postcitywave on Tumblr tagged me for a 2018 Year In Review meme, and that seems like a great way to ease back into blogging before I start bringing out my actual personality.

Top 5 concerts & live theater shows you saw this year:

1. Rare Essence & Clutch. So much dancing! So much gogo! I WAS SO TIRED.

2. Burning Man art exhibit at Renwick, including a musical installation, a VR gallery, and a Temple of the Mind where visitors could write their memorials.

3. Lego Garden Art at a botanical gardens about an hour from my home. There was a lovely sculpture of an orb-weaver spider that I'll have to put up photos of.

4. More Legos, this time an exhibit of Nathan Sawaya's art. His pieces ranged from the imitative to the more abstract but it was always fun to get up close and see how the bricks that made them were put together.

5. Bruce Campbell at Last Fan Standing. Half quiz show, half standup, and I got a signed book out of it!

Top 5 TV Shows & Films you saw in 2018:

I didn't watch a ton of TV or movies this year, and what I did watch was mostly franchise or fannish stuff, so instead here are the video games I enjoyed the most this year!

1. Gorogoa - 2017
2. Darkest Dungeon - 2016
3. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle - 2017
4. Overcooked - 2017
5. Monster Prom - 2018

(On another note, Gorogoa is one of the most gorgeous games I've ever experienced and even if you don't play video games I unreservedly recommend it.)

Top 5 Albums of 2018:
(based on what I listened to this year, not when it was released)

1. Crypt of the Necrodancer -  Danny Baranowski (2015)
2. Total Depravity - The Veils (2017)
3. Friends on Mushrooms - Infected Mushroom (2015)
4. Psychic Warfare - Clutch (2015)
5. Nuclear Soul - Lionize (2017)

Top 5 Podcast Episodes of 2018:
Since I have a hard time listening to podcasts, here are some of my favorite Let's Play videos or vlogs that I watched this year! To mix it up these will all be 2018-released videos.

1. “Gulper Eel Balloons its Massive Jaws” - EV Nautilus. Which, incidentally, might be one of the first videos ever taken of a live gulper eel. Every time I watch EV Nautilus I wish I'd studied marine biology but then I remember I'd have had to go to grad school.
2. “Mysterious Swamp Creature Found!” - Brave Wilderness. I watched a lot of Brave Wilderness this year but I love this video for Coyote's excitement over this big gooey swamp salamander.
3. “Pottermore: Danny's Patronus” - Game Grumps. “Get to the point! How does it feel in your butt?”
4. “Multiplayer Mayhem: Wheel of Fortune” - Jesse Cox. Another playlist I've watched a lot of but listening to people guess at Wheel of Fortune phrases before they fill them in is funnier than it ought to be.
5. “If Food was an Anime and also a RPG: Food Fantasy” - Manlybadasshero. A sponsored playthrough of a mobile game interrupted by a quest for Lobster Boyfriend.

Five good/positive things that happened to you in 2018:

1. Helped my mom move out of our childhood house, which was a scary prospect even if I no longer lived there, and figured out that the new place could still feel like home very easily. With all the old furniture in place and the dog picking out his spot already it just feels like home's moved, not that it's gone.
2. Been more forgiving of myself, especially as regards my hobbies. I've gotten better about not beating myself up about not writing, which has ironically made writing a bit easier. Gotten better about not expecting perfection, too.
3. Cosplayed for the first time at MAGFest 2018! I only stayed in costume for one day because by that point the velcro tape holding my costume in place was starting to go, but I had a great time and learned a lot about what to do if I keep cosplaying in the future. And it gave me a lot more appreciation for other people's costumes!
4. Worked on being a communicative and honest partner with Boyfriend, especially regarding my needs, limitations, and anxieties and how I can support his.
5. Did all the phone-calling and finance-planning and sample-studying to get a new kitchen floor! On days when I don't feel like I'm a real or successful adult I can remember that one time that I Adulted super hard.

Now let's see how this formats on mobile, shall we.

Merry Christmas to you too! Hope you had a good one.

It was a busy year for me, and I didn't do a ton that was 'eventful', so it was nice to look back and see that a lot of good things happened, especially regarding my relationships and mental health.

The Lego sculptures sound so cool! And go you for doing so much advanced adulting this year. \o/

And thank you for tagging me! I really like the way you adapted the questions into ones you could answer interestingly. I'll definitely be doing a fair bit of that myself.

Both exhibits were very cool! I really will have to put up pictures. The Nathan Sawaya exhibit was especially neat because there were a lot of human figures and faces in it, and it's fascinating how they look kind of pixelated when they're made in Lego.

I was feeling slightly bad about myself reading this meme and realizing I'd gone to so few concerts and movies, like, wow I really hermitted myself this year. But the more I thought about it the more I realized I'd done plenty of other stuff! And besides, this was a busy year for me both at work and personally, so it's not a huge red flag that I wasn't as socially busy this year. Plus I never remember to check venues for concerts in the first place.

Have fun with the meme! I can't wait to see how you make it your own. :)

I love both Legos and cross-stitch for the way they're pixelly and physical at the same time!

It's great that this meme helped you take stock of all the awesome things you did, and not just regret what you didn't manage to fit in. Because it does sound to me like you did a lot of cool and impressive things!
