Nicked from [livejournal.com profile] futuresoon :

The problem with LJ: We all think we are so close, but really we know nothing about one another. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.

In other news, I went to bed at 8 p.m. last night, directly after I showered. This left me with no dinner and an awful case of bed hair but I haven't felt this awake in weeks. Probably there is a lesson to be learned here.

Also I tried compiling a list for the "100 songs by female artists or bands fronted by women" meme a couple of days ago, only to discover, to my dismay, that I don't think I actually have 100 different ladies on my iTunes library. I hadn't realized until then that electronic music (which makes up a lot of my library) is such a man's game. Which is a shame, since the anonymity of the artist in electronic should make it a gender-neutral genre, but the only female electronic artist I can think of off the top of my head is Laurie Anderson. And Enigma, who only gets in there because they consistently use one or two female vocalists and some songs are co-produced by a woman (Enigma's music is written and produced primarily by a man). [ETA} And Goldfrapp! I forgot Goldfrapp, how very dare I. The band's named after the female lead singer, after all. Hmm.

Yeah, I think the only vaguely electronic other artists I know who are female or female-fronted are Dido (but only for one track) and Portishead (but again, are they electronica or just sampling?).

I haven't heard much Portishead ("Glory Box" is it, really), but sampled music usually falls under electronic, from what I can tell (Moby comes to mind).

Oddly, when there is a woman involved with an electronic group, she's almost always the singer; the bands that have mostly lyricless or only sampled/guest vocals are almost all men (whether that group has one or more people in it). Very strange.

*perks up* WHAT IS THIS MEME OF WHICH YOU SPEAK? I'm pretty sure I would have plenty of ladies, as evidenced by the fact that the first ten artists in my MP3 player are all female...

By the way, there's one quite lovely song (which I'm pretty sure qualifies as electronica) here, "Signatures," by a (female) friend of a friend on MySpace. Maybe you'd like it? Your post reminded me of its existence; I hadn't heard it in a couple years but it's still my favorite.

I saw it on someone else's journal when they did the 100 Fictional Ladies meme, and I thought I'd try to snag it only to find that I don't have that many ladies on my playlist, for shame.

I can't make it play. :( I'm not sure if it's an issue with my Flash player or because I don't have a MySpace, but now I'm all curious. Do you have any other means of accessing it?

"100 songs by female artists or bands fronted by women"

See, I can more than do the character list but holy crap, I really don't see that happening.

yeah, I went through my iTunes this morning and found out that not even a quarter of my 4000 songs are by women. I'm pretty embarrassed.

I can come up with 53! That's not too bad, right? Considering so many of the genres I like are such sausagefests...

Is the meme specifically focused on songs by them? Or a list of bands/artists themselves? The former seems slightly more possible; the wording of the thing is a bit confusing.

I'm not sure: I think it was phrased as "100 songs by female artists", so I guess I could use the same artist multiple times, but that seems like cheating.

It's a bit disappointing, since a lot of the types of music I like simply don't have a lot of women in them. There aren't a lot of women in music in general, really. :(

Okay, I have a fairly basic one: Whence comes your username? I mean, the muppet part is a given, but.

There's a rather involved story behind it: I was browsing through Wikipedia one afternoon and discovered that there was a Sesame Street/Muppets movie made some time back called Elmopalooza, in which Elmo and Jon Stewart put on a show - or tried to, because early on in their introduction they get locked in Prairie Dawn's dressing room and spend a good portion of the show in there. At one point, Richard Belzer wanders in and tries to break down the dressing room door to get them out, but finds he can't do it, so calls in Sparky, his "stunt Muppet", to do it for him. Sparky, as you might expect, flails around for a bit but doesn't accomplish much.

I'd been contemplating getting an LJ for a while by that point, but had backed out because I couldn't think of a name, and the concept of a stunt Muppet was so absurd and perfect that I had to use it as a name. The purple fellow in my default icon is Sparky, which is the reason I never change the default - it seems disrespectful to bump my namesake off the icon list.
