You ever say or do or think something that makes you sit back, give a self-satisfied smile, and think "Damn, that was profound"?

I just did. And it feels really good.

So, my bio class had just finished, and I had atoms and molecules on the brain, and for some reason I got to thinking about quantum physics and membrane theory, about what it would be like to be able to measure the speed of change in the universe. Someone on the message board for my philosophy class had brought up membrane theory in our discussions about the Realists' conception of God, so thoughts of my philosophy class got mixed up in there too. Then, halfway to the ladies' room, this sentance just popped into my mind, with no apparent prompting;

"We may not be able to see it, but on an atomic level, the distance between an atoms outermost reaches and its nucleus is immense. Molecules are only loosely held together by electrical forces; there are still vast spaces between them. Every atom, every compound, every particle that makes up the universe is made of mostly empty space; we are comprised of millions of tiny emptinesses that we aren't even aware of.

Perhaps, then, we ourselves are the building blocks of atoms. Perhaps the vast distances between planets or stars or galaxies are merely the atomic vacancies of some great cosmic body."

No idea where that came from. But I like it.
