Why don't I have a "sleepy" icon? I should have one.
Saw the pilot episode of Firefly today, and, while I'm stubbornly resisting the prospect of yet another potential fandom, I quite enjoyed what I saw.
Other things:
- Exams approaching in three days. Ready? Of course not. Especially not for the Short Prose Fiction one, which I'm sure is going to be a three-hour-long kick to the metaphorical nadgers.
- Not that this has stopped me from doing some work on That Fanmix. I'll still have to beg a day or two off the mods, but would it be acceptable not to include cover art on said fanmix if I wrote a "fic set to music" instead? That is, if I wrote a little mini-ficlet to accompany each song? Or should I justlearn how to use GIMP chuck the fics and focus on the cover art?
- I'm becoming incapable of waking up in the morning, which is bad news for my exams. If anyone's taking them Tuesday and Wednesday, can I beg a phone call off you?
- I seem to be developing this thing for musicians in huge, overdone Goth gear (corsets, bell sleeves, heavy makeup, crazy hair) playing string instruments. First Rasputina, now Emilie Autumn. Where does it end, guys?
-Will respond to comments, entries et al tomorrow, when I'm not taking a study break. Good night to you all.

1. Book is rather excellent. Why doesn't anybody talk about him? He's a priest who knows kung fu and doesn't even flich when Jayne points an enormous gun at his face. Also, I'm kind of shipping Inara/Book based solely on the last scene of "Serenity", because I am a bad horrible wrong person. Theirloveissoconflictedomg.
2. Speaking of Jayne, I'm a tiny bit in love with him, trigger-happy foul-mouthed jackass that he is. "I don't see why we couldn't just shoot her first." Hee.
3. "Curse your sudden, yet inevitable, betrayal!" I have finally seen the dinosaur scene, and it was exactly as amazing as I thought it would be. My life feels somehow more complete.
3.a. I ADORE WASH. His being Alan Tudyk has something to do with that, but his worry and his sarcasm and how utterly in love he is with Zoe do as well.
4. I also adore Kaylee. I love the concept of Kaylee as a character - I love that the mechanic and engineer of the Serenity is sweet, cheerful, and girly. Normally, when you get a female character in a role typically associated with men - engineers, architects, soldiers, etc - they're played as very androgynous or masculine, consciously separating themselves from traits usually considered feminine. Kaylee is a complete subversion of that. Well, not a complete subversion, I suppose - she doesn't appear to have been formally trained, and she personifies the engines, but male engineer characters do the same thing. Anyway, I love it in concept.
5. Not that I don't love less-girly female characters - Zoe is tough and darkly humorous and wonderful. And she totally wears the pants in her marriage.
6. Shipping Inara/Kaylee? Me? Oh, perish the thoughteven though I so am.
7. I rather covet Inara's dress.
8. The entire Spaghetti-western-in-space flavor of the series is really intriguing me thus far. Not that it's never been done, as I'm sure it has, but the two genres blend so well together, and the occasional on-world scenes provide a lovely contrast to the spaceship scenes.
9. Reavers are referred to but never actually seen in the pilot. Someone has been reading How To Write An Actually Effective Horror Movie 101, methinks. Also, Joss Whedon gets many, many points for remembering that there's no sound in space.

Yay for having a real-life friend with whom to discuss, though, and yay for you enjoying Firefly!
Zoe and Wash are SUCH LOVE.

I'm sure there are plenty of websites which have it uploaded, if you haven't got your boxset back in the meanwhile...Having people around to discuss it with does help, especially when they're spoiler-sensitive about it. I haven't seen any more of it since, but Roommate-to-be does have a box set, so I'm sure I'll be all squeeful about it by the time next semester hits.
And Zoe and Wash are so terribly cute I almost can't stand it. I actually saw "Out of Gas" before I saw the pilot (long story) and it breaks my wee heart to see how much he wants to stay with her.

And the movie's good too. You actually get to see the Reavers in the movie.

Ooooh, I do hope they live up to the menace they create in the TV series.
