It's interesting watching The Rock and seeing just how many...distinctive Michael Bay touches I can find now that I've watched some of his later movies where he was given freer reign.

Example: Not every single shot is a tracking shot, just most of them. And action scenes are still over-edited to hell and frenetic to the point where you can't tell what's going on. Technology porn, lock-n-load montages, fireballs, gratuitous slow-mo, high-level government officials taking advice from an unqualified outsider, sassy black stereotypes, sassy gay stereotypes...the gang's all here, really.

Damn but I do love Ed Harris, though.

Oh, lord, why is there a minecart under Alcatraz. What is this...why is this evening happening. I don't understand this movie anymore.

No, actually, I changed my mind. This is in fact an improvement. Indeed I feel all of Michael Bay's movies could be improved by the addition of a gratuitous minecart chase, and I certainly expect to see a few in Transformers 3.

... I actually like The Rock a lot.

This is probably Sean Connery's and Ed Harris's fault.

Oh, I don't mean to say I hate it or anything - except for the mine cart thing, which just came so out of nowhere it knocked me out of the movie, I thought it was quite a lot of fun. And it's always nice watching Sean Connery, and Ed Harris is good in pretty much anything, and you know I even enjoy Nicolas Cage, though it's more residual love from stuff like Leaving Las Vegas and Raising Arizona. It's just...that damn mine cart. Why is it there. I need to know this.

I love that movie so much. It's hysterical. We bought the Criterion release, haha! Nic Cage is just so good in these terrible sorts of roles.

I actually have quite a lot of fondness for Nic Cage, mostly because I adore Raising Arizona and Leaving Las Vegas, but yeah, he just goes in and takes these really over-the-top roles completely seriously and it just makes it all better.

I would be just fine with the movie if it weren't for that freaking minecart. It just bothers me much more than it should. I can't figure out why it's there.

Ed Harris! Alcatraz! Basically ignoring the rest!

I just want to know why there is a mine underneath Alcatraz that's still holding up after all these years and I can basically be happy. That doesn't seem like so much to ask. :(

What's this you say? Michael Bay... being Michael Bay? :-)

Slightly less Michael Bay than usual, actually! There's only one shot of a helicopter against a sunrise this time, whereas in Armageddon I think there were, I don't know, five. XD
