I think I really suck at games. I'm trying to play Shade, and I can't seem to do anything except wander from room to room generating sand.

I had trouble with it too, at first - Shade has a fairly specific text parser (it recognizes "enter kitchen" but not "go to kitchen"), and there's not a lot of detail provided. I got stuck a couple of times myself. Make sure you've interacted with everything that could be in the house, even if it doesn't specifically mention it - there are drawers and cabinets in the kitchen, you can turn on your speakers, that kind of thing - and reading the to-do list will usually give you a hint if you're stuck.

The Path is actually a bit easier just because it's almost completely non-goal-oriented. There's no real way to win, but there's no real way to fail either.

I ended up googling the solution because I got so frustrated. It's definitely an interesting premise/story, but not very newbie-friendly.

Yeah, thinking back on it it's not very intuitive if you haven't played a lot of text-based games before, and it's not really a good starting place to jump in.

Perhaps an atmospheric and shadowy flash game (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/541124) to make it up to you?

(Also, concerning your treat: I know Vetinari/Drumknott is your main Discworld pairing, but I haven't read too much Drumknott; how do you feel about Vetinari/Vimes?)
