You know what would be great? If the explosive fragfiesta over the LJ TOS was over.

This has gone on way longer than it had to. Look, LJ-staff-people, if you don't want child porn on your servers, fine. You can do that. You're a private site and you get to define your own terms of service - regardless of U.S. laws. Just inform us that you won't be allowing it and be done with it. Don't hide your decision behind U.S. law while trying to paint yourselves as the oppressed defenders of free speech or whatever. Some people will disagree, and some people will leave, but you know what? No resolution to this was going to make everybody happy. The courts are still trying to work this out after over 50 years; you're not going to resolve it in three months.

Also, not posting changes to the Terms of Service on the front page and posting it at a time when many are avoiding LJ for fear of spoilers does not make you look good. Just saying.

This is not to say that I don't have some extremely sharp words for the fandom side of things, but I'll keep those mostly to myself. The one point I'd like to make is that I would like to never again see the argument that child porn explores a natural part of adolescence and growing up.

So sex between minors, who are not emotionally or sexually mature, is natural, is it. Know what else is natural? Allowing the weak, sick, old, disabled, and mentally ill to die so that only the strong can breed. Just because something's natural doesn't make it a good idea. Try again.

Also, there is, in fact, a middle ground between "sex is ungodly and evil" and "here's a condom, kids; go have fun", if you'd care to look. Not everyone who disagrees with you is a Bible-beating homophobe/eratophobe, and while free speech does mean that you can say and believe what you want, it also means that other people have the right to disagree with you.

Still not feeling the Potterdammerung energy, in spite of it being the day of the book's release. I just can't muster up the usual excitement about it this year. The media coverage, the omgspoilers! fiasco, the constant opining by book critics and mediafolk alike, the sheer volume of wank the Harry Potter fandom generates even among those not involved in it (like myself) - I think it's worn me down. I'm not staying up till midnight; I'm not going to read it all in one straight session (but I never did, so whatever). It was a fun adventure, and I'm sad that it's over. But...I'm excited, but not at the fever pitch I thought I would be.

I brought a cake in to work today, because my coworkers and I joked about it being "cake day" yesterday for motivational purposes. Except it turns out the company was already holding a surprise retirement party for one of it's members and there was cake down there. So I brought a cake and nobody ate it. And it's going to sit in the fridge till Monday. I fail.

I also signed up for [profile] 1sentence and claimed Michael from Burn Notice, Ye Series of the Four-Episode Canon. Clearly I have lost my mind.
