But the thing is, whenever I get one of those "response" or "ask me questions" memes, I end up writing way too much. So I'm still not finished with the ones I've got!

Instead, have a much quicker meme, pinched from [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose , because I was in need of an LJ break:

When you see this, post a brief snippet of all your fannish works-in-progress.

It's, um, all Who-fic (slightly embarrassing though that is), so I'm not going to bother to post the fandoms.

1. "An Experiment, of Sorts (Chapter 2)" (Three/Liz): Second part of the Cliche Swap Ficathon fic. Only bits and pieces complete, since it looks like it's going to be substantially longer than Chapter 1.

“If all you’re going to do for a week is sit inside and feel sorry for yourself, then you can get right back in your box and stop using up all my sugar.”

---

2. "The Memory Always Lies (Chapter 2)" (Gen; Three, Liz, Brigadier, Benton): First draft finished; just needs to be beta'ed and tidied.

“You’ve been funny all day, Smith,” Morrow [said]. “Off in a whole ‘nother world.”

“I suppose I have been,” he replied, leaning back away from the telly. “But – have you ever known you know something, and just not remembered it? Like having a name on the tip of your tongue.”

“All the time. Forgot the wife’s name once. She never let me forget
that.”

John paused, searching for a more adequate phrase, because it wasn’t like forgetting a name, not really. With little things like that, you knew it would come back eventually – the loss was momentary. But this new memory had filled in a space he didn’t know was even there, and now that he’d explored it he’d found it full of cracks and holes.

---

3. "Kama" (Three/Delgado!Master): An attempt at writing something for the [livejournal.com profile] best_enemies Cliche Ficathon, using the slash cliche "christening the new vehicle/time machine/whatever". Only, er, twisting it somewhat, and instead building a fic around christening a new body, and from there trailing off into identity issues and the Doctor regaining a sense of self after the forced regeneration and blah blah et cetera. Only exists in snippets.

With unbearable precision he enervates him, weaving nerve to vein to muscle to skin and mapping out the nodes where he binds them all together. New flesh stirs with old need; dormant memory, curled away in unexplored neural pathways, seizes awake.

Of the two of them, the Master has always been the engineer.

---

4. "Nothing Lasts (But Nothing is Lost)" (Theta/Koschei, Two/War Chief!Master, Three/Delgado!Master, Four): a.k.a. big epic stupid fanwanky nonlinear Doctor/Master thing that I work on periodically. May eventually swallow up "Kama" and incorporate it into itself. Also only in snippets.

The first society the Master takes control of is an isolated village on a swampy, backwater planet that they crash-land in on their fourth off-world excursion, and his conquest is more out of boredom than anything else. The sub-planar drive of the TARDIS they made off with this time was damaged in the crash, and there’s nothing for it but to wait for it to reset itself and make disparaging remarks about how they’re going to get caught if the Doctor keeps putting holes in their joyrides.

The Doctor, in something of a state because he knows the Master’s right, marches off to explore on his own. The Master turns instead to the strange, vaguely amphibian inhabitants of this planet, and studies them with anthropological interest.

Within two of their weeks he has made himself their Messiah, started a new Golden Age (a few simple spare electronics and some pseudo-magical nonsense can make such an impression), and had the Doctor captured and very nearly sacrificed to him before the Doctor sullenly concedes that he has quite made his point, thank you.

---

5. "Nothing Up My Sleeve" (Gen; Three, Jo): Three, Jo, Harry Houdini, aliens, and clones. In 1912. Most of the time. Also only in snippets.

“You see,” he began as she set to work on the lock, “humans tend to assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it’s more like a...” he paused, punctuating the silence with increasingly vague gestures. “Well, it’s more like a sphere, is the only way I could put it.”

Jo stopped. “A sphere?” she asked, with a suspicious look back at him.

“Well, in a sense, yes. Timelines diverging, re-converging, folding back in on themselves, changing as other timelines affect
them – it isn’t as simple as past, present, and future. What you think of as the past and future are someone else’s present, and their present can’t be pinned down to a set sequence of events any more than yours can.”

“Mm-hmm,” she replied, not paying particular attention. It was going to be one of those lectures, she could tell, and it was best to just let him talk when he got like that.

