Someone, please, STOP ME from joining another challenge/fanfic50/drabble community. I'm already in two, and I never even work on my claims. The minute I sign up for them, I do something else. I don't have time for this. There's already like fifty ficlets and plotbunnies chewing on my brain. No good can come of me signing up for any more claims. For the love of all that is good and decent stop me.
Since I'm going to miss new Miami tonight (the one time it might not be awful, I have to miss it. Figures), I figure I should at least post my old review of it, delayed substantially due to schoolwork. Bear in mind that the latter half of this was written while I should have been doing my paper and, as my attention span dies a horrible chainsaw death after about 4 am, it may not be entirely coherent.
House and CSI coming next.
CSI: Miami, “Just Murdered”
So I wasn’t totally right about the Eric/Calleigh kiss. But I was thematically right. It wasn’t even shippy, and there was no good reason to hype it. You and your damn previews, CBS.
I actually have two opinions of this episode. There are the parts of it that make me jump around and squeal because eeeeee continuity! And then there’s the rest of it, which for the most part makes me facepalm, roll my eyes, and dream longingly of Season 2.
Actually, speaking of Season 2, I made the decision not to do anything productive today (that’s what tomorrow’s for!), and so I decided to bum around and watch TV, wherein I caught a rerun of “Blood Brothers”. And yes, that’s the episode that made me dream longingly of Season 2 during this episode. I miss Yelina. I miss her and Horatio making angstyfaces at each other. I miss Horatio actually having a sense of humor and maybe, on occasion, doing stuff in the crime lab. I miss villains who weren’t cardboard cutouts. I miss Speed (even though I like Ryan). I miss Hagen. I miss Stetler, so help me.
And you know what I miss the most? I miss exchanges like “But I’m not going out with Stetler. He leers!” “Yes, I did notice that. By the way, he's doing it again right now.” I miss those so bad. What has happened to this show since then?
Oh, another thing I miss. I miss other people making episode comments like “And, Rick, if you hurt her or make her cry or touch her bum without her explicit consent then I swear by my snappy khaki suit I WILL END YOU.” I don’t remember where that’s from, but I kept thinking about it during that scene between Horatio and Stetler.
Also, how come we never see The Other Skeezy Cruz Brother again? Is he in Identity? What happens to him?
Meh. I guess I should get cracking on this episode review now. Although had it not been for the shiny nuggets of continuity I would have had a hard time maintaining interest.
I don’t think that day’s a’comin anytime soon.
I mean, really. Let’s just step back for a minute and contemplate all the crap this man has taken since the beginning of Season 3. Speed dies. Ends up having a weird rival relationship with New Boy Ryan. Loses his badge. Has an apparent relationship with and then breaks up with Natalia. Stalker ex-girlfriend follows him around. Sister has cancer. Sister marries boss which has got to be all kinds of uncomfortable. Sister gets shot and dies. Gets sued while trying to protect a woman in distress. Gets shot twice himself. Experiences memory loss. Relives sister’s death. STILL has icky con artist hounding him for money. And now, gets put on trial for incompetence. Does anything good ever happen to Eric? Like, ever? Can’t we pick on someone else?
Oh wait. Everyone else has all their own crap to deal with except for Calleigh, Alexx, and Frank, who have managed to get through this season remarkably angst-free. But that’s another rant for another day.
On that note, where exactly were Alexx and Frank today? I count two scenes with Alexx and one with Frank. This is getting out of hand.
Now, although I am a little wierded out by Eric’s new job as the universe’s whipping boy, I do have to present the writers with cake and noisemakers for their smashing display of attention to continuity, especially after I thought we’d given up. I was sort of wondering where Icky Con Artist Lady had run off to, so I’m…well, I’m not glad to see her, because she annoys me, but I’m glad that plotline hasn’t been dropped. Of course, this does mean that the fallout from his head injury is only going to get worse…for the first time, I’m honestly worried about how all this is going to be resolved – if indeed it even can. Icky Con Artist Lady shows no signs of going away, and his going back to work so soon after his injury is having consequences that can’t be ignored.
That said, I do think it’s a little too convenient that Horatio managed to get Sleazy Lawyer Lady disbarred. I somehow doubt that a lawyer can get disbarred for divulging that their client has a Swiss bank account – she’s a lawyer, not a priest. What’s even worse is that Eric goes right back to work after the charges against him are dropped. Um, did we not stop for a moment to consider that, if a judge rules that he should be on desk duty, he should maybe be on desk duty? If only so that this doesn’t happen again? Doesn’t seem like an unreasonable suggestion.
Best part of all this was easily Calleigh coming to the rescue. I’ve already mentioned how much I love the interaction between her and Eric, whether in a shippy context or not. This episode highlighted that closeness between them, and how well they work together. She’s become so protective of him in the wake of his shooting; arguably, that was there even pre-No Man’s Land, but it’s definitely more prominent now. Their dynamic has changed, but I like it.
Also, while I’m sort of grumpy at the previews for completely over-hyping the kiss scene, the actual scene was quite cute on its own merits. Adorable smiling all around, no melodrama in sight…I liked it. I think it fits in well with their relationship thus far. (I’d be more specific, but honestly by this point my memory of the episode is fading.)
Aw, Cal’s parents are divorced. :( I mean, I kind of figured, since we’ve never heard mention of her mom, but still. That said, where’s Kenwall been? I miss him too. He was proof that you could have a non-abusive alcoholic parent on TV.
The case this week…I don’t even really know what to say about it. I think I would have liked it better if everyone in the case hadn’t acted like unruly twelve-year-olds. The Divorcees? Spoiled, petulant brats, fighting over toys. See if you can spot the similarities in the scene when they’re arguing over the safe deposit box. The lawyers? Way too slimy and conniving to be believed. The pool boy? I ask you this: Who the hell is dumb enough to reach into a fire ant hill with his bare hands? I’m sorry, but I just couldn’t bring myself to care about these people. That’s another reason I miss the early seasons – didn’t Miami used to deal with serial killers and kidnappers and pedophiles and drug addicts? Can we have them back? I’m sick of the dopey, obnoxious rich folk. It was fun the first few times. It isn’t anymore.
No real other thoughts about this episode, other then ‘they’re still doing stupid crap with the camera. GAH.’

Now if you'll excuse me. I'm going to go take a nap for the rest of my life.
