After yet another all-nighter in the Union - and finally, at last, turning in my completed Creative Writing assignments - I have decided that my first order of business is to sleep.

(Although I think it's worthy of note that, while I was trying to keep myself awake on that couch by the fireplace, I managed to turn myself into a Blue Oyster Cult fan in the space of about three hours. But I'm sure I'll post the obligatory "squee BOC is so cool!" post, and a Real Life Update, at some later point.)

I'll post the completed version of "1914" after I've gotten some sleep. But, for now, have the Year's Worth of Fic meme. It's a bit early, but I'm fairly certain I'm not going to get much more writing done this year. (Curse you, schoolwork. Curse you and all you stand for!)

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
I didn’t think I’d be writing fic at all this year. I thought I was done with fanfiction after my flirtation with gamefic, really. The fact that I wrote it at all came as a complete surprise.

Where did you publish/archive your stories?
Here on LJ and on fanfiction.net. I really don’t know of anywhere else, although I suppose I could haul over to svufiction if I really wanted to, An “A Fraction of Infinity” might go up on Teaspoon once it’s finished.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2007?
Well, I didn’t expect to be writing fic at all, really, so everything I wrote would be up here. But I especially didn’t expect to be writing Doctor Who fic, as I was vaguely into Doctor Who last year and the year before but didn’t start with the full-fledged fanaticism until a few months ago.

Also, I honestly had no idea that Horatio/Marisol was going to become the desperate crack addiction that it did. Really.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
Hmm…I might have to think about that a sec…

-I love “Little Brothers”. Passionately and unashamedly. I love working on it, I love meta-pondering it, I love thwacking the timeline into submission until we both collapse. Mostly, I love peeking inside Horatio and Raymond’s minds the way I do in LB. I love trying to write them in such a way that you can see who they’ll become.

-I am perhaps excessively fond of “Mind on the Job”, as I managed to write what I think is in-character romance while still keeping it fluffy, funny, and even a bit sexy. It’s my favorite H/M fic I’ve written so far.

-I am very, very proud of some of the imagery I thought up for “Imaginings”, which was the first chapter in the “Fraction of Infinity” ficlet collection. I’m intimidated by the Doctor Who universe like you wouldn’t believe, and the fact that I managed to produce anything worthwhile by way of Whofic just makes me happy.

-I’m also quite proud of “A Shape They Recognized”, mostly because I managed to write Mike Logan zomg. I’m almost as intimidated by the Law & Order-verse as I am by Doctor Who, so writing anything beyond a drabble for a character with that kind of history was a big accomplishment for me.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.
Currently, “She Sees Through Shadows” has the most hits, although I think that might just be because it’s one of maybe five Alexx fics on the Pit. “The Sixth-Date Rule” has the most reviews, the most favorites, and the most watchers, though, so I think that wins.

Story most underappreciated by the universe?
“I, You, He” still has no reviews and maybe 60-something hits, which is even less than my L&O drabbles that nobody reads. Come on, House-Pit. It’s 300-some words; it’s not like you’d have to put in a lot of effort or anything.

Story that could have been better?
I loved “Sleeping on the Couch” when I first posted it, but looking back now it seems unabashedly wangsty and a bit over-the-top. I’d go back and fix it, but people seem to like it the way it is (not to mention I’m a bit embarrassed to look at it).

Sexiest story?
Only two of my stories have even ventured into the wide world of sexx0rs – “Mind on the Job” and “Looking in Looking Away”. Of the two, “Looking In Looking Away” contains the most vaguely-written sex scene in existence (I’m not sure you could even tell there was sex in it if the narrating character didn’t, you know, tell you), whereas “Mind on the Job” features an actual, honest-to-goodness Nekkid Lady. So I think MITJ wins this round. ;)

Now, if I ever finish “Watch; Listen”, or even “Timeline”, I may be able to amend this. Come on, wannabe smut, get your bare ass in gear.

Most fun story?
“Mind on the Job” came to me all in one sitting, almost in its entirety, and I was smiling and giggling all throughout even though it was three in the damn morning. I loved writing it, and I wish I could write like that more often.

Story with single sweetest moment?
I’ve always had a warm place in my heart for Horatio and Marisol’s debate about the merits of vanilla versus otherwise-flavored ice cream. (That’d be “Vanilla”, in case it wasn’t obvious from the title.)

