Dear Yuletide Writer,
First off, thank you so much for writing a story for me! This is my first year at Yuletide, so I’m just happy to be participating and thrilled to have someone writing a fic for me.
My requests were mostly off the top of my head; please don’t feel obligated to follow them exactly, or at all if you don’t feel like you can. I’d be happy with anything in these fandoms, really!
Some general preferences: I’m okay with het, slash, femslash, and threesomes so far as relationships go, but I also love gen, especially adventures or something with a plot – my favorite kind of shipfic is the kind that weaves the characters’ relationship throughout a separate plot, or in between the scenes of an episode in the case of TV fandoms. Except for WALL-E (see below) I’m not fussed whether you choose to include sex scenes or not; don’t feel any pressure to include sex, but at the same time don’t feel like you have to write it out if it serves the story.
I love the exploration of gender roles, norms, and identification in fic; I love characters who don’t quite fit into the traditional male/female dichotomy, for whatever reason – trans characters, crossdressers, genderqueer characters, characters for whom our society’s concept of gender is unfamiliar and hence who don’t think of themselves as either male or female, anything like that. I realize this is of limited applicability to most of the fandoms I requested, but I just thought I’d put that out there.
I love happy endings. I can read and appreciate angst fic, and your fic certainly doesn’t have to be pure fluff or never have any conflict in it, but I really, really don’t like reading darkfic, and much prefer stories that end happily or at least ambiguously-mooded. More than anything I like stories that feel like a slice of the canon, even if they tackle subject matter that the original canon didn’t.
I would prefer not to read stories with graphic violence, rape or noncon, dubious consent, child abuse, pregnancy or mpreg, or extreme kinks (I’m okay with mild kink such as light bondage or D/s play, or drag, for example, but not bloodplay or master/slave relationships). I’d also prefer that you not bash any characters no matter what fandom you’re writing in.
All that said about my preferences, however, you’re still the writer and the story’s still up to you. Please don’t feel pressured to do anything – unless pressure helps, of course. :)
A few notes on my fandom-specific requests:
As You Like It (Orlando, Rosalind, Celia): I’d like Rosalind/Orlando or Rosalind/Celia, with Rosalind exploring her gender identity or presentation. I love it if Rosalind was genderqueer or third-gendered – sometimes she wants to present as a woman and sometimes she wants to present as a man – but she could also be trans, or cis but preferring to present as male. Whatever her gender identification, I’d love to see her and Orlando or Celia accepting it and working out their marriage or relationship. I’d love any fic about either pairing, but that’s what I’d really like to see.
Er. I just realized how specific this prompt is. I’d be happy with anything involving Rosalind/Orlando or Rosalind/Celia. What I love most about both pairings is the wit, wordplay, and jesting that goes on between them. I love the repartee between Rosalind and Celia, and the deep, affectionate friendship that it overlays; I love the way Rosalind verbally disarms Orlando, and I’d like to see him maybe learning to match her a bit now that he’s no longer pining for her (and she, in her guise as Ganymede, taught him not to idealize her). However, I’d also adore a story about Rosalind’s complex gender identity outside of either pairing, as the ambiguous way she thinks of herself is one of my favorite things about the play.
(Rosalind/Orlando/Celia is also nice if you can swing it; I can’t really see them in a stable poly relationship but I’d love to be convinced!)
As far as style, I’d actually prefer it if you didn’t try to imitate Shakespeare’s style too strictly or write in verse; I’ve seen it done well a couple of times, but I don’t feel like it works very often. An approximation of the speech style would be enough.
WALL-E (Any, Captain, AUTO, MO): I’d like fic about the Captain and AUTO, preferably pre-movie – just something about their daily lives and how the Captain interacted with AUTO before he thought it’d be possible to go back to Earth, as AUTO really was his only companion. Alternately, some post-movie fic involving MO and the robots and how they adapt to Earth would be nice. Nothing above a PG rating, please, and while shipfic is okay I’d rather not read anything graphic for this fandom.
...yeah, not much to add to this request. I really, really would prefer not to read anything graphic for WALL-E – even if I was an adult when this movie came out, Pixar is still kind of my childhood. That said, I don’t have a problem with PG/All-Ages shipfic, and there aren’t any ships here I dislike. I like WALL-E/EVE, of course, but Captain/AUTO is favorite, as I’m fascinated by how they might have interacted before WALL-E came aboard the Axiom. I’m interested in life how aboard the Axiom works in general, or on Earth after the Axiom lands and how humanity restores itself.
Horatio Hornblower (tv) (Hornblower, Pellew, Bush): Horatio/Pellew! I’m not terribly picky; I just want fic of the pairing that keeps them in character and doesn’t lose the semi-paternal and yet witty relationship between them, as I love the way Pellew’s status as a father figure complicates their relationship. Alternately, I know they’re not listed as characters, but some Orrock/Jack Hammond would be lovely, given the way Orrock tries to help Hammond when he forgets his signal flags.
While Horatio/Pellew would be my preference, Horatio/Bush would also be nice. And I didn’t see Orrock or Jack Hammond listed as characters, but if you know know enough about them to write shipfic about them, that’d also be wonderful. All I really ask is that you don’t bash Maria (if you write fic set after Duty and Loyalty, whether you choose to keep them married or not); their marriage isn’t great in canon, and I’m perfectly okay with that, but please don’t hate on her as a person.
Also, I’m not an expert at naval history by any means, so you can probably afford to fudge the research a bit. ;)
The Middleman (Wendy, the Middleman, Lacey, Tyler): Adventure fic in the vein of the show would be my preference – like a missing episode, even a short one, especially if Lacey, Noser, or Tyler help save the day. I’d love a fic that handled the three of them finding out about Wendy’s job, too. As a note, I haven’t seen the Comic-Con reading of the unfilmed final episode, so I’d rather not be spoiled for it yet or read fic set after it. Again, shipping is perfectly fine (I have a preference for Wendy/Tyler or Wendy/Lacey) but gen adventures would be wonderful!
I’ll try to watch the Comic-con final episode before the stories go up, so if you really can’t write a story without it, don’t worry. I’d just love more Middleman fic! Also, I listed characters I’d like to see, but feel free to include anyone else as it suits the story and/or you feel like – Ida, Noser, Pip, 1969!Middleman, Manservant Neville, whoever.
Thank you again, and I hope you have fun writing for Yuletide this year!
