So a while back I watched my Very First Ever Transformers Generation 1 episode, specifically The Search for Alpha Trion a.k.a The Only Episode With Girls In Until You Hit The 1986 Movie. I then typed up my thoughts on it and promptly forgot they were there. I really must label my documents more precisely.

- There’s a bit of genderfail in the only female leader leading an all-female troop (implying that a female leader couldn’t lead men) but I am so very enamored of Chromia, Firestar, and Moonracer that I don’t even care. They have distinct personalities! Even though I’ve only seen them for two minutes! And Firestar turns into a flatbed truck which for some reason makes me happy!

- Elita-One’s voice is sexy. Damn.

- I love how apparently, none of the Decepticons have ever seen a woman before. Yes, I know, the “female Autobots” could refer to the specific fighting team, but as it is, it just sounds like they spend half an episode wondering “hang on, we have girls?”.

- Oh, Eighties cartoons. I’m having fond memories of all the Thundercats and Voltron reruns of my youth, I am, animation errors and weirdly expository dialogue and all.

- I’m not sure I’m ever going to get used to G1!Megatron’s very high voice, because the two Megatrons I’m familiar with (movie and Animated) are both quite, quite bass and G1!Megs really isn’t. I don’t dislike the voice, it’s just…odd.

Also, hee. “Optimus Prime, something rather exciting has been discovered on Cybertron – our species actually has women! I know, I was surprised too.” Yes, I know why he’s really calling Prime, but I can’t get over the whole CHECK THIS OUT I FOUND WIMMENZ vibe.

- Hi Peter Cullen. Your voice is still at once soothing and authoritative and I am happy to be listening to it in its original context.

- I like Ironhide already and I have seen him for ten minutes. More of him and his three solid miles of Suthun Accent please. I am also fond of Inferno but Powerglide didn’t really talk enough for me to make a judgment call.

- Way to ditch your girlfriend, Prime. (Also, someone made an LJ icon of this scene in which Elita’s insistence that she accompany Prime is…much less polite. And somewhere the line “I was going to take you with me, but then you sort of exploded.” gets used. It made it moderately difficult to take the scene seriously.)

- G1!Starscream is so squeaky. I love it.

- Alpha Trion’s robot beard is a tiny bit hilarious.

- Elita-One kicks Decepticons in the FACE. HELL YEAH. I’m glad she is competent even if this was a girlfriend-rescue episode.

- …okay, you know that bit where Alpha Trion is trying to fix Elita and Prime is pacing around and leaning on the elevator and has his hand to his forehead? How big a dork does it make me if I actually went “awww”? Like, out loud?

There was no one else in the room, if that helps.

- Tee hee, “interfacing”. Hee hee hee…yeah, I’m twelve years old.

Except I’m not, because if you want the viewers not to think that “interfacing” = “robot sex”, possibly you shouldn’t have Prime leaning over Elita with a cable connecting them and making some rather suspect groans. And no, that is not my Freudian Brain on overdrive; that’s a freaking foreplay voice right there. Go check it and see if I’m wrong.

- I am not sure how I feel about all the female Autobots being somebody’s girlfriend, but technically they’re never referred to as girlfriends or any sort of romantic partner by anyone except Starscream, so I can just think of them as war buddies who give affectionate hugs (some people are just huggy people) and move on with my life. Besides, Chromia and Ironhide make a rather cute team (“Where are my manners?”)

- I want Prime and Elita to fistbump. I really don’t know why.

Mood:: 'blah' blah

Yeah, they've been on the planet as a guerrilla fighting group for millions of years... and yet Shockwaves's surprised to see them. *facepalm* Maybe he thought he'd managed to kill them all off or something.

One of the things that made me really like how the girls were introduced was that all of the ones with names are actively shown to be competent at some point or other. And, yeah, distinct personalities are just a bit of a bonus. :P

Gotta love how Starscream totally doesn't notice that Elita has somehow disappeared.

I actually kind of love that it's so easy to go either way with whether or not they're really the guys' girlfriends. When I want them to be, it works, and when I don't want them to be, it's incredibly easy to logic it away. And hey, they haven't seen each other in eons, it makes sense for them to be a little bit huggy! Also, their greetings are awesome. "Hi! It's been a while! 'Scuse me, got some Decepticons to shoot."

I think it was the use of the term "extinct" that got to me. Like they just died out naturally or something and now they didn't have girls anymore.

One of the things that made me really like how the girls were introduced was that all of the ones with names are actively shown to be competent at some point or other.

Yes! I loved that. They were good shots and escaped from the Decepticon base and got out of their own collapsed base and fought of Decepticons and each of them got a moment to shine. They got treated a lot better than I expected them to.

I actually kind of love that it's so easy to go either way with whether or not they're really the guys' girlfriends.

I loved this as well - I liked that they were affectionate and that they knew the other bots, and it made me a bit sad that we weren't going to see them anymore, because I would have loved to see them team up with the Autobots and have lots of combat banter and try to out-shoot each other. :D
