In the space of ten minutes, my computer went from "normally functional" to "smoking crater" "virus-ridden and unable to start".
I'm probably going to need to get the hard drive reformatted. I've saved most of my stuff onto an external hard drive, so I shouldn't lose too much, but I don't know what's going to happen to my laptop.
Fuck it, I didn't even download anything or open any strange attachments or anything, and I still get the Virusocalypse. Fuck it.

Lesson learned: download FireFox.

Thankfully, it wasn't as bad as I thought - the good folks at ResNet managed to clear it off without dumping my hard drive, but I do need to start clearing off space. And d/ling FireFox, because it's apparently a safer browser. Still, though, *whew*

The first thing I'm going to do when it starts up again is do another hard drive backup.

Still, though, the ResNet folks seem to have fixed it without dumping the hard drive, so...hopefully that sticks.

I got it back today, actually; apparently it wasn't as bad as it looked, and they managed to pry the virus out without needing to wipe my hard drive. At least, I think they did; I haven't gotten up the courage to turn my computer on again yet. Don't want to get my hopes up too high, you know?

Apparently, the virus wasn't as bad as it looked; the ResNet folks managed to get it off without reformatting my hard drive. It's also apparently been going around; one of my friends got the exact same bug about a week ago, and while I was in ResNet someone came in with the exact same virus on their computer.
Fail
Re: Fail
Yeah, consider me learned on the importance of backups. First thing I'm going to do once I get my compy back on is do another backup.