---

6. Untitled (Gen; Four, Sarah, Harry) Four and Sarah and Harry versus Maschinenmensch Cyberman in 1927 Berlin. For [livejournal.com profile] dw_historical and wonderfully illustrated by [livejournal.com profile] pimpmytardis here.

“A masterpiece, really,” the Doctor narrated, slowing his pace to a stroll. “Practically the prototype for an entire genre, crown jewel of German Expressionism, proto-Socialist allegory… I always wanted to see the whole thing.” He looked back at Sarah and grinned. “Maybe even save a print or two; shame to lose something so marvelous to history.”

“I thought you weren’t supposed to take things from the past,” Sarah asked. “Paradoxes and all that.”

“Well,
normally no, but the film’s lost anyway. Nothing wrong with keeping a copy so long as I don’t try to put it back.”

---

7. "Ashes in Our Mouths" (Liz/Section Leader Shaw): For a prompt at [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000; about half-finished. Takes place a bit before "Army of Ghosts" and engages in wild fanonical speculation.

“Is this what I’d have looked like?” the other her smiles faintly up at her. “Not so bad.”

“I suppose that depends on who exactly you are,” Liz replies, more for certainty’s sake than anything else (as if certainty could be found in the illogical ramblings of a restless brain).

“I am Section Leader – ” But the other woman stops herself with a humorless laugh. For an instant, as her mouth opens, Liz can see the burns again, the cracking in her skin and the rawness beneath. “Elizabeth. I’m Elizabeth Shaw.”

---

8. Untitled (Rose/Jo, with appearances by Three and Ten): For an undisclosed [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, and possibly also for [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000 unless it's already been written by then. Rose and Jo meet at an intergalactic Tube station and try to catch up with each other from there. Also about half-done.

His eyes followed the train – or shuttle, she supposed – as it pulled away from the platform with a thrum of repulsors and a hollow swish. “It’s all they can do to maintain the place, I suppose. Nobody comes here because they want to be here,” he offered, by way of explanation.

She tugged on the edge of her jacket. Just because people didn’t want to be there, Jo thought, that didn’t mean they (whoever “they” happened to be; she’d seen no sign of anybody running the place, but she supposed someone had to be) couldn’t at least put forth an effort. A few more lights, maybe some new tiles on the platform that weren’t cracked and worn, and people might actually want to visit.

---

9. Untitled (Gen; Shalka!Nine, Robot!Master, Alison Cheney): For an undisclosed [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking who can probably figure out who they are anyway. ;) Alison, the Doctor, and the Master visit a German wine auction as Alison tries to persuade the Doctor of the merits of dessert wines. He's unimpressed.

“It’s not all that difficult,” he pronounced, unconvinced. “Tea should be sweet, and wine should be dry, and I can’t understand why it’s taking you lot so long to figure that out.” The Doctor sniffed disdainfully at the amber wine in his glass and passed it off to Alison without a second look.

---

10. "Outside the Scope of Your Duties" (Section Leader Shaw/Doctor Petra Williams): For [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000. Pre-ep for Inferno, obviously. Still only in snippets.

She has been unsure before, much as she’s convinced herself she hasn’t been. She is loyal to the state and obedient to her superiors but she could never muster the faith that the Party requires. She has never been able to silence the doubts.

---

11. Untitled (Doctor Who/Portal crossover, Zoe/GLaDOS): Cracked-out crossover, ostensibly for [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000 but mostly because I really want to write Zoe and GLaDOS trying to out-think each other. A goodly chunk of it exists, but I'm not sure if I'm keeping it since I have really no idea where I want it it go.

For a moment, the computer was silent; one spherical receptor swiveled to focus on her.

“Fine,” it said petulantly. “Be that way. I was going to let you into the databanks after the party. I was going to give you the
grand tour.” Its voice dropped, suddenly, becoming deep and distorted. “But if you’d rather just go blundering in on your own, that’s fine too.”

