The Long Dark is over. My Bio project, she be finished.
I'm so glad I have that weight off my shoulders. I've still got big projects due these next few weeks, yes, but at least I don't have to do that anymore. Granted, it ended badly and I've probably just failed that Bio seminar, but I'm so damn sick of that project that I'm not even sure I care anymore.
But you all don't really want to hear me wangst about that, do you? I didn't think so.
I'm off to get some drawing done and work on my Creative Writing stories (my teacher *loved* that one that I posted here, which makes me happy). Maybe if I'm really lazy I'll go hunt around YouTube for some Third Doctor clips in my Designated Take a Break So I Don't Go Crazy and Kill People Time. In my meandering explorations of Classic Who I've developed a bizarre, inexplicable, and irrational love for Jon Pertwee's Third Doctor, and have been scouring YouTube for anything I can find (although I might be just desperate enough to ask my parents to get me the Inferno DVD for Christmas). What is it with me and British geezers, anyway?
A few thought on Thursday night TV coming up, once I'm done with all this other stuff. In the meanwhile, have a music meme, stolen from
rainbowstevie, to pass the time.
Here's the gig. Go to www.musicoutfitters.com. Type the year of your high school graduation [or first year, if still in high school] into the search function. Retrieve the Top 100 songs from that year. Strike through the songs you hate(d). Underline the songs you like(d). Bold the songs you love(d). Leave blank those you don't care about or don't remember. - This is another song that I was okay with until it got played to death on the radio and seemingly every commercial ever. That, and I will never ever ever ever forgive Natasha Bedingfield for using the “I feel so ADD” line in “These Words”. Way to perpetuate infuriating misconceptions and trivialize learning disabilities, you twit.
7. Crazy, Gnarls Barkley

1. Bad Day, Daniel Powter
-*grits teeth* I could stand this song when it first came out. Really. I didn’t like it, but it was okay. And then they started playing it every ten damn seconds on the radio. I could no longer stand to listen to it by the end of the summer, or whenever it was that song came out.
2. Temperature, Sean Paul
3. Promiscuous, Nelly Furtado Featuring Timbaland
4.You're Beautiful, James Blunt

-Now this, on the other hand – there are no words for how much I hate this song. I couldn’t stand it even the first time. It’s pitiful, it’s whiny, and I can. Not. STAND IT.
5. Hips Don't Lie, Shakira Featuring Wyclef Jean
5. Hips Don't Lie, Shakira Featuring Wyclef Jean
-Not my favorite Shakira song ever, but it’s fun, and there are very few Shakira songs that I actually dislike because I love listening to her voice.
6.Unwritten, Natasha Bedingfield
6.
7. Crazy, Gnarls Barkley
-I’m not sure why I like this song, but I do. I love the singer’s voice, I love the lyrics, but for some reason it’s the beat going on in the background that makes it for me. It’s simple, so it doesn’t overpower the song, but it compliments the very intense vocals. Oh, and the music video shows a morphing Rorschach blot, which means it’s awesome.
8. Ridin', Chamillionaire Featuring Krayzie Bone
9. Sexyback, Justin Timberlake
8. Ridin', Chamillionaire Featuring Krayzie Bone
9. Sexyback, Justin Timberlake
-Dammit. Dammit, I didn’t WANT to like this song. I wanted to hate it. Loathe it. It’s stupid and I should hate it. But I can’t hate it. I don’t like it. But I don’t hate it.
10. Check on It, Beyonce Featuring Slim Thug
11. Be without You, Mary J. Blige
12. Grillz, Nelly Featuring Paul Wall, Ali & Gipp

13.
14. Me & U, Cassie
15. Buttons, The Pussycat Dolls Featuring Snoop Dogg
-Let me just make it absolutely clear that I violently loathe the Pussycat Dolls and all they stand for. The mere fact that such a group exists - a group that isn’t even apologetic about its sex-object status – validates every hateful grudge I have against this sexist, male-dominated society, and frankly every time I hear “Don’t Cha” I have to refrain from castrating the nearest guy with a rusty spork. And yet I don’t hate this song. In fact, I may even like it. But I have never downloaded it, you understand, no matter how much I’ve wanted to. I will not give money to the embodiment of everything that is wrong with our culture and its gender roles. </ rage>

18. It's Goin' Down, Yung Joc
19. SOS, Rihanna
-Again, I don’t want to like this song, given that it shamelessly cops a synthesizer riff from some classic ‘80s New Wave without having anything at all to do with the song in question. But there’s a reason that riff got stolen – it’s awfully catchy and it makes me like the song in spite of myself.
20. I Write Sins not Tragedies, Panic! At The Disco
21. Move Along, The All-American Rejects

-This was my roommate’s ringtone my freshman year, which means I heard it about three times a day. For a song I didn’t like that much to begin with, that was not a good thing.
23. Dani California, Red Hot Chili Peppers
23. Dani California, Red Hot Chili Peppers
-Finally, some real rock & roll – increasingly hard to come by, nowadays. Don’t ever stop, Chili Peppers. We need you.

