Er.
Okay, in fairness, there are certainly worse people who could direct New Trek than J. J. Abrams. And there are certainly worse actors they could get than the likes of Damon, Brody, McAvoy, Kim, and Sinise (who I just *know* I'll end up calling "Mac Taylor In Space"), although, as countless Hollywood blockbusters have shown us, all-star cast =/= good movie. In fact, all-star cast very frequently = horrible train wreck of a movie.
Also, I was never a so-called Trekkie (how I hate that term), and never really kept up with or became obsessed with the Trekverse, so I'm not really sure I'm qualified to whine about this.
But the thought of one more potential violation of the Trekverse, sure to be hyped and commercially exploited beyond any ad exec's wildest midnight fantasy, kind of makes me want to die inside.
One thing I am looking forward to, though, is informing my Dad about this. Dad's been into Star Trek since before I was born. I can just imagine the look on his face when I inform him that Mac Taylor will be exploring deep space and rescuing Stella from rock monsters Matt forkin' Damon might be playing Captain Kirk.
Oh, and I'm totally studying for my Bio test.

Sadly, having an all-male cast with Brad Pitt in there *still* wouldn't bring in the female demographic. The unwashed, unconverted female masses would still be all "Ew, Star Trek", because they just suck that way.
I poked through the news a bit more, and I found out that, apparently, James McAvoy wanted to make sure that Scotty had some sort of personality beyond just being Scottish. Fine and dandy, but are they trying to de-cheese old-school Trek? Does that mean no Shatner pauses? No shaking-interior-of-the-spaceship whatnot? No Prime Directive Bimbo Clause? No gratuitous uniform loss?
...what's the point?

I just died a little inside.

Although I can't say I'm not curious to see how Adrian Brody would play Spock. But curiousity does not equal approval.

I liked Star Wars only a slightly better mainly because of the Ewoks
I am more of a fantasy person.