“Thank you,” she said firmly. “Now, query sequence: Herriot, Zoe; show all data; file body search –”

I wasn’t finished!” it snapped, and despite all her frustration Zoe couldn’t help but fall silent. “I was just going to warn you that I’ve got decades of files backed up. I remember everything. I have an infinite capacity for knowledge. If you perform a simple search, we’re all going to be here for a very...long...” Its speech slowed, warped again. “...time.”

---

12. "Grimwade's Syndrome" (Poul/D84 (from The Robots of Death)): Pre-ep for The Robots of Death, focusing on Poul's "robophobia" in a robot-dependant society and how he interacts with D84 on their shared mission. Can also be shunted over to [livejournal.com profile] whoniverse1000. Also in snippets.

He rationalizes it differently every time.

It’s the eyes, he thinks, the eyes that never blink and never close and might as well be empty.

It’s the smile that never quite reaches those eyes, that never changes even when they speak. A smile like the grin of a skull, with skin still on.

It’s the chill of their indestructible skin, and knowing that no matter how human they tried to make them look they could march through dust and fire and acid and whatever walls man might construct, emerging from every barrier as cold and perfect as ever they were.

He rationalizes – the faces are false, the smiles are false, they are only designed that way so that people will respond to them – but in their hollow bodies he still sees the armies of the waiting dead, and in their unblinking eyes whatever vicious intelligence lays beyond it.

He is fifteen when he has his first breakdown.

Um. Conclusion: I am terribly bad at finishing things. And I have too many ideas - there are lots of things I didn't include here because I only have a very basic idea or the little bit I've written is dubious or I'm not sure if I won't just start all over. Someone write things for me so I don't have to. :(

And now I suppose I should get a bit of actual work done or something.

Of course the terrible thing about this meme is it whets the appetite of the readers! Egads, I want you to finish those lovely looking Three and Jo bits, and that one with Harry in it... *pressure pressure pressure*

Heh. On the other hand I know what it's like - I've a handful of half-finished bits laying all over the place myself. :-P

I know the feeling - I'm a writer of ideas more than actual fics. Every so often I'll just sit bolt upright and go "oh my God! This has to be written right now!" and then I get two paragraphs in and never touch it again. Eh. *shy smile*

But I'm glad you enjoy the snippets! And Three and Jo are sort of my ficcish happy place, so there's no need to worry about those getting done. :D

So, uh, these all sound spectacular. Especially 9 and 10...! *flails a bit* &hearts You are far too awesome. :D

I meant it about illustrating the Houdini one. I think we share a brain sometimes, these all sound like things I'd love to read/create.

Oh, I'm glad you enjoyed them! And yeah, I've been kicking around Shalka!fic ever since I finished watching Scream, but it's a bit tricky getting the Doctor's voice down.

And I'd love to write/illustrate the Houdini fic with you, but it still doesn't have a complete plot, and I figure I should probably know what's going on before I start writing. I'd love discussing that with you, if you're okay with that...

(And eee, thank you! I'm so, so flattered that you want to illustrate something I write. :D)

I'm also more than a little thrilled there will be at last be Section Leader Shaw/Dr. Petra fic. Length matters not, it's simply that the great lack will be satisfied. Thanks for putting up with my obscure OTP of obscurity! :3

Hee, I've wanted to do something of the kind for more than a year. You have my e-mail if you wanted to discuss it, or I'm sometimes on AIM as elfcat4 (shush, I was 10 years old at the time).

Your obscure OTP of obscurity is awesome. It's not a question of putting up with it. :D

My AIM access is iffy at best, so sometime over the weekend I'll e-mail you with story notes and the like (I'll need an exam break, anyway. :D). Thank again!

Hope you don't mind me commenting, but I do like your fic. And when I saw [livejournal.com profile] primsong had taken this meme from you... I liked the sound of Four, Sarah, Harry - also any S7 extras would be great. The beginning of your Three/Liz story was excellent, so any more would be lovely.

Comment as you like! I've no objection at all to comments. :D I'm really glad you enjoyed the snippets. There's only one more chapter to go on the Three/Liz story (a long chapter, but a chapter nonetheless), so I should be able to finish that one.

Thanks for commenting, and your icon is so cute. :)

Thanks. I shall look forward to your fics, then!

And, not being clever with the icons, it is very sweet and is the work of [livejournal.com profile] ligia_elena.