- My old classmate listened endlessly to this song – I was forced to listen to it day in and day out because it was on the radio all the time – people quoted it and wrote it on their Facebooks like it was the most meaningful fucking song to ever exist – and she had the nerve to tell me that my music is emo and sucks when I mentioned My Chemical Romance (which I’m not even that into – thank all that is good I never insisted on playing my really weird music around her). Hun, this song is about as emo and whingy as it GETS. I don’t care if you like it, but like it for what it is and get over yourself.
28. Unfaithful, Rihanna
29.Chasing Cars, Snow Patrol
30. Lips of an Angel, Hinder
31. Everytime We Touch, Cascada

29.
30. Lips of an Angel, Hinder
31. Everytime We Touch, Cascada
-For some reason, mindlessly fluffy dance music with big, pounding bass lines and a sugary female vocal get me every time. This song was just fun, and it got everybody on the dance floor, which means I inevitably looked less awkward when I danced to it. Thank you, Cascada.
32. Ain't no Other Man, Christina Aguilera
32. Ain't no Other Man, Christina Aguilera
-I’ve come to like Christina Aguilera much, much more than I did – I feel that she’s really matured as a singer even if she’s still singing pop music and toeing the cultural gender line. She’s got a powerful and distinctive voice, and hearing it in a song I actually like is quite a bonus.
33. Dance, Dance, Fall Out Boy
34. Gold Digger, Kanye West Featuring Jamie Foxx
35. Money Maker, Ludacris Featuring Pharrell
36. Ms. New Booty, Bubba Sparxxx Featuring Ying Yang Twins & Mr. ColliPark

37. (When You Gonna) Give it up to Me, Sean Paul Featuring Keyshia Cole
38. Photograph, Nickelback
39. Because of You, Kelly Clarkson
-Little slower than I usually like, but the song’s pretty and Kelly Clarkson’s got a decent voice. Only its frequency of radio play kept me from really liking it.
40.Stickwitu, The Pussycat Dolls
41. I'n N Luv (Wit a Stripper), T-Pain Featuring Mike Jones
42.My Humps, The Black Eyed Peas
43. Where'd You Go, Fort Minor Featuring Holly Brook
44. Yo (Excuse Me Miss), Chris Brown
45. Walk Away, Kelly Clarkson

42.
43. Where'd You Go, Fort Minor Featuring Holly Brook
44. Yo (Excuse Me Miss), Chris Brown
45. Walk Away, Kelly Clarkson
-Now this…this is Kelly Clarkson that I like much better. It’s a more energetic rock tune, but she doesn’t drag it into the shouting amelodic mess that some of her later rock songs became (“Never Again”, I am looking squarely at you).
46. Laffy Taffy, D4L
47. What you Know, T.I.
48. Dirty Little Secret, The All-American Rejects
49. Savin' Me, Nickelback
46. Laffy Taffy, D4L
47. What you Know, T.I.
48. Dirty Little Secret, The All-American Rejects
49. Savin' Me, Nickelback
-“How You Remind Me” and “Rock Star” will always be my favorite Nickelback songs, but this one works as well. I’m not a huge Nickelback fan, but I like the rough quality of the lead singer’s voice.
50. Don't Forget About Us, Mariah Carey
51. Sexy Love, Ne-Yo
52. U and Dat, E-40 Featuring T-Pain & Kandi Girl
53. Far Away, Nickelback
54.What's Left of Me, Nick Lachey

55. So What, Field Mob Featuring Ciara
56. Do it to It, Cherish Featuring Sean Paul Of The YoungBloodZ
57. Black Horse & the Cherry Tree, KT Tunstall
56. Do it to It, Cherish Featuring Sean Paul Of The YoungBloodZ
57. Black Horse & the Cherry Tree, KT Tunstall
- Not my favorite KT Tunstall song – that honor goes to “Suddenly I See” – but this is awfully catchy, and KT’s got a good voice.
58. There it Go! (The Whistle Song), Juelz Santana
59. Shoulder Lean!, Young Dro Featuring T.I.
60. Unpredictable, Jamie Foxx Featuring Ludacris
61. My Love, Justin Timberlake Featuring T.I.

