And other things, but that's the first item on my list.

1. I was freewriting a scene the other day, and I wound up describing a recently-regenerated Doctor's hands as "just beginning to callus". Reasoning: if the body only came into existence a few weeks ago, the skin wouldn't have had time to roughen in response to constant use.

I belatedly realized that this actually doesn't make sense, since freshly-regenerated Time Lords still have a full head of hair, full set of teeth, etc., and generally already come with a few facial creases and wrinkles that would take time to develop and wouldn't be there if their skin was truly "new". They come pre-worn, as it were, so the wear on their skin would be there right off the bat.

But I really like the sentence that description is in. Can I get away with it? Am I in fact thinking about this too much and no one else would even notice or care?

2. New Trek fic recs: Proving Today, by [livejournal.com profile] eldee , a Chekov-centric ensemble gen about Chekov slowly becoming part of Team Enterprise, and and you take me the way I am, by [livejournal.com profile] londondrowning , a genderswapped Kirk/McCoy with a girl!McCoy that still sounds perfectly in character. Check them out.

3. All the genderswap coming out of New Trek fandom makes me realize just what a dearth of it there is in Doctor Who fandom - I've read some nice girl!Doctor and girl!Master fic, but there isn't nearly as much of it. Yet another fic project I must embark on: those girl!Doctor fics I meant to write oh those many months ago. Now that Trek has made genderswap cool I feel slightly less self-serving writing them.

Though I admit my reasons for writing them are still fairly self-serving, namely "girl! One with Ben and Polly during The Smugglers would be cute in a weird way, and girl! One would remind Polly of a grumpy schoolmarm at first but eventually they would bond" and "girl!Three/Brigadier would be so ridiculously awkward and yet terribly sexy". Oh, and "Steven would feel all protective of girl! One and girl! One would not take very kindly to that at all".

3.a. I still want to do that drag ficathon. :( I kind of dropped it because I wouldn't be able to run it properly over the summer (and I probably still won't, given that I went and signed up for [livejournal.com profile] who_remix  because I've clearly gone mad), but most fandoms need more drag and Who is no exception.

A question, however: How does one refer to a crossdresser's appearance in relation to their gender? I know that transgendered people use FtM and MtF, but is their an equivalent term for transvestitism? Or do you just use "a female/male transvestite"?

4. Watched the season finale of Miami without even realizing it was the season finale. As such, wasn't sure what half of the plot threads were on about, but Family and I came to the conclusion that the Miami crime lab is actually staffed by undercover superhero clones. Horatio is Superman, and the reason he's been so permanently annoyed at everyone since Season 4 is that with all the glass walls in the new crime lab he has nowhere to change into his super suit. Calleigh is Wonder Woman because bullets bounce off of her. I don't know what Ryan is, maybe the Flash.

The reason this came up is because we concluded that Eric would survive the finale because he was secretly Aquaman, and would call upon the gators and tropical fish to come to his aid. Oh, of course he's going to live. It's Miami; everyone but Speed is deathproof, and I still think they should go check on Speed, just in case.

I kind of want to write a crackfic along these lines, to be honest. I shouldn't, but I do.

And that wraps up this somewhat bizarre entry. Ta for now.

1. Can you cut that bit and keep the rest of the sentence? Besides the reasons you give, I don't think the Doctor's hands are likely to be noticeably callused, since he doesn't do much manual labor.

3a. For someone who crossdresses but isn't transgendered, I would say "male transvestite"/"man in drag" or "female transvestite"/"woman in drag." With a preference for the latter, as the word "transvestite" strikes me as one of those clinical terms that tends to be used in a judgmental way, like "homosexual." But mileage may vary on that--Eddie Izzard calls himself a transvestite, for example.

I figured the Doctors who do more extensive TARDIS repairs (One, Three, maybe Eight and Nine) might have rougher skin on their fingers just from the toolwork, like clockmakers or modelmakers sometimes do, but I'll see what I can do about writing that part out.

Thanks for clarifying; I've heard "transvestite" used neutrally, but since it's a technical term I can see how people might use it to imply that crossdressing is a disease or mental problem.

I really like that description too. Maybe wrinkles are more a matter of his real age, or part of how his image forms itself, whereas details like how thick his skin is are more sensitive? It does make sense to me that his new body would need some time to get worn in, no matter how seasoned it looks.

Those girl! One examples in particular are XD

I feel like, if he's already aged, he would already have whatever calluses, freckles, marks, etc he's going to have, but since calluses develop in reaction to activity it didn't seem to make sense that they should already be there. Hmm.

Well, the fic that sentence is part of is nowhere near complete, so I have time to think about it.

The other intriguing thing is how you'd cast these fem!Doctors. For some reason female! One lands in my head as a combination of Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren and Joan Hickson circa "Miss Marple".

For some reason I always think of the girl!Doctors as illustrations - I don't associate actresses with them. That said, Helen Mirren sounds closest to the image I have in my head of her.

To totally butt in, I have to say that personally, Maggie Smith is exactly the kind of person I'd imagine girl! One to be. Aw, geez, now I really want that to happen somehow.

I'm glad you've signed up for [livejournal.com profile] who_remix. Now I know at least one good author is definitely on there :D

I figured if you took the plunge, I should too. :D Thank you!

I've missed your "bizarre" entries of late. Your brain works in the most surprising and entertainingly unusual ways sometimes! (That's a compliment, I swear.)

Why thank you. :D I'm glad they entertain someone besides me.

YOU DO NOT EVEN KNOW HOW HARD I AM LAUGHING AT THIS. Beverages were spat out of mouths, that sort of thing. This whole theory, in fact, culminating in Eric as Aquaman, is perhaps the most brilliant thing since Ms. Frizzle is a Time Lord. XD

and I still think they should go check on Speed, just in case.
Bwah! Exactly. "Figment of Eric's damaged imagination," my butt.

It took some time to reconcile Horatio's vigilantism with Superman's stance against killing people, buy hey, that's why he's a clone. There was some other Superman clone that turned evil and violent in some other comic somewhere that I can't be bothered to look up; there's totally precedent.

"Figment of Eric's damaged imagination," my butt.

I mean, he took one bullet to the chest. One. Eric and Ryan have practically had cartoon anvils dropped on them and they're both still walking. Speed was totally faking it, and after the sad and touching funeral someone (maybe Horatio) came back 'round after hours, dug him up, and sent him on his way. How he didn't suffocate in his coffin is a question I will figure out later.

...you know, I'd feel self-indulgent writing superhero crack, but a fic where Speed's been alive this whole time I might be able to get away with.
