Another quick break in between ENDLESS JOB APPLICATIONS OH MY GOD SOMEONE JUST HIRE ME. Also: Real Life post. One of these days.

So, lo these many years ago in 2008, [livejournal.com profile] settiai  had a really cool idea: Since Doctor Who has been running for a good 45 years and has dozens upon dozens of characters, why not try to write 1000 different combinations/pairings of those characters? And thus, [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000  was born!

And for a while it was pretty great - people wrote pairings that had no other fic and sometimes shouldn't have worked but did, and it was a lot of fun just seeing what people could come up with for these people distributed across space and time to interact with each other. But, around 240 fics (no mean feat) it kind of petered out. And I think that's a shame.

So, I have two ideas here, now that the really heavy holiday/ficathon season is out of the way:

1) Whoniverse 1000 revival ficathon! Gather up all the unclaimed pairings that people have posted thus far and have a fest where people claim, post, claim again, and so on and so forth. In addition to maybe getting a few more stories up there, writers have drifted in and out of Who fandom since [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000  went up, and there are probably at least a few people who would like it but don't know about it. Advertising!

Quick gauge of interest for a revival ficathon?

2) ...yeah, I kind of want to do a Transformers-verse 1000 fic comm. But I don't know if anyone would want to do it but me. Despite the huge blowups over Ten/Rose and Ten/Martha and whatever, I've found that there are pockets of TF fandom that can be even more divisive about shipping, and I don't want to end up in the middle of a giant wank parade. Of course, I tend not to run with the divisive shipping crowd (you guys are awesome that way, by the way), so I'm not sure how much of a problem it's going to end up being, but it's something to consider.

But, if I did want to do that, would anybody be interested?

This is in no way a plot to get people/myself to write some of the rare pairings I've been wanting to see. Really, fandoms, it's been a whole five months since the Ironhide miniseries ended and you've yet to produce amnesiac!Ironhide/guilt-ridden!Sunstreaker? While they're stuck on an abandoned Cybertron with complicated feelings and hang-ups all around? Y'all are lying down on the job I tell you.

If I knew anything about comics canon I'd mod a DC-verse and Marvel-verse 1000 challenge as well, because that seems the most likely out of all of them to make it to 1000. DEADPOOL/EVERYONE.

Oh, and one more announcement: [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon  posting is go! Up through the 14th of February, post some fics, art, mixes, meta, or generalized love for your favorite female characters in any fandom. It's a lot of fun and always produces some great fic and introductions to new series and canons, so go check it out and show some love.

You know, I never used to get headaches when I used the computer, but now I do. I have done my job-applying and being-a-productive-person for the day; now it is time to read books for my blog. Or bead. I could do that too.

I think the TF 1000 thing would be a fantastic idea!

I can't write, but I'd certainly draw for it! :D

::cracks up about the ironhide comic thing:: You are so fucking right XDDD

And in between all the different 'verses and timelines and everything, it wouldn't even be unrealistic to aim for 1000, really. I kind of want to just make the comm; actual interest can come along later. XD

It's just that you'd think that this would be a really obvious setup for shipfic and yet there is nothing at all! Or maybe I just ship Ironhide with everybody, idk.

There is plenty of obvious pairings in this franchise that make hardly a blip on the fandom radar, and others that take a little stretching of plot to make sense that are wildly popular. Not that any one ship is better than another, but it's really fascinating (and sometimes frustrating for a non-writer like me lol) that some seemingly obvious pairings just don't get "picked up" by fandom.

Bbbbbut, this is why we have the kink, meme, no?

Your comm will also help with that!

With the amount of characters, there is most likely more than 100 pairings possible, so maybe set it up so that people can work together to make the pairing list? Like, each person suggests ten pairings? Or five? or something like that? and you put the list together from that?

I have noticed that - some of the really big pairings are the ones that aren't "supported" (not a good way of putting it, but I can't think of another term" by secondary canon or concern characters who don't appear very often, whereas pairings between two characters with a lot of onscreen interaction don't pick up as much. If it weren't weird and kind of creepy it'd be interesting to see if there were any prevailing trends as to what did and didn't become very prevalent and how those trends compared across fandoms.

The one downside I've found with the kinkmeme is that, while it does put ideas out there for rarer pairings, the majority of requests that actually get written are the same handful of pairings and kinks that show up in fandom anyway. Whereas with something like this, the specific goal is insane/interesting combinations, so maybe it'll get more variety out there. And it also gives people who aren't comfortable writing porn a chance at contributing to the variety.

I was thinking about running the 1000 comm the way [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000 was run - you'd write a short fic/post a drawing with any pairing in the comments to the main post, and at the end of the comment you'd request three pairings you wanted to see, with the restriction that they couldn't be pairings that had already been requested. Then, if someone wanted to write or draw one of your requested pairings, they'd post it as a reply to your comment. There'll be a prompt donation post if there was something you wanted to see but you couldn't/didn't want to write or draw, but I feel like that would encourage more participation and let you see immediately if someone had posted something you wanted.

I'd love to see [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000 come back to life! It's... been really dead lately.

I'm glad you're okay with the idea - I mean, I can talk, I haven't written anything for it lately, but I just adore the idea of it and I really want to see it get higher than the 200s. It does my multishipping heart good. :D

I'd love to see whoniverse1000 active again, the ficathon sounds like a great idea. It might even get me to try to write something again...

I would too - I feel like there are still so many combinations, even outside of the ones that have been requested. I kind of want to hold up until I've finished one of the fics I was writing so that I won't be slacking on my own ficathon, because it's not like I've done much writing lately either - I don't even have as good an excuse as you do. XD

Yes! I'd love to see a revivial, which would in no way be moar awesome in my head because it's an excuse to write River with classic Doctors.

Exactly! There are so many new characters that can be added to the pool of choices, which makes it all even better.

While it isn't generally my genre, I love the creativity it inspires to mix things up that way, hope it gets rolling again for you (went ahead and added a couple to the pile - Eight/Jo and Kamelion/vacuum cleaner just to do my part).

That's what I like most about the challenge - the fics don't have to be really shippy, but they encourage so much thought and creativity in how these disparate characters would meet and interact, and it really shows off just how diverse and huge the Whoniverse is. And while I am always approving of Doctor/Jo I have to say Kamelion/vacuum cleaner piques my curiosity. XD
