2. The notion from some on both sides that all of fandom as we know it is on LJ anyway is...interestingly limited.
That kind of rhetoric gets bandied about every time there's some sort of major change to LJ, I find - Strikethrough, new content copyright rules, anything, it always triggers the inevitable handwringing and "But what will become of fandom? You can't do this to us!" cries. It'll find somewhere else, is what will become of it, in the unlikely event that LJ becomes so fandom-hostile that we actually have to go anywhere at all. There are lots of fan-networking sites out there and ways of setting up more.
I kind of wanted to walk into some of the discussions holding a couple of my dad's zines and shout "Look! Fandom! Before the internet! Really!"

It's like now that he doesn't have to be the responsible Grandpa for Susan, he can be the fun Grandpa for Vicki, the kind that buys the kiddies ice cream and lets them stay up late and watch bad TV.

3. That's just it--he gets all the fun and not the work and worry. You can see him enjoying being the indulgent grandpa.
