Especially since I know no one does these memes, but I just had to do it before it got all full up and forgotten.

the that's my favorite! meme
A FANFICTION PRAISE MEME

You know you want to massage my ego, right?

Also, I think it may finally be time to de-watch [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants  - not because of any particular incident, because I've sat through a lot of wank and fail on that comm and it still manages to be entertaining every so often. It's just getting kind of wearying reading it, and it's starting to make me paranoid and nitpicky about my own writing and I don't want to be that way anymore. Maybe that'll help me finally get something written.

Ugh, I am so tired. One day I will post when I'm not exhausted!
Mood:: 'tired' tired

I feel you about fanficrants. There are some good points raised on that comm, but sometimes they can get too nitpicky. I especially hate it when someone posts a good post, and about five people respond with something like: 'lol you misspelled treason.' Really. REALLY? Focus on the point of the post, please!

That, and almost every typo rant insists that even the tiniest flaw, be it a typo or a cultural point that isn't properly researched (like what people in Japan eat for breakfast), will throw them completely out of a fic, and it's just a very discouraging attitude to be around all the time.

Not to mention that when there is a more serious fail, like the most recent racism post, a discouraging number of members seem intent on not getting it, and any attempts at explanation end with "But that's not what I said! You're being mean!" It's not an environment I feel like expending any effort on anymore.

I'd never seen it, so I wandered over and looked through a bit of the comm out of curiosity. Definitely not my cup of tea, I generally find the dwelling on what's wrong to be a terrible drag into negativity, rather than constructive criticism that offers ideas on what could be right to balance things out... but hey, with a name like 'fanficrants' at least it lives up to its advertising. I wouldn't choose to keep something like this on watch, it's too much of a downer - maybe just use it for the occasional blowing off of steam as needed rather than having others' rants blasting through your flist on a regular basis.

The 'favorite' meme is such a nice idea! A breath of fresh air.

Really? FFR is a huge comm, complete with its own wank and trolls, so I figured it was a common enough thing to rant about it, but...yeah, while some of the rants are funny or informative, most of the time it's just tiresome and negative and makes me paranoid about my own writing because even some of the things I like to write about get complained about there.

At first I intended to keep it on as a way of figuring out what not to do, but really, if I followed that advice, I'd never write anything, so I may as well take it off watch.
