So, yeah. The Great Mouse Detective? Still awesome. And even funnier now that I get the whole Holmesian pastiche on which it's based. I mean, I think I always knew that Basil and Dawson were analogues to Holmes and Watson, since I can't remember a time when I didn't know who Sherlock Holmes was, but before I was just aware of the vague idea. Watching it now, I see some of the specific references - the "Napoleon of Crime"? The obvious Final Problem parallels at the end? The Basil Rathbone sampling? It's glorious.

And really, it works quite well as a Holmes-esque story in its own right; Basil's as mercurial, intense, and completely socially disfunctional as his inspiration, within the bounds of a children's film. It does buy into the unfortunate stereotype of Watson/Dawson as an ineffectual bumbler, but I suppose that's only to be expected.

And oh, Vincent Price. You roll those R's, my good man. You roll them with gusto.

But really, why didn't this movie get its own Disney Channel spinoff series?* I would've watched that. I want Basil and Dawson to have lots and lots of adventures together and be brilliant and possibly parody/reference a different Holmes story every episode.**

*I don't care if there wasn't a Disney Channel at the time. The Little Mermaid got one; don't see why this shouldn't. *sulk*
**And sweet mercy, if it wasn't bad and wrong and childhood-killing, I would ship them. Sort of. In a totally PG-rated way. And maybe write fic, if that wasn't a fundamentally pointless thing to do given the homage nature of the movie.

I consider that a well-spent hour and a half, anyway.

I have this wonderful memory of that movie where I was babysitting and my little one kept playing it in disjointed bits from all over the movie on the DVD player multiple times until we'd pretty much seen the movie a good possibly three times, all out of order. And it was adorable. XD And that would've been a great Disney spinoff cartoon concept! I love the Disney spinoff cartoons, on occasion even more than the movies they were based on.

:D Aw. I suppose that's what comes of growing up in the DVD era - I remember having to rewind if I wanted to do that.

I think I only saw three of the spinoff cartoons - Alladin, The Little Mermaid, and Hercules, I think - but they were all qutie good. And the Hercules one still had James Woods doing Hades, IIRC, which made it all even more awesome.

Agreed, it should've been a series!

What's more, as a mystery it wouldn't be all fluffy bunnies but it would be intelligent. We need more "smart" kids' series, imo.

(It's been a long time since I saw it, but a writeup of it in a Holmes fan's guide to Holmes fandom quoted it as one of the "most successful thefts of Sherlock Holmes".)

No kidding. Detective was such a good movie because it took itself seriously - just because it was a kids' movie didn't mean they had to dumb anything down or "soften" anything. Which, frankly, a lot of childrens' movies could stand to learn.

Most underrated Disney animated film EVER. It's funny, beautifully animated, has great songs, SMART. It's fun watching it as an adult and picking up on the references you wouldn't have got before.

Thing is, it's only got two songs in it. But they're both awesome. And I'm still goggling a bit that "Let Me Be Good To You" got left in.

All I remember is Ratigan beating the shit out of him.

And the ballerina doll.

That scene at the end where Ratigan beats Basil up is scary, man. He totally goes feral. That movie was so hardcore.

I saw it for the second time I think just recently, and it's a great, very underrated little film. Is great fun spotting all the Holmesian references, and Dawson is adorable. :)

He is! He's so stuffy and proper and he gets so depressed when Olivia gets kidnapped. I rather like him as a Watson. :)