61. My Love, Justin Timberlake Featuring T.I.
62. Shake That, Eminem Featuring Nate Dogg
63. Pullin' Me Back, Chingy Featuring Tyrese
64. Bossy, Kelis Featuring Too $hort
- I’ve never even heard this song, I didn’t even know it existed, but I just have to say: Oh my god. Just use a fucking letter “S” and get over yourself, whoever you are.
65. Chain Hang Low, Jibbs
66. Smack That, Akon Featuring Eminem
67. One Wish, Ray J
68. Sugar We're Goin' Down, Fall Out Boy
65. Chain Hang Low, Jibbs
66. Smack That, Akon Featuring Eminem
67. One Wish, Ray J
68. Sugar We're Goin' Down, Fall Out Boy
-Not really into Fall Out Boy, and honestly I don’t like most of their music. But this got stuck in my head for some reason. The chorus. It’s all the chorus’ fault.
69. Gimme That, Chris Brown Featuring Lil' Wayne
70. I Know You See It, Yung Joc Featuring Brandy 'Ms. B.' Hambrick
71. Who Says you can't Go Home, Bon Jovi
69. Gimme That, Chris Brown Featuring Lil' Wayne
70. I Know You See It, Yung Joc Featuring Brandy 'Ms. B.' Hambrick
71. Who Says you can't Go Home, Bon Jovi
- It’s Bon Jovi. I like it by default. :) Although, granted, I’m not liking the country-ish direction he was going in starting with this album, but I suppose it’s a little late for him to go back to the ‘80’s hair band aesthetic. Does it make me a bad person that I liked that better, though?
72. Too Little Too Late, JoJo
73. Touch It, Busta Rhymes
74. Rompe, Daddy Yankee
75. Deja Vu, Beyonce Featuring Jay-Z
76. Life is a Highway, Rascal Flatts

73. Touch It, Busta Rhymes
74. Rompe, Daddy Yankee
75. Deja Vu, Beyonce Featuring Jay-Z
76. Life is a Highway, Rascal Flatts
-Original was way better, but this cover wasn’t too bad.
77. Call me When You're Sober, Evanescence
77. Call me When You're Sober, Evanescence
-Yeah, yeah, I know. I listen to Evanescence, therefore I’m a wangsty wannabe-gawffic teenage tool. But I can’t help it. I like this song. It’s nice and angry, and I like Amy Lee. And I’ve never written Evanescence songfic and never will. So there.
78. Jesus, take the Wheel, Carrie Underwood
79. Show Stopper, Danity Kane
80. Get Up, Ciara Featuring Chamillionaire
81. We be Burnin', Sean Paul
82. Hate Me, Blue October
78. Jesus, take the Wheel, Carrie Underwood
79. Show Stopper, Danity Kane
80. Get Up, Ciara Featuring Chamillionaire
81. We be Burnin', Sean Paul
82. Hate Me, Blue October
-See, this is what I want to hear in a sad, emo-ish breakup/bad-relationship song. I don’t know who the lead singer is, but he manages to sound angry and heartbroken and even on the verge of tears without being melodramatic or boring. The song still has energy. There’s some interesting imagery in there too.
83. You and Me, Lifehouse
83. You and Me, Lifehouse
- By all accounts I should hate this song, but I don’t. On occasion, I like me my warm fuzzies.
84.Beep, The Pussycat Dolls Featuring will.i.am
85. I Think They Like Me, Dem Franchize Boyz Featuring Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat & Bow Wow
86. Say Goodbye, Chris Brown
87.Waiting on the World to Change, John Mayer

- On the other hand, here we have an artist I should like but I don’t. I’m sorry, but he’s done maybe two songs I like, and he sounds like he’s sleepwalking through all the rest, including this one. They’re nice songs, I’m sure, but they’re just…boring.
88. Soul Survivor, Young Jeezy Featuring Akon
89. Pump It, The Black Eyed Peas
88. Soul Survivor, Young Jeezy Featuring Akon
89. Pump It, The Black Eyed Peas
-I like this song mostly because it samples from Dick Dale and the Del-Tones’ “Misirlou”, and anything that uses that trumpet section has got points in its favor from the get-go. It’s also a fun, danceable song, and The Black-Eyed Peas are one of the few hip-hop groups that I even sort of like.
90. When I'm Gone, Eminem
91. Hung Up, Madonna
90. When I'm Gone, Eminem
91. Hung Up, Madonna
-Hurrah for shamelessly sampled ABBA music! (And no, I’m not required to dislike it, because Madonna actually had to seek permission from Bjorn Ulvaeus et al and prove to them that she was a hardcore ABBA fan before they let her have the sample.) Aside from my loving on the background music, I actually like this new dance-hall feeling that Madonna’s going for now. Yes, I know it’s nothing like “classic” Madonna, but in all honesty I’m not the world’s biggest fan of “Like A Virgin”-era Madonna, and I think it’s a testament to her abilities as a performer that she can change and adapt and still sound good after all this time.
92. Stay Fly, Three 6 Mafia Featuring Young Buck & Eightball & MJG
93. Love, Keyshia Cole
94. When You're Mad, Ne-Yo
95. Why You Wanna, T.I.
96. Stupid Girls, Pink
92. Stay Fly, Three 6 Mafia Featuring Young Buck & Eightball & MJG
93. Love, Keyshia Cole
94. When You're Mad, Ne-Yo
95. Why You Wanna, T.I.
96. Stupid Girls, Pink
- I adore you, Pink, for making this song. It’s a hate mail to the vacuous, appearance-based, misogynistic world of celebrity, and I LOVE IT. In fact, there was a brief period of time where I had an icon quoting the “Where, oh where, have the smart people gone?” line from this song. I cycled it out, though.
97. Feel Good Inc, Gorillaz
97. Feel Good Inc, Gorillaz
- I don’t understand what the singers are saying for most of this song, but I love the slow, strummed guitar of the chorus and the bass riff in the beginning.
98. I'm Sprung, T-Pain
99. Do I Make you Proud, Taylor Hicks
100.For you I Will (Confidence), Teddy Geiger
98. I'm Sprung, T-Pain
99. Do I Make you Proud, Taylor Hicks
100.
-And we end this list with yet more adolescent whining. How appropriate. Not to mention this song has always struck me as kind of creepy for some reason. I don’t know why.

