simm!Master regenerates in one of the specials (unlikely, methinks), the earliest Dalton could step in would be 2010.

But...but...but I want this to happen, guys. Not that I'm in any hurry to get rid of Simm!Master, because hey, the interplay between him and Ten was what finally got me into Doctor Who period, let alone Old-School. But, when he does step down (and he'll have to, eventually; nature of the beast), Dalton would make an awesome Master.

I can't see him playing opposite Tennant, though. One of the reasons Dalton would be so good as the Master is that he recalls, I think, the sort of quiet, calculated charm that Delgado played. Which is all well and good, but Doctors and Masters have to be counterparts of one another, to a point. They have to be played in a complimentary fashion. Delgado!Master's suave deliberation worked with Pertwee's Doctor, but someone playing the same type of character opposite Tennant would look moribund by comparison. Simm!Master needed to be manic and wilder than his predecessors; otherwise he wouldn't have worked with his Doctor.

If Dalton did take the role, he'd have to be playing against a new Doctor - and seriously, I could imagine him playing opposite someone like Nighy. You'd need an older Doctor, one more measured, one...well, I hate to say it because it sounds fanwanky and I don't mean it to be, but one who's a touch more old-school.

That said, it would be very interesting seeing him play opposite Tennant, for the simple reason that I think it'd be the first time that the Master was actually substantially taller, bigger, and more physically imposing than the Doctor. In the past, the Master has either been smaller than the Doctor (Delgado and Pertwee, Ainley and Baker the First, Simm and Tennant) or about his size (Ainley and Davison or Baker the Second). Ainley was taller than McCoy, but I haven't seen Survival yet so I don't know if they play that up. But I'm pretty sure Dalton's taller than Tennant; even if he isn't, he's definitely broader-shouldered.

So. Um. What I'm trying to say is, any confirmation or absolute denial on this? I know it's unlikely, but now I'll be all sad when it doesn't happen.

I have a few more things to say, but I must run, since I'm sneaking this post in between classes.

Oh my god, I hope its not a Wiki wind-up!

Wow. That would indeed be ace. No idea if it's a load of cobblers (if it's Wiki that is eminently possible).

And you're right that the Master has generally been no bigger than the Doctor to all appearances. Even in the TV Movie we rarely see Roberts!Master actually up against Eight's Doctor for height comparison. (I've been forever wondering if Roberts is in fact shorter than McGann...)

Roberts (5'10'') is taller than McGann (5'8''). Photographic evidence.

You have no idea how much that picture made me giggle. Eight being all froofy and ravishable, and his two girlfriends bffs being all ridiculously American and totally prepared to ravish him the moment he blinks! This is the best conceived of publicity shot ever.

Ah! Indeed he is. Also, I don't know why that picture's so funny but it is. :D

I know it's probably not true, but...but wouldn't it be excellent if it was? I think it would.

Just judging from other stuff I've seen him in, Roberts is a pretty big guy, so it wouldn't surprise me if he was taller than McGann. But McGann isn't precisely short himself, so...I don't know.

Also, I suppose Two was shorter than the War Chief, if we're counting.

Oh, I really can already hear that smoothly creepy, yet oddly warm voice as the Master. Also, I just somehow see Dalton!Master as a touch saner than Simm!Master (not that this is hard to achieve).

But, yes.

Timothy Dalton for the Master!

Granted, there would have to be some explanation, I suppose, for why the Master wasn't ax crazy anymore. Although some of the Doctor's renegerations are saner than others; I suppose the Master wouldn't be any different.

::nodnod:: And certainly some of the Master's earlier regenerations were much saner in comparison to Simm!Master, so that leaves a bit of wiggle room.

That would be awesome. He's already played a Time Lord-- James Bond!

I agree about the Doctor and Master having to be two of a kind. Nighy!Doctor ftw. That's an interesting note about the sizes. Imdb tells me that Dalton (6'2'') is only one inch taller than Tennant (6'1'').

Wiki hijinks or not-- your bandwagon, I'm on it.

Really? Huh. He seems like he'd be taller. It must be the shoulders.

And Tennant's shlumpy posture. *nod nod*

Then again, I suppose I should have noticed something in those pictures I kept seeing of them out at a party together or something, but for some reason I always figured that was the perspective doing something funny. Or it just...never registered. Hmm.

I have nothing constructive to add, except: Old Skoolier Doctor/Master Doctor + Master fantasy casting for the win. I forgot how much I enjoy having people who share my stupid fannish interests on my friendslist. \o/

Old Skoolier Doctor/Master fantasy casting

Fixed it for you.

I have to admit; my LJ has become primarily about fandom, and I think I'm okay with that. I can let all my fannishness out here and pass as a reasonably normal person the rest of the day.

(Also ICON OMG.)

[livejournal.com profile] snowgrouse! It is here and it is one of millions and millions and millions; she and [livejournal.com profile] 45eugenia are quite prolific.

Fandom is kind of fun. When I did Harry Potter in high school I mostly just lurked, but I'm... sort of getting into it, with Who? My roommates, they totally do not care that I am all like "lol Time Lord makeouts" all the time, but nor are they particularly interested, when it comes down to it (though both of them have a healthy appreciation for NuWho). So fandom on LJ = of the win.

And are you a fan of my OTP? I was unaware! Mostly I hear affection for One through Three's companions coming through the tubes, which is cool, but not where my rabid interest is usually at.

I mean, except regarding Three, because he's a bamf. :)

I did see the manip (I, er, peek over at her journal on occasion, maybe), but I was unaware that it was available in icon form. Or possibly it just never occured to me to icon it. Whichever.

When I did Harry Potter in high school I mostly just lurked, but I'm... sort of getting into it, with Who?

Me too, funnily enough. I mean, I've certainly been in other fandoms, and I've been writing fic for years, but I don't think I've ever been as active in a fandom as I've been in Who. And I do have a few real life friends I've ensnared into Old-School Who fandom, so I can witter at them when I like, but it is nice to talk to lots and lots of people out here (relatively speaking) without having anyone look at me funny.

And are you a fan of my OTP?

But of course! Ten/Simm!Master and Master-related curiosity is what got me into Old-Skool in the first place, and Three/Delgado!Master is my Doctor/Master flavor of choice. I just don't talk about them as much, which is wrong and I should rectify that, obviously, but...I guess maybe I expected to love them, whereas the companion!love completely snuck up on me. (That, and how much I talk about a character is directly proportional to how much I write them, and while I've made multiple attempts I cannot write a convincing Delgado!Master, alas woe.) But yes, I am exceedingly fond of my snarky-yet-oddly-affectionate gay Time Lords.

Simm and Tennant made the "about his size" category? *snerk* David towers over John. Hell, most people tower over John.

A Dalton/Nighy match-up would look really cool. =D But then they'd have to hold new Master off for Twelve (I decided Nighy for Twelve because I'm coming to terms with the unlikelihood of Jesse Spencer as a choice), because damnit Robert Carlyle for Eleven. He's really short, too, so he'd really give Simm!Master someone to be about the size of. =D

posted by [identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com at 02:36am on 02/10/2008
Really? Dammit, they look the same size. All their publicity photos show them roughly the same size. Stop lying to me, Beeb! *goes to edit*

We do need a smallish Doctor, really, after this succession of tall people. XD And that has the added advantage of letting Simm stick around for another Doctor! It all works out beautifully.

I KNOW. Oh man, I wish. I imagine him with the trademark English accent, because I've seen a movie of his in which he's done one, but either way. I imagine him with a penchant for bolos and Chelsea boots, very forgetful, and resentful of his attractiveness because it makes him think people will take him less seriously.
