Three days left to default from Yuletide without penalty.

I can't decide if I want to or not. On the one hand, it'd be better for my sanity if I didn't have yet another task on my plate to add to the piles of stuff what's already there, and I've already managed two ficathons this year which is 100% better than my usual ficathon completion record, and besides then maybe I'll be able to eke out a few words of long-overdue WIPs. I might even be able to fill a few fannish stockings!

On the other hand...well, it's Yuletide, and I hate defaulting on things, and someone's going to be writing a fic for me so it doesn't seem fair to bail, and really I should have seen this coming anyway because has there ever been a December in Collegeland that isn't a month of sheer, radiant insanity? No. No, there has not.

Bleh.

Thoughts, flist?

If it's too much to handle, drop out. I mean, I get what you're saying and how hard it can be to back out on a promise, but sometimes you just have to, and I think people would much more appreciate it if you were honest up-front about whether you can do it or not over promising you will do it and then not, for whatever reason. No one's going to fault you for it. It's a hectic time now, and people are gonna get that.

I feel like now that I said I'd write something, I really should, but at the same time the part of me that has realistic expectations of myself is screaming "drop it now you stupid woman" so...I'm thinking better do it now than have to quit at the last minute and be banned from later Yuletide participation.

I think the main thing about Yuletide is to consider how rare the fandoms your recipient requested are. Did you match on something that's probably easy to find a pinch-hitter for, or is something else on the list easy? If not, I really feel there's an obligation to finish up something - it doesn't have to be your best work, just write something to the word count minimum that's short and sweet and maybe just a piece of fluff, and you're done. If it can be passed off, then you have more choice. I'd still recommend something short and sweet but it's obviously you who knows your schedule best - but honestly, while it's always fun to write the Best! Story! Ever!, for Yuletide people are pretty much just going "eee someone wrote in this fandom for me!!" so as long as you can spell and use paragraphs correctly, you will make someone's day with pretty much whatever you write, I can guarantee it.

The fandom I'm writing for had a fair few people request it, so I'm sure they'd be able to find a pinch-hitter if I did drop out, and yet, at the same time, what if they can't? There's that feeling of obligation you mentioned, like, if I don't write something for this fandom, who will?

I've decided to try doing it in freewritten bursts of an hour or so and see how that goes; if nothing else it'll serve as a study break, right?

Mebbe before the deadline, you can set aside an hour and go for it like you did with the Adric fic that everyone loves. Clearly that method has good results for you and with the time limit, it shouldn't interfere with your less enjoyable obligations such as (shudder) education. Give that a shot and, if it doesn't work, take the opportunity to withdraw without penalty and give them time to find a pinch-hitter.

This seems like a good idea, since I have some ideas for my fic but just haven't been organized or un-busy enough to put them to paper yet. I'll give it a try and see if I come up with anything. Maybe turning off the internal self-editor will be just what I need.