As for the meme-- thanks for reminding me why I don't listen to the radio!

I'm pretty sure this was the year that I switched over to a classic rock radio station and never went back. Now I remember why.
*hijacks comment box*
*SO MUCH WORD on James Blunt. Except I feel the same way about "Crazy."
*I dislike "Unwritten" because it's a really great song, lyrically, with equally great music, but just when I start to wonder why I harbor such animosity toward it, the gospel choir bursts in. And you know how I feel about choirs.
*Sexyback is one of those songs that everyone is forced to admit they like (well, or at least don't actively despise), no matter how much it clashes with their usual tastes. I was done in as soon as So You Think You Can Dance set an entertaining routine to it.
*and frankly every time I hear “Don’t Cha” I have to refrain from castrating the nearest guy with a rusty spork.
I came dangerously close to spitting out my drink when I read that. Only extreme willpower allowed me to swallow before I burst out laughing at the mental image. "Now, was this an act of self defense?"
"THAT...SONG..."
*Dani California is amazing. I am not overly fond of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but this song owns my soul.
It has nothing at all to do with the fact that the only lyrics I could decipher at first were "sweet Louisiana" and "barrel of a hot metal .45," which made me think of Calleigh.* people quoted it and wrote it on their Facebooks like it was the most meaningful fucking song to ever exist
Because it IS, GAWD!
Honestly, though, they didn't play it on my radio station...I fell in love with it because of the Grey's Anatomy music video they set to it as their "preview of season 3." Said video was so lovely and well done that it actually pulled me back to the show after half a year of having sworn it off, so I have fond memories. Plus I'm generally a sucker for songs featuring piano.
*“How You Remind Me” and “Rock Star” will always be my favorite Nickelback songs, but this one works as well. I’m not a huge Nickelback fan, but I like the rough quality of the lead singer’s voice.
Yes. Exactly.
* SO MUCH WHINING. Just get a blog and shut up.
AHAHAHAHA YES!! I like Nick Lachey, but one of the girls I worked with dubbed this "The Ballad of the Wuss," and I cannot disagree.
*The strikethrough feature wouldn't be enough for me and "Jesus Take the Wheel." I need the internet equivalent of a heavy black marker to scribble a giant black cloud over it.
*I have a love/hate relationship with Pink and her music, but "Stupid Girls" is definitely on the love side; the commentary is excellent. I just wish I could find a version that doesn't have the spoken part in the middle...I've heard it, but not in any format I could obtain.

Re: *hijacks comment box*
See, I can see why you'd dislike it; it took me a while to warm up to it myself. I think the bass riff in the background did a lot for me. Well, that and the lyrics are about something other than "I has no girlfriend, woe!"
"Now, was this an act of self defense?"
"THAT...SONG..."
I think the law would be on my side here. No jury with an ounce of musical taste would convict me, anyway.
Plus I'm generally a sucker for songs featuring piano.
See, normally I am too - the fact that I came to so loathe this song is a testament, I think, to just how much I had to hear it. God, it was everywhere. I swear it got Twilight-Zone-ish by the end of the year.
Two additional comments:
- I had never even thought of connecting "Dani California" with Calleigh, but now that you mention it, I don't know how I missed that. Wow. I'll have to start paying more attention to the lyrics
and try to somehow force them to work for a songfic.- LOL @ "Ballad of the Wuss". That is an excellent name, and I shall refer to it by that name from now on.
