All right, all right, this meme's been going around again, and while I usually don't do it simply because I can't pick twenty favorite movies and a lot of my favorite movies are embarrassing, you all know me and have forgiven me, I think. So the list is more "twenty movies I like and will watch repeatedly" than "twenty favorite movies ever".

Ahem.

Pick twenty of your favorite movies, find a quote from each one and post them here for everyone to guess. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie. No Googling or IMDb searches, that's cheating!

1. “Look, lady, I only speak two languages: English and Bad English.” The Fifth Element, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] brewsternorth

2. “I will eviscerate you in fiction. Every pimple, every character flaw. I was naked for a day; you will be naked for eternity.” - A Knight's Tale, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] primsong

3. “Well, I suppose if I had wanted a safe life, I wouldn't have married a man who studies rocks.”

4. “Okay, first of all, it's "cretin". If you're going to threaten me, do it properly.” - Monsters, Inc., guessed by [livejournal.com profile] brewsternorth

5. “Hey...you're a talker. What's a good word, a solid word for "need"?”
“Well, "need" is a good, solid word.”
“Nah. Too needy.”

6. “Although I've dedicated my life to God and His goodness, I secretly love throwing oranges at our priest.”

7. “When your mind becomes obsessed with anything, you will filter everything else out and find that thing everywhere.”

8. “Well, love is a gift, a lot of people don't remember that. So, you two better brace yourselves for a whole lotta ugly comin' at you from a neverending parade of stupid.” - Hairspray, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] primsong

9. “You're crazy!”
“ No. Spiteful, vindictive, *very large*, but never crazy.”
- Enchanted, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] carawj

10. “Come in. Come in, my child. We mustn't lurk in doorways. It's rude. One might question your upbringing.” - The Little Mermaid, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] charleygirl

11. “You wanna be a big cop in a small town? Fuck off up the model village.” - Hot Fuzz, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] airie_fairy and [livejournal.com profile] brewsternorth

12. “Nothing - wha - what do you mean nothing good? We've seen everything good. We've seen the whole city! We went to a museum, we saw priceless works of art! We ate pancreas!” - Ferris Bueller's Day Off, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] livii

13. “I was just remembering the last time we had a quiet drink together. I had a milkshake.” - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] kayliemalinza

14. “What is this thing? I mean, it serves no useful purpose for there to be a bunch of chompy, crushy things in the middle of a hallway. No, I mean we shouldn't have to do this, it makes no logical sense, why is it here?” - Galaxy Quest, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] pimpmytardis

15. “Alright, let's say that this boxcar is sixty feet long, OK?, and one third of it is across this switch here, alright... And now another train is coming... Now, how far do you have to move this boxcar so that the other train doesn't smash it? Quickly Brad, there are thousands of lives at stake...” - Close Encounters of the Third Kind, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] brewsternorth

16. “Do you ever have a normal day?”
“Yeah. Once. It was a Thursday.”

17. “Now in these last agonizing minutes of life you have left, let me answer the question you asked earlier more thoroughly. Right at this moment, the biggest "R" I feel is Regret. Regret that maybe the greatest warrior I have ever known, met her end at the hands of a bushwhackin, scrub, alky piece of shit like you. That woman deserved better.”

18. “Don't have sex, because you will get pregnant and die! Don't have sex in the missionary position, don't have sex standing up, just don't do it, OK, promise? OK, now everybody take some rubbers.” - Mean Girls, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] kennedycamelot

19. “You, slave, will be torn apart by horses, to the plaudits of the troops and the amusement of the children.”

20. “The truly extraordinary is not permitted in science and industry. Perhaps you'll find more luck in your field, where people are happy to be mystified.”

Hopefully these won't be too obvious.

I should do something useful with myself today, but I'm at something of a loss as to what.

No trouble! I tried to pick some not-so-obvious quotes, to make up for my lack of artsy and obscure movies. I'll reveal them all at the end!

Yay. I think I might know one, 'cause I just saw it on cable again recently, but I'm gonna wait for the reveal.

Which one did you guess?

The one from A Knight's Tale...are we correct?

You are! I've updated the journal with the movies that have been guessed so far.

11) That's gotta be Hot Fuzz. I truly wish I could think of the names for some of the others, because these are some great quotes.

posted by [identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com at 03:49am on 21/03/2009
Correct! And yeah, I tried to pick one of the lesser-known quotes for each, to make up for the obviousness of some of them.

I feel like I recognize a few, but can't remember the names, so it's working.

Number 2 is A Knight's Tale - woot! Chaucer is my favorite character in that one.

And 8 is Hairspray - again, one of the best lines, and I love anything with good dancing in it.

:-)

Correct and correct! I love the whole cast of A Knight's Tale, but I have a soft spot for Chaucer. Same for Hairspray, really, but replace Chaucer with Maybelle.

