I think the best part of Christmas is that it allows me to eat lots of candy with very little guilt. Calories don't count until the 10th!

Anyway, Christmas went quite nicely. We managed to actually get to Church this year, even though we didn't get a seat, and because we went to hte family Mass, we got to witness the hilariously over-the-top Christmas pageant, complete with a model tower, an angel chorus, and an entire extra "true meaning of Christmas" skit because there were too many kids to take part in the actual Christmas story. After that we stopped by my cousins' house for dinner (and fried yucca, one of my favorite things in the whole world) and exchanging of presents, as well as my cousin and I getting into a debate about the status of hard SF in the modern era now that things like warp drives are more firmly in the realm of fantasy. (Has anyone here read The Reality Dysfunction and the series that follows it? My cousin recommended it as a thoughtful hard-SF piece with excellent world-building, but I wanted to gauge opinions here as well.)

After that I spent most of today in my pajamas, opening presents and loafing about. Christmas swag this year included:

- Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which I had heard all the squee about but hadn't yet read, and is an enjoyable enough pastiche so far. Also got Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, which I did not know existed and looks to feature a romantic-hero version of Davy Jones. I'm excited, not going to lie.
- A set of slippers, a scarf, and a blue knit flapper cap
- A skull-and-crossbones purse
- Chocolate!
- A mother-of-pearl necklace and earrings
- An Animated!Samurai!Prowl figurine, yes I asked for one stop your laughing
- MOAR CHOCOLATE

My uncle also brought some of his home collection of movies with him, so after reading the first third of PnPnP and cursing a bit while assembling Prowl (it took me far too long to decipher instructions intended for a five-year-old; fancy college degree right here, folks) we sat down to watch Drop Dead Gorgeous and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. The first was funny, and the second one was...well, I enjoyed it a lot, but the thing about Almodovar movies is that while I always find them compelling to watch I'm never sure how to feel at the end. This was the same way. Tomorrow we are either going to go to the movies or watch more movies, possibly Brazil because I keep meaning to see that. Oh, and do homework.

So...that's pretty much it for today. Oh, and I did finish the lineart for a drawing, which I'll post later. Hope those of you celebrating had a merry Christmas, and best wishes for the rest of the evening.

What a great haul! And I really must ask... what the heck does fried yucca taste like?

Fried yucca is basically a starchier, more substantial french fry. Plus the exterior is usually crispier than most fries. If there's a Cuban restaurant anywhere near you, they'll probably have it, and I am always trying to nudge more people towards Cuban food...*nudges*

Littlest Sister being in sixth grade now, the family was finally free from our obligation see her in your mass's pageant got to go to proper grown-up mass for the first time in six years. Littlest was unimpressed (Father Brian is not remotely impressive); the rest of us were just relieved. :)

We would have gone to a later grown-up Mass, but Relatives expected us at 6:30, so that wasn't an option. I don't know, it might have been worth it to see the rotating model tower and wonder how they were possibly going to top that next year. And also to see one of the angels hand off the Baby Jesus to Mary like a football and dash offstage. Oh, fifth-graders.

Fried yucca sounds tempting. I wish I could find some.

Has anyone here read The Reality Dysfunction and the series that follows it?

Alas, no. I keep meaning to read that writer (Peter F. Hamilton) and keep putting it off, with my typical sense of procrastination. *slaps self*

Look for Cuban restaurants! Other Caribbean places will sometimes have yucca, but Cuban restaurants are your best bet. They also have Cuban food in general, which is delicious and which not enough people appreciate. But yeah, friend yucca basically tastes like a thick, crispier french fry. Only better.

The fact that you keep meaning to read it is a good sign, though! I just wanted to make sure he wasn't involved in any major Fail or anything before I read his books.

Tell me how Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is. I think I'm just about the only woman in existence who didn't care for Pride and Prejudice, so I want to know if the addition of zombies makes it better. ;-)

I am...moderate of Pride and Prejudice. It was okay, but it wasn't my favorite book Evar; it wasn't even my favorite Austen novel (mostly because Mr. Darcy got on my nerves). There are few things that are not made better by the addition of zombies, though, and I am enjoying it thus far, so I'll let you know how it turns out.
