The idea is that you put up the firstlines lines or paragraphs, whichever makes more sense, from your most recent 25 20 (I'm lazy) drafts, be they completed fics or still incomplete, to see if you notice a pattern. I'm only using my one-shots for these, not multi-chaptered fic.
Conclusions? Um...I need to get out of the past-perfect tense a little more? And possibly stop using simple statements to start off stories? And I use too many words like "fortunately" and "naturally"? That's all I've got. *shrug*
And now to werk.
The idea is that you put up the first
1. Donna Noble had begun to accept that she was going to die. What was harder to accept was that she was not going to die in a car crash or a fire or anything ordinary like that. She was also not going to get killed by homicidal aliens in Father Christmas masks, nor was she going to die at the hands (claws? tentacles?) of the huge sodoff bird…insect…octopus…thing chasing her at the moment.
No, Donna Noble was going to die because she was in the passenger’s seat of a pinched dune buggy with a crazy old man who drove far, far too fast. – Doctor Who: Untitled Three/Donna fic; I’m not sure if I’ll end up using this line, though.
2. Films need viewers; stories need listeners; lives and deaths need witnesses.
And so the masked bandit and his daughter who was not his daughter rode off into the desert to seek out something other than revenge. But his daughter was younger, still young enough to be foolish, and she rode faster and further away until she forgot about him.
And the masked bandit wondered whether he should turn back. – The Fall: Untitled post-movie fic, which will probably never go anywhere.
3. Some things are worth forsaking a peaceful retirement for, even if it is your second or third attempt at such. The temporary decommissioning of the Valiant was one of them. – Doctor Who: Old Friends and Observers, a Lucy Saxon/Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart fic for
whoniverse1000 and
the_randomiser.
4. Naturally, she ended up back at the Inferno, more out of habit than anything else. And everyone greeted her as if nothing had happened at all. – Doctor Who: Untitled Ben/Polly kinkmeme piece that’s still too long dammit. Prompt was ‘semi-public’.
5. Dreams are, at their core, mental processing, the brain piecing through everything it has experienced, filing it away in the memory, and readying it for later use.
Naturally, for a mind as complicated as a Time Lord’s, and for a species with such long interims between sleep cycles, the processing itself can yield unexpected observations. – Doctor Who: Three/Jo kinkmeme thing that spiraled out of control and which I might post as its own thing if the damn thing ever ends.
6. True, humans had to make do with only one heart, no respiratory bypass, a terrible sensitivity to temperature, an immune system ill-prepared for anything unfamiliar, and the most rudimentary understanding of timespace travel and four-dimensional physics. But humans did have one advantage over Time Lords, and that was that they had vastly better sex. – Doctor Who: “Positive Feedback Loop”, another attempted Three/Jo kinkmeme thing that I finished about halfway before I realized I’d forgotten the prompt. Whoops!
7. Premise: There are many worlds, many universes, each one slightly different than the other.
(Seems a reasonable enough assumption, given that he’s fallen into one of them.) - Doctor Who: Concerning Multiverse Theory, Section Leader Shaw/Three. Or: my self-indulgence, let me show you it.
8. “I’m just saying, Doctor, you don’t have to look all rumpled all the time,” Polly said, digging her way through an endless line of coats. – Doctor Who: Looking Good is Serious Business, a.k.a. Two/Polly FTFW.
9. It was one of his last assignments, right before the end. In a suicidal effort the Daleks had snapped shut the last CVE, damning the universe to its long-overdue heat death. He had been sent to open it again, and in the process he’d ended up on the other side. – Doctor Who: than are dreamt of in your philosophy, a Nine/Adric fic with gratuitous Shakespeare.
10. “What is it that you say?”
Harry looked back, as one of the sleeping humans began to revive. “Beg your pardon?”
From across the room, Vira had paused her own work long enough to give him a blank look. “You precede certain statements with ‘I say’. Is that merely an indication that you are speaking, or is it meant to refer to the statement to follow?” – Doctor Who: "Primitives and Their Strange Linguistic Quirks", a Vira/Harry ficlet meant for
whoniverse1000.
11. “You realize this is entirely your own fault, Brigadier,” the Doctor protested, retrieving his jacket. - Doctor Who: You Really Should Have Specified, a Season 7 OT3 alien sex pollen fic. Sort of.
12. When he gets back to UNIT HQ from Llanfairfach, the first thing the Doctor does is take the TARDIS twenty years into the future – just to make sure. - Doctor Who: Staying, Three/Jo, post - The Green Death.
13. Vira grows up knowing that the Earth will one day burn. – Doctor Who: The Waiting-Room World, a ficlet series for the secondary cast of The Ark in Space.