1 is "The Fifth Element"; argh, I recognize 4 but not where from; 11 is "Hot Fuzz"; and 15 is one of the more domestic bits from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", I think.

Ding ding ding! 15's right at the beginning of Close Encounters, if I remember correctly.

Holy smokes, I remembered 4 - Monsters, Inc.

/eta: of course I could be completely wrong.

#12 is Ferris Bueller's Day Off! I didn't actually remember the pancreas part, but the rest, yes.

I'm so pleased at myself for getting any of these. I have shit memory recall for quotes.

posted by [identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com at 04:21am on 21/03/2009
Correct! Funny thing is, until I looked it up, the "We ate pancreas!" bit was the only one I remembered. I guess it stuck out.

I chose some trickier quotes for what I thought would be obvious movies - and there were a couple I didn't remember until I looked them up. :D

THIRTEEN IS FROM INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE AND IT'S ON THE ZEPPELIN JUST AFTER INDIANA PRETENDED TO BE A TICKET TAKER AND THREW A NAZI OUT THE WINDOW AND OH, WHILE THEY'RE HAVING THEIR DRINKS, THEY NOTICED THE SHADOWS MOVING AND REALIZE THE ZEPPELIN HAS TURNED AROUND TO TAKE THEM BACK TO GERMANY SO THEY HAVE TO ESCAPE ON A WEE PLANE AND SOMEHOW SEAGULLS DIE.

DID I GET IT RIGHT?

INDEED YOU DID. :D

I ALMOST USED THE LINE THAT HENRY JONES USED AFTER SICCING THE SEAGULLS ON THE GERMAN PLANE, BUT I THOUGHT THAT WAS TOO OBSCURE. ALSO UPSETTING, BECAUSE SEAGULLS GET KILLED.

#10 is The Little Mermaid. :)

posted by [identity profile] jtree.livejournal.com at 10:11am on 21/03/2009
Oh! You got there just before me! The only one I recognized too. :)

BTW, in the same vein here's little bit of YT-weirdness that at least I found pretty amusing..
The Mermaid can leave her hat on, kinda.

...I am not sure how I feel about that video. XD I'm amused, but also just a touch weirded out, because no matter how long I'm in fandom it never occurs to me to make fanworks out of Disney movies.

The bizarre thing is, I can kind of see the logic behind the pairing now that I think about it.

posted by [identity profile] jtree.livejournal.com at 07:01pm on 21/03/2009
I do agree with you. At least for me it can be somewhat odd to see fannish creations from Disney because the animated Disney has never been a fandom per se. And that's also why it can be a little difficult to view these fanworks (and gods know there are plenty of them) as anything other than satire.
Perhaps it's the whole massive corporation lurking behind all of it-thing and the imbuing of stiffly conventional, shallow and watered-out values in worst cases, that are also to blame for that tendency.. Not that I would mean to disparage the sheer artistry present in any of it.
Have you seen the Fairy Use Tale, Beeb or BorderPatrolBull's snarky Pocahontas Review? All of them quite wonderful satire, in my eyes.

Woah. Sorry to ramble on.. :S

I haven't seen any of those, mostly because, as I said, I haven't gone looking. I read plenty of criticism and parody of Disney and the values its movies instill (one of the reasons The Little Mermaid is an embarrassing favorite is because I suspect enjoying it robs me of any feminist cred I may have amassed), but...I don't know.

Especially in the case of something more suggestive, there's the whole oh-god-my-childhood thing going on when I try to watch it. Because (unlike the rest of fandom, it seems) the Disney films, for me, arrived at a time when I was more or less oblivious to and/or disgusted by sex, and so any association between the two spheres feels wrong to me.

I'm sure there's a Disney fandom out there someplace, but I just...do not want to look for it. o__o

Thanks for linking to the videos, though!

Hey, there's nothing wrong with loving The Little Mermaid for all that is good in it, and I say that as someone who's had issues with it for the reasons you say since I first watched it at age three.

posted by [identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com at 08:01pm on 22/03/2009
I applaud you; I was too busy being terrified of Ursula to realize the genderfail inherent in the movie when I first saw it. I was four.

posted by [identity profile] jtree.livejournal.com at 07:09pm on 21/03/2009
BTW it also bugs me to no end that I can just almost remember hearing a few of these somewhere.. Grr.

19. is not Life of Brian, is it?

posted by [identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com at 11:24pm on 21/03/2009
Not Life of Brian, but you're close as far as the time period is concerned.

Oh wow. Clearly, The Little Mermaid is full of soft-core porn and I never realized it.

Actually, hang on. This was my favorite movie when I was little. I think I realized waaaaaay more than I should have at the age of 6. o.O
