Someone tell me why I thought it'd be a good idea to watch not one but two Asian horror movies at 11:00 p.m. while I'm alone in the house. One of which was by Takashi Miike. Yes, the guy behind Audition.

So, yeah, there go my plans of ever sleeping again. And I was all set to go to bed on time tonight, too. :(

I am greatly in need of something light and calming to settle my nerves before I sleep, if anyone has any suggestions.

Though, if you do happen to be into freaky shit, Fruit Chan's short "Dumplings" manages to be the most stomach-churning thing I've ever seen while using about one-twentieth the gore that most full-length movies use in their attempts at claiming that title. So...sort of a recommendation?

Also DAMMIT JAPAN what is it with you and aborted fetuses. Or fetuses in general. I'm noticing a pattern here and it's not one I like.

Although, actually Fruit Chan's from Hong Kong, so apparently this strange fetus motif is MULTINATIONAL. Oh my God WHY.

Also this is like the fifth day in a row where I've intended to write and have done something stupid instead (go on TV Tropes, watch horror movies, etc). I've got to stop this. In fairness, I did manage to be productive and get stuff washed today, but still. A colossal timewaster is me.

I should at least try sleeping, I guess.

WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO YOURSELF. D=

I DON'T FUCKING KNOW. I've been curious about these movies for such a long time, but I've always restrained myself from looking at them because I knew it'd freak me out and then I had a moment of weakness this happened. Stupid Asian horror movies. :(

AT LEAST DO IT IN THE SUNSHINE.

I have a secret to tell you.

...I'm not very smart.

I think I'm starting to calm down, though. Playing with the kitties helped. And the one 'good' thing about these particular movies is that it's just the imagery and scenarios that are scary - they're not paranoia-based movies, so I don't have that lingering dread of OMG OMG THIS COULD HAPPEN TO ME SOMEONE COULD COME INTO MY HOUSE.

Which probably isn't going to stop that awful hand-face-thing from appearing in my nightmares, but at least I'll be able to shut off the lights when I go to bed. Probably.

Kitties do seem like a good fear-combatting tool.

Until someone makes a horror movie ABOUT kitties.

OH NO. There would be no reason left to live if that happened.

Don't be silly. There's still chocolate.

Until there are horror movies about chocolate.

Just you wait. I'm sure there's already a movie in development about chocolate made from aborted fetuses.

I'm not sure how someone would manage that, but it's Japan; they'll find a way.

I don't know, for some reason that's so over-the-op it wraps around from being disturbing to hilarious. Like, new Nestle Wonderball! The surprise inside is BABIES. D:

I'm sure there are already several out there.

I will not go looking for them. :|

But what if it was a horror.... musical?

...that might be pretty cool, actually.

I'm imagining Cats crossed with Blood Feast or whatever that movie from the 70s about a Grand Guignol theater that killed people onstage was called, and it's just bizarre enough to work.

Though it helps that exploitation horror in that vein doesn't usually get to me quite as badly as squishy, crunchy J-horror, but maybe that's just because of the wodgy special effects.

And inside he has a parasitic twin cat head that tells him to kill.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

::snort::

and THEN does he abscond from the tribe and become a chocolatier? With more helpful advice from the parasitic twin? Espech w/r/t the ~~special ingredient?

That's actually the plot twist of Imprint. No exaggeration. And the "twin" is a hand with a face inside it. It doesn't sound like it should be scary but it's a damn freaky-looking special effect.

And then he befriends an animal-control person across the street who brings in stray cats and they come to an ~arrangement. Might as well get some Sweeney Todd in there.

They can protect me from scary things! Even though they're about a fifth the size of the scary things in question. Whatever.

Which Miike movie? I looooooooooove him and have seen most of what he's put out. If you want something rather hilariously gross with musical numbers in it, watch The Happiness of the Katakuris. Seriously. MUSICAL NUMBERS.

Imprint (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imprint_%28Masters_of_Horror_episode%29), his episode on the Masters of Horror collection. I also watched part of his Three Extremes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three..._Extremes) short, "The Box". Those were actually my first Miike films, and while I think Imprint suffered from the actors having to speak English (and the guy playing Christopher blew a couple of his reactions) I couldn't get over just how beautifully they were both shot. So much of the fear and the atmosphere in both of them came just from the camera work.

I had no idea that movie existed and now I have to find it just so I can see a Miike movie with musical numbers. It's what I never knew I wanted. :D

Oooh! I haven't seen those! Definitely going on my queue. He's probably my favorite horror director and I love me some horror movies. If I may, I'd also recommend Gozu. It's utterly surreal. But not anywhere near as sick and surreal as Visitor Q which might be his best movie of all. Good lord does that one stay with you. Not because it's gory or anything, but because of the subject matter. It's twisted as hell.

All three of the shorts in Three Extremes are very, very good - I was particularly fond of Dumplings (for a given value of fond), and it also contains a short from Chan-Wook Park, the director of Oldboy, which has a degree of surrealism and medium awareness. And, in particular, The Box has these almost wordless sequences that still convey such heightened feeling.

I looked up Visitor Q a while back (because even without seeing Miike's movies I've been fascinated by them), and wow, even after just reading the description it sticks in my mind. I just want to know how you think up stories like this, because really. I hadn't heard of Gozu, though, which...yeah. Same reaction, really.
