710 Verbal, 640 Quantitative. Have to wait to hear back from the testing center to get my Essay score, but still, not bad for a first try. And the essay section was pretty easy compared to the essays I had to write back in Collegeland.

So, yeah, not as scary as I thought. I should probably take it again after studying some more, but still.

So I figure I can probably take tomorrow after my pre-op appointment and finish my late [livejournal.com profile] springkink  fics, but I also completely struck out what I had of the first one, so now I'm back to square one. Hopefully this version will be more compact.

Nice!

I've always wondered: how much harder is the GRE than the SAT? I'm still not real clear on the format; from the surrounding vibe I always assumed it was knowledge-based questions like specific plot points in a Shakespeare play, but is it more like the SAT, just kicked up a notch in difficulty? Because if so then I'm baffled as to why it strikes terror into people's hearts.

Thank you! I'm glad I didn't do as badly as I thought I was going to do. :D

It's not as much harder than the SAT than I thought; it really is the SAT kicked up a couple of notches, and I assumed (like you did) that it would be much more detail-oriented and knowledge-based. That said, even the vocab section (which I'm normally pretty good at) was still pretty hard; the words they selected were things that I've never heard used, and the analogies were a lot more obscure. But it's the same type of thing, yeah.

Ah, cool. I don't know why the internet had such trouble giving me a straight answer to describe what it was. I can see where it would take some studying, then, but it seems like the kind of studying it'd be fun (or at least satisfying, particularly if you were not busy dying beneath homework in regular college courses) to apply yourself to.

Good score! You and I are quantitative score twins, and that is a kick-ass verbal rating. I thought about taking it again, but the score I got was enough to get me into the grad program I was eyeing, so no need. (Also, how about that $160 fee, eh?)

So, good job!

Thank you! I'm glad you got a similar score, since I have no idea what kind of scores people actually get on these things. If we got the same quantitative score, that can't be that bad, right? :D

Ugh, the fee is a big roadblock. If it wasn't $160, I'd probably take it again now that I'm familiar with the test and the sorts of questions that are on it, but do I really want to spend that much money for what might not be that great of a point increase?

A lot of it depends on what kind of grad program you're aiming for. There are resources out there that list average GRE scores for various majors, and some schools will outright tell you (on their websites or if you call them) what minimum scores they're looking for, so that's where I started when debating the "retake or not retake" question. Also, the GRE is but one tiny facet of yourself that any program will be considering when and if you decide to go for a Master's. Either way, your score is good for like, 5 years. :)
