It is Saturday, and I have nothing to do save my homework (and why would I do a silly thing like that?), and there's nothing going on, and for some reason writing is Just. Not. Happening. And there's a lot of stuff I could be doing but the horrible lethargy of this week has still not shaken itself off despite my getting plenty of sleep this weekend, and I just don't want to do anything at all ever again.

Also, my head hurts.

And so, in lieu of doing something actually useful, I figured I'd put up a lazy-day picspam of some of the Three Doctors caps. Because why not.

Contains Patrick Troughton's expressive face, Gratuitous Benton, shippiness of various flavors, and tiny undignified squeaking noises. Also occasional transcription of the best bits of the commentary.

The Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart Raised Eyebrow of Skepticism and/or Suspicion (tm), making its first appearance of the serial. There are some points in Seasons 7 and 8 where I suspect the main cast could hold entire conversations using only their eyebrows.

"Benton! My scientist has gone missing. Go and fetch him. Chop chop."

I love this picture. I don't know why. I think it's the slightly annoyed look the Doctor's giving the photos. "Need more caffeine before I can deal with this, kthanx."

A bit of commentary here:

Katy Manning: People come up to me - it's lovely - and they say "Oh, I used to watch you, I was so scared, I was hiding behind the sofa," but the funny thing is, I can actually say that I watched...the early William Hartnell episodes, from behind the sofa, with my thumb firmly planted in my mouth, saying (assumes childlike voice) "Can I look yet? Is the scary bit over?"

Yes, I take screencaps of the Doctor and the Brig giving each other Looks. Shut up.

Nick Courtney, on his moustache:

"Talking of trivia and spinoffs, I've just noticed the right half of my false moustache, which looks about halfway up in the air. I had a series of moustaches, in my own stupidity - I should've grown my own from the start. Of course, if I had grown my own, I wouldn't have been able to do Inferno, one of my favorite stories, so that was all right. But I had this problem with moustaches, and everyone was jolly patient, because they used to come off...it's not so easy to act in false moustaches."

Yes! Hide behind a tree! Surely that'll protect you.

At around this point, Katy mentions "Jon and I had our one and only argument in three years in [Bessie]"; she relates the story a bit later, but I'll transcribe it here for organization:

"I was saying earlier that in three years, Jon and I only had one tiny little...disagreement, shall I say. Happened in Bessie under a large umbrella, and it was because I couldn't map-read very well, and I guess Jon was short-tempered that day, and he got very cross with me, and suddenly all you saw was things coming out of my handbag, thrown - hairbrushes and things...(laughs) Our one and only little disagreement in three years."

I think I like you, Ms. Manning. :D

Benton yay.

Official-type Benton!

I wish to state that everyone on the commentary track starts laughing when the gel guards come up, and Barry Letts says in something of a resigned tone, "I think these were some of the silliest monsters we ever had." Katy Manning calls their walk the "geisha girl bob". And mocks it.

Brig onna walkie-talkie!

Benton in the TARDIS, looking a bit confused.

Twoooooo. ♥

Naaaw, Benton is happy to see him too. After all, he's the nicer one.

Once Pat Troughton comes in, Katy Manning notes: "It was his son I fell in love with. Bit in real life, too, but I never got up the courage to tell him. And I found out later that he'd had a bit of a patch for me...shyness stood in the way of a wonderful romance. Yes."
Barry Letts: "It's not too late, you know."
Katy Manning: (laughs) "I don't think so now, dear."

Benton shows off his Sergeant's stripes to Two.

They are ever so cute and I love them both to bits. :D

More commentary:

Nick Courtney: Now, I'm going to tell you an anecdote, if I may...
Katy Manning : Uh oh.
Nick Courtney: ...about the first rehearsal. Pat and Jon were going to meet first day of rehearsal. And we all wondered - I remember Pat was sitting next to me and he was reading a book called "Transcendental Meditation", and I sat next to him reading my paper. And then eventually Pat came to join Jon in the scene - that was just it. We all wondered how they would get on. We were so nervous that I remember Katy Manning looked out of a window onto the car park...I raised my newspaper a little higher, to cover the whole face...and there were a few moments of tension, because Jon was very precise and wanted to know the cues...and Jon asked Pat "Well, what are you going to say?" and Pat was "I...well, I'll say what I'm going to say." But it didn't last very long, I must say, that little tetch. But I remember extremely well that atmosphere on anticipation as to how these two were going to get on. In the end they got on extremely well indeed.

I like this face. It kind of looks like she's telling him off for something.

There are a lot of single scenes where I have four or five seperate pictures of Two's face, because he's just so expressive that he can adopt four or five entirely different faces over the course of that short scene. Like he does here, really.

Of course I capped this bit for the Three/Benton touching. Shush.

Seriously, internet, some Three/Benton fic? I mean, some Benton fic period, but if some of that could be Three/Benton, that'd be just peachy keen.

Jo/Benton would also be acceptable.

It's not a very clear picture of One, but I include this shot because you can see everyone reflected in the monitor. Two is holding his lapels. I'm amused.

I'm equally amused by Two and Three's facial expressions throughout this conversation. The last one is my favorite, though. They both just look so sheepish about it. *skooshes them*

After that, everyone starts moving around a lot and it's hard to get good caps, so on to Episode 2.

Benton and Two, looking v. v. intense.

Looking very intense while hiding, because they are talented that way.

Speaking of expressions.