(How weird is it that I never write fluff at all – and barely write romance – except for H/M? Do I just channel all my warm fuzzy needs into them so they don’t leach out into my other fandoms? What is this?)

The story that made you cry?
You know, I don’t really cry when I’m writing my own stuff. Sometimes when I’m reading other people’s, but my own? Not so much. Though I may have shed a few tears of frustration over various chapters of “The Sixth-Date Rule”…

Hardest story to write?
As indicated above, “The Sixth-Date Rule” can swing from “indulging in smiley, innocent fluff” to “pulling teeth” in the space of a single sentence. I blame it on the fact that Horatio and Marisol have never had a non-angsty canon conversation, but I suspect it may have more to do with my own lack of understanding of what people do on dates than anything else.

Easiest story to write?
The 20 First Kisses ficlets – Mind on the Job, Vanilla, and Her, at the moment – all tend to be fairly easy to write (compared to, say, a tough chapter of Little Brothers). The ideas for the ficlets tend to come at me almost in their entirety, which means all that’s left for me to do is fine-tune some rough spots and voila. They’re not contributing anything of substance to the general Miami fanfic pool, but they’re just so much fun. :)

Most overdue story?
Chapter 3 of Sixth-Date, without a doubt. I think I last updated that in May. It needs to keep moving now. *kick*

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Writing at all – and posting it publicly – was a risk this year. But a few other notable risks:

- Writing Doctor Who fanfic, thus diving into over 40 years of backlogged canon and hoping I don’t screw up too badly. (Of course, the research process is unbelievably fun, so who am I to complain?)

- Writing casefiles, of which there are few in this fandom, for a show I was not as familiar with as I should have been (as in, I haven’t seen every single episode ever – this would be CSI: NY). From this, I learned that every single detail of a casefile needs to be planned out way in advance, and an interesting premise does not a solid case make. And how a few crucial pieces of lab equipment work.

- Writing ‘serious’ romance as opposed to fluff. I didn’t really think I could handle a mature relationship with actual conflicts without turning it melodramatic, petty, soap-opera-ish, or veering off into angstyland. But I think I’m managing okay.

- Writing sex of any persuasion. Given how squeamish I (still!) get at the prospect of research, it’s a miracle I managed even what little I did. It really is funny just how much thought you have to put into a scene like that for it to be any good.

Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?

I have many, actually:

- Finish Chapter 3 of Sixth Date before it gets to be a freaking year old. That’s probably first on the list, since it’s been forever since I updated that one. Of course, given that this is the entire new year, I’d hopefully have it completed by the time I make this list again.

- Complete my request fics which have been in limbo since July. Most of those are actually in various stages of completion, there’s just…one sentence, or one little section, or one rough spot, that won’t let me finish it the way it needs to be finished.

- Get at least half-done with Little Brothers. Learn to stop caring if Season 6/Season 7 Josses it.

- Finish the [profile] 1sentence claim I forgot about. Actually, just write some Burn Notice fic in general. And some Chuck fic, too.

-Complete, or at least come close to completing, all my unfinished short series, a list that includes Perfects, A Fraction of Infinity, and Interludes. Since there are only four ficlet-chapters in Interludes and canon-checking them is easy, that should probably go first, just to get it out of the way.

- An addendum to the above: Figure out what the hell I’m doing in Perfects.

- Cross off all the one-shots on my Fic List, and at least get started on the series. In particular, I would like to get my research all done for Honor Among Thieves and really make some headway on that.

-Start writing fic for Resident Evil and FFX again. Now that Umbrella Chronicles is on the Wii I have a fresh crop of canon to work with, and maybe this time I’ll actually characterize Wesker correctly.

- Write slash. Write good slash. Write in-character slash. Write slash that, gasp shock, goes beyond UST. Expand my horizons in regard to relationship-fic.

- See above. Replace “slash” with “femmeslash”.

- Write a Doctor Who Ninth Doctor songfic to Blue Oyster Cult’s “Veteran of the Psychic Wars”. Because I’m insane.

- Write more casefiles. In fact, write more genfic in general. Enough with the warm-fuzzy shipping nonsense. ;)