14. There’s a knock on his door, and an inquisitive “Adric?”
He’s well aware that it’s the Doctor’s voice – it has to be, by process of elimination if nothing else. But he’s never really seen this other Doctor, except those few moments before –
Just before. – Doctor Who: Block Transfer Computations, a post - Castrovalva kind-of Five/Adric which I really should unflock, revise, and post proper one of these days.
15. It’d be tasteless to ask him out for drinks under the guise of celebrating his impending divorce, wouldn’t it? Probably would. – CSI: Another untitled, this one Warrick/Catherine, post-“A La Cart”.
16. She had beautiful lips. It was the first thing he’d noticed about her, and even when he worked with her it took a concentrated effort not to watch them as she spoke. And yet he ended up watching them anyway, half the time, watching the upward turn of her smile and the slight purse she gave her ‘o’s and ‘u’s. – CSI: Miami: As-yet-untitled Horatio/Yelina fic.
17. “Liz, we can talk about this.”
“No, we can’t, Lennie. You’ve had this coming since February.” – Law & Order: TOS: Never Forget, Never Forgive, a Liz Rogers-Lennie Briscoe drabble that I'm rather fond of.
18. The second sun would rise in the south, and the mountains would shine.
It sounded so beautiful when he described it, so impossibly beautiful – orange skies and silver trees and citadels reaching up, up, further up, towards the glass and the air beyond it. A flight of fancy drenched in color, too big and bright for a human imagination. – Doctor Who: Imagining, a Martha-centric post-"Gridlock" genfic I wrote for a Christmas present. First proper Doctor Who fic, too.
19. Marisol knew, in theory, that her significant other (the word boyfriend sounded so high-school) had to wear something other than business suits. At some point. In theory. But she was having a hard time actually believing it. – CSI: Miami: Jeans, another Horatio/Marisol
20_firstkisses challenge ficlet.
20. Marisol found the photograph tucked away behind another picture frame, just out of sight. – CSI: Miami: Her, a Horatio/Marisol fic I keep meaning to revise.
No, Donna Noble was going to die because she was in the passenger’s seat of a pinched dune buggy with a crazy old man who drove far, far too fast. – Doctor Who: Untitled Three/Donna fic; I’m not sure if I’ll end up using this line, though.

All kidding aside though, damn. Your stuff is so pretty, without being overwrought with "oh we must get eighty bizarre, crappy metaphors in by lunch and avoid actually having a plot at all costs" (ie., everything I've ever written). I heart yoooouuuuuuu.
(no subject)
That said,
Oh, but I like eight metaphors before lunch and no plot! XD I actually tend to find my own stuff too sparse; I envy people (like you) who can manage lush prose without seeming overwritten. Your own style deserves love aplenty, my dear. :D
I see you've done this meme as well, speaking of. Off I go...
(no subject)
No, no, no! Don't do it! You'll never see your family again! SAVE YOURSELF FROM THE EPIC LIFE-INHALING AWESOME THAT IS TWW! Actually, totally do it. I blew $200 buying the entire series after watching all of two episodes. XD
Seriously? Then we need to blend our writing brains (eeeewww, blended brains... bad vis.) because I always think mine end up getting so bloody wordy that even *I* can't remember what my point was, and I'm writing the damn thing! XD I envy that your writing has a point whereas mine runs around in circles for a while till it gets dizzy and falls over and/or pukes up an ending.
If you go out in the woods today, there's going to me memes to try!
Ooh, I like this meme. Is fun reading.

*is trying to write more New Who, really*
(no subject)
Any chance I'll get to see that fic you were writing for me? Sometime, maybe?
(no subject)
*facepalm* Gah, I am so fail. I keep forgetting about that, but I do owe it to you. So, um...while we're here, any changes to the request, or the same request as before?
(By the way, I've checked all your Fictionpress accounts, and I couldn't find much with Samaj and Amara in it, aside from the fics with all of your OCs in them, but I don't know if you meant for those to provide accurate characterization. Is there a fic of them I'm missing, or should I go by your OCBC profile as a guide?)
(no subject)
And you know, you're right. The only fictionpress story where they show up is Vertigo. Go by the OCBC profile-I've since added more information in the artist's comments section. I don't remember if that info covered this or not, but Amara mainly communicates by looks and hand signals. If she has extra energy/just feels like talking, she can generate audio illusions to make it seem like she's talking.
FYI: Samaj has black feathery wings just like Amara's, which he also normally keeps hidden under his cloak. His personality has not changed vastly from the good old days of Matrimony and Samaj's Birthday, if that helps. :P I actually have a profile for him, which I can e-mail to you if you need it.
Thanks!