Commentary:

Katy Manning: We didn't have Richard Franklin in this, did we?
Barry Letts: No, I think Richard had asked to have some time off, so to speak, because he was eager to develop himself as a director. Indeed, I went to see one of the shows he directed at the Weber Douglas Drama School. Very good it was, too.
Nicholas Courtney: Weber Douglas? Well, you see, I went to Weber Douglas School and - who else went to Weber Douglas School?
Katy Manning (in a very high voice): I! I did! I went to Weber Douglas School! And you can tell by the art of acting that Nicholas and I have developed! (It sounds much funnier when she says it.) (laughs) And Terrance Stamp, too.
Nicholas Courtney: Oooh.
Katy Manning: Yeees. Only the best for us.

Later:

Katy: Look, your moustache is at a jaunty angle today. See, look!

I didn't take many pictures of the portions in the quarry, since the film quality isn't as good most of the time, but I had to take these few shots...

Eeeee. I love that she just grabs on to him for no real reason - it's not "omg you're not dead" or "omg we're not dead" but "omg we found the car." *smooshes them too*

I'm sorry, but I keep forgetting how cute they are and I feel the need to screencap it out of squee. I'm a boring hetshipper, so sue me. :(

At this point, it's getting late, so I'm probably not going to do too many more commentary transcriptions unless it's something really special. Mostly just pictures from here on out.

Benton tries to persuade Two that offensive action might be a good idea. Also, Benton has ankles. Just thought you should know.

But...but...but the Doctor's Doing Science! He's far too busy to go hold conferences and things!

But the Brig is not to be dissuaded.

Antimatter does not mess with Benton. Grr.

Four may be the one famous for the jelly babies, but Two offered them up first, yo. Recognize.

There's a "Yes, Brig, it is a big one" joke just waiting to be made here.

See, this is how you know the Doctor loves the Brig best - the Brig was the first one to get a superphone.

Of course, Katy Manning and Nick Courtney comment on how sketchy his pocket looks in this scene. And there's this bit of dialogue, regarding Omega's palace:

Katy Manning: Well, I think it looks lovely. It sparkles.
Nick Courtney: You would. Pantomime.
Katy Manning: Well, fine. Maybe I am. I like a bit of thigh-slapping, you know?
Nick Courtney: Ah, don't we all.

"Come now, Doctor. You can't say no to this face. You've tried. You can't do it."

The Doctor has it on very good authority that pretty girls will like you if you give them flowers.

Barry Letts: We're coming up to one of Jon's conjuring tricks. He was a very good sleight-of-hand merchant, and he would do conjuring tricks, like a magician in a show - you see (during the bit where the Doctor disappears a pencil and flourishes a bouquet of flowers from nowhere), you see, that wasn't a special effect, that was something he actually did.
Katy Manning: And I've still got those! Jon gave me those feather flowers. I've still got them tucked away somewhere. With my maggot.
Nick Courtney: Oh, you got a maggot as well?
Katy: Yep. Giant maggot and some flowers. It was worth all those years I worked for the Beeb.

Some more expressions, because Two, Benton, and the Brig have them:

Benton is taking the whole TARDIS thing quite well, considering.

A rather magnificent eyeroll, if I do say so myself.

Alas, nobody sees fit to explain to the Brig what's going on once One shows up.

Benton's baffled face makes me go "awww". Not going to lie about it.

And that's all for these episodes. More screencaps are here should you want to pinch them, and are free to a good home.

And now I should go do some work.

Gratuitous Benton is love. As is Jo's plush coat.

There are some points in Seasons 7 and 8 where I suspect the main cast could hold entire conversations using only their eyebrows.
Maybe the Doctor taught them the eyebrow language he mentions in Spearhead from Space.

Ooh, Pat read about meditation? Now I have yet another reason why I love him.

I mean, some Benton fic period
*coughfourteenthdoctorupcomingstoriescough*

*giggles* Like Cushing!Doctor, Benton is very skilled in the art of pointy finger.

I think Liz insisted so she could figure out what exactly he said to her in that episode. It helps to know these things.

It would make sense. That's a very Liz-y thing to do.

*claps excitedly*
You might be interested to know that the upcoming third Fourteenth Doctor adventure will feature Benton, the Brig, Harry, Victoria, Ben, Polly and Dodo. I'm also trying to squeeze Liz into it because someone wants Jamie and the Doctor to do them a favour, and of all the people from that particular timeline the Doctor knows Liz is the best person to help with that favour.

I need to write something for Benton, plus he seriously has the most gorgeous eyes, surely *someone* would've fallen for him somewhere.

Such a cute picspam! They are all so adorable.

Also! I'm probably going to wait until I have a bunch of them before I make a post, but I thought you might like to see what I've done so far with the lovely caps of yours that I've made off with:

You are quite mad and I love you for it. :D And I love how Three and Two are too SRS BSNS to notice Nekkid Benton and the Brig just keeps thinking there's something behind him...

Ahhhhahaha! We talked about trying to do one of these but I completely fail at animated icons, I can't tell you what joy there was seeing someone made it happen! XD

Thank you! And the commentary is precious - Katy Manning is just a touch mad, and she and Nick and Barry just bounce off each other in this wonderfully playful fashion. And they all love their leading men soooo much. :D

what a lovely picspam :) my favourite ever i think - especially the little runs of two!face. he is so good. i've never had it laid out for me in such a convenient format. and the brig's face is ALWAYS awesome, and the katy manning'n'nick courtney commentary sounds delightful. must steal that dvd back from its rightful owner and rewatch.

Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, I couldn't resist taking more caps than were strictly necessary of Two. He just makes so very many faces!

The commentary's amazing. It's got Barry Letts in addition to Nick Courtney and Katy Manning, and they just bounce off each other. And Katy Manning had/has a total crush on Jon Pertwee and doesn't bother hiding it. But then, I tend to like any commentary they're on, so I may not be an objective judge.
